By that mudra Shiva is saying to the devotees to fear not of these scary thought of destruction by my dance, for I am here to protect you and we believe the left hand mudra shows the way to the devotee - surrender your thoughts to me. You are right that it is the most elegant and beautiful imagery that you can find in any philosophy.
