Funny story, I used to have house plants but I would over water them and they would die on me. My solution was a planted aquarium. I now have a 20 g planted tank and I don’t have to worry about over watering. Now my plants grow crazy fast. Specially the Jungle Val 😊
Crypts are my absolute favorite. They grow for me in any substrate I put them in. Doesn’t matter if using co2 or not. There’s also a lot of variety of crypts to choose from. Cool 😎 video
12 years ago, I bought 2 anubias. Nothing but fish crap and water changes and medium light. The things have flowered at first, but then started to spread all over the tank. I now have 7 of them descended from those in the tank and somehow 2 in flower pots completely out of water (but with maintained daily humidity). They seem to be making even more babies soon.
Anubias and Crypts are great, love them both. Crypts edge out the Anubias due to more variety and colors. I can do an entire tank of Crypts and have so much visual diversity.
Anubias will always be my favorite. They are the only plant I will ever have in my tanks. Yes they grow slow, but I have always found companies that sell large mother plants. My tanks look like underwater jungles.
Two of my favorites at the moment. I purchased some very dark crypts that were growing in aquariums at a store that was going out of business. Didn't know what they were until I watched your video. It must be the Bronze. They are planted in 3 tanks with the brown/natural gravel you can find at Wally World. They are doing very well without root tabs. I think that is because the tanks have be established 6+ months though. Thanks for another fun and educational video.
I have a 260ltr tank in which the main plants are Java fern, cryptocorynes wendtii, anubias (can't remember which type) and floating water lettuce to provide lots of shade. I inject co2 and give a weekly dose of general fertiliser when I do a 25% water change. The Anubis which has been in the tank for over 3 years has grown to about 15 inches high, never been cut back and about a month ago developed a flower head which is nice. The thick blanket of water lettuce which I have to thin out each week keeps the Anubis from having algae growth on it. Last week I was a bit heavy handed thinning the lettuce and today I noticed for the first time the crypts fizzing with tiny bubbles which I thought was great. On closer inspection I noticed that the bubbles were coming from holes in the plants leaves which were getting noticeably larger as I watched, too much light. Never seen anything like it. Fortunately I've got a Juwel Led lighting system which I can control. Turned down the lighting and the bubbling stopped immediately. Lesson learned before too much damage done 👍👍
I love the Anubius plants and I agree I really like the nana petite. It looks so pretty nestled onto a small piece of drift wood. I have one in one tank and just ordered another for my second tank. I also added two crypts wendtii to one tank and they are doing very well so will also be adding some to my second tank:) I love 'puttsing' with these plants...it is so rewarding. I admit I have found planting into the substrate with the tank 2/3's full of water really a challenge, even with long tweezers! I'm getting a little better at it. But you are right: it can get the best of you--lol! I Love your tanks. I have two and am very seriously deciding where to put my third:) Thanks for your videos
I love Anubis nana petite. They are adorable! So easy to attach to drift wood. I love to watch the roots grow and wrap around. I haven’t tried crypts so I can’t say about them. Great video. Happy Holidays to you and your family!
What?! We don't have to water aquatic plants?! 🤣😂Great video Joanna! Both cryptocoryne and anubias are great plants. I myself prefer the cryptocoryne in the backgrounds to midgrounds, and smaller anubiases in the front. A great tip to avoid massive crypt melt is to boost the CO2 (if you're adding CO2), and that way the melt will reduce, and newer leaves will come up faster.
Thank you! This was so informative that I think I will have to watch again later. I love your fish selections in the community tank (placed near the sink). And that white betta is beautiful...like a little angel. :)
Thank you for the video! This is more up my alley! Oh man your ember tetra are gorgeous! I planted a small cript in a dragon stone and it took off. It never has even seen substrate!
Right?! The lure of aquaria is too strong! Lol. First time I saw ember tetra at Flip Aquatics, I knew I had to have! Crypt with no substrate - yes - I have a number of them I left floating and while kinda squished, they are doing just fine! ☺️
my 2 favorite plants crypts are a bit finiky need some good plant soil and need ferts but totally worth keeping them so far i only experienced mild melting back at moving them from 1 tank to another but what i can say for sure they love direct ligth they are fine in shade also but theyr growth is significantly weaker and the size of the plants also
I have both. Anubious- nanna and the petite. Crypts- Balinese, wenti brown and green, spiral. It's sorta like comparing apples and oranges. Luv your vids.
In my 29 gallon aquarium I have 3 anubias minimas which are glued to my driftwood. My only complaint has been how easily they grow black beard algae. Liquid carbon applications are helping this along with cutting down feedings and light. I also have several crypts undulata (wentdii?). Starte with just 6 small ones. The biggest hassel was not melting, but keeping them from coming out of the substrate. However, now 3 months later all are growing like crazy, full and leafy with lots of bronze colors, and generating plenty of new growth. Now, I just need to find better plants for the back of my aquarium. Have had no success with val. Now have some corkscrew val which are not growing very fast, just holding on.
I'm new to aquatic plants, and have planted quite a bit of Anubias into my 225 Tanganyikan Tank. Even with the water being a high PH and very hard they seam to be thriving and growing. I recently planted 1 Nana and 5 Nana Petite on a huge piece of lace rock in the tank over the holiday weekend. I used the wedge technique from one of your video's, hopefully I did it right. It's been 4 days and none of the leaves have turned yellow still green as can be.🤞🤞 So far I'm in love with Anubias !!! ❤
@@thesmallscape Give it another week or two then I'll be celebrating 😬 I will tell you this... you're the one that has me hooked on Nana Petite. I wish you could see how big this piece of Lace Rock is I planted them on ! If they cover it as they propagate, it's going to look like a cave covered of clovers 😉👌
I got my first Anubias from a pet store that was throwing it out because it was mostly dead. I trimmed it up and put it in tank and it went nuts after about a month. Now it's time to move it to the bigger tank.
Another excellent video Joanna! I love both Anubias and Cryptocoryne. Anubias for instant success, Cryptocoryne for colorful impact. I had to wonder for a moment when you said Crypts reminds you of Hosta. Then I remembered there's Hosta 'Curly Fries'
Hi Joanna. My anubias turn yellow often. The 90 gallon fish less tank has been up and running for about 4 months now….waiting for a nice (hopefully) home for discus. I was adding a small dose of EASY GREEN all in one plant fertilizer but stopped about 2-3 weeks ago. I wanted to see if the anubias would grow without the liquid fertilizer. That may be my problem. You inspired me to get brave & set up a tank with live plants. ( I will be receiving my discus in about 1-2 weeks). Long story short, could not adding the plant fertilizer be the problem why my anubias seem to turn yellow? Thankyou for your videos. - Marty Borst
I saw a really great tip about planting crypts. Just cut the leaves off about an inch above the crown and then plant. It promotes new growth and you don’t have to worry about it melting. I know I had one planted that I kind of neglected(should of added root tabs), and I tried this while it was planted. I trimmed off the majority of the bad stems and new bright green leaves starting spouting up in no time
I have both types which do great in my tanks. I love to garden in my yard so I had to use live plants for my plant passion. I love your channel and Jason's. Hope you have a great holiday and here's to a better 2021.
I have crypts and love them, but no anubias yet. I did separate my Sword today though. So, I am slowly adding more plants to my 30gal tank. As those grow I will add more to my other tanks. I really want the anubias nana plant, they are cute.
Great video. I love Anubias as well. Crypts have been hit or miss for me mainly because at times my Mbunas seem to like to snack on them. They do really well in my Odessa barb and guppy tank.
