I didn't talk much about the plans in this Netgear Nighthawk review. They change so much and it can be confusing. At the time of this writing, I suggest you go with the ATT Unlimited Starter, bring your own device. Then use the sim card they send you for the Nighthawk instead of an iPad. For a single device it is $55 monthly. It can be as low as $30 if you have multiple devices. It may be easier to call or get the plan in person at a store. The site tries to push you into a device which you may not want.

@Magnus Arthur how much is the subscription? It is not apparent without first putting in email.
@@GeekTractor My M1 sometime will not start up while running plugged in with no batter, what is the deal with that? Have to unplug it several times. It is a refurb
@@mckinzie4934 Does it shutdown on its own? Or does this only happen when you move it? There was one time that it took a bit to restart, but that has only happened once. I was wondering if it was doing a firmware update or something.
I have used over 3,000GB in the last week. Thank you so much! I downloaded every movie I ever wanted!
Whoa! Have some serious Thanksgiving binge watching coming up :)
Hey what service provider did u get? T-mobile? I live in a rural area with boost mobile for my phone it uses the sprint/tmobile network i get around 3-7 mbps download and around 70 ping on my iphone XR hotspot but the problem is that it lasts about 30minutes then my speeds are completely gone. My question is, was your situation the same? I need a good plan /hotspot for college zoom/ youtube streaming during class.
Did you have the Nighthawk m1?
Lol how's your service now? Shut off like the rest of us?
Hey guys, I contracted att plan, and even reaching the 15 gb limit data, they keep charging me 10 dollars every 2gb used, can you guys help me to figure out why please?
Hi i don’t know if you’ll see this but if you do please get back to me, does the net gear nighthawk not slow your speeds after you go above your limit?
I’m in the middle of the city on AT&T and not even getting close to that
You should look at get an outdoor antenna installed for it too.. and just have 2 short TS9 adapter cables ... like the Poynting Xpol-2 5g antenna.. and then ofc make a video of that too ✌
I considered setting up an antenna to better pull in the LTE signal, however I am in line for Starlink. I should be getting anytime now. So I am holding out for that right now.
I'm amazed that you have DSL (as sorry as it is). We live so far out that there is no such thing as DSL within 15 miles of us. Satellite or cell service are the only options.
Wow!
Try using a ethernet cable to a nice router, you get much better performance for all connected devices. It's awesome!!
Thanks for the tip!
AT&T is so expensive where I live, but I love it, because I think I’m the only user in my neighborhood, and that means no caps for my service
Nice!
Great video! I recently ordered the Nighthawk M1 through an unlimited/unthrottled service call Nomad Internet. We live in a rural area as well and use a lot of data and livestream for our Church. We were struggling to have reliable service and speeds. Wow! We love it! We are waiting on Starlink too but for now this will do :-)
Hi sir I had a quick question was that your only source of internet, we have att but it is currently going from bad to worse. Getting the night hawk through nomad is it able to stream movies?? Thank you
@@prayervalleyfamily through nomad internet you have the choice between 4 different major carriers. If one don't work for you, then they will send you a SIM card for a different carrier. To answer your question, YES you can watch RUclips or movies, etc unlimited without being throttled and up to 20 devices. I did have trouble with a SIM card going bad, but they had me another one out to me in 2 days and I was up and going again. The nighthawk somehow seems to have the ability to even function well off of a weak signal. It's the best in my opinion.
Oh great info and Thank you for your reply.
Hey how's that internet now Ron? Get screwed out of 350 bucks 2 months after paying it?
@@redcisco8579 nope. Still have it and still loving it. 🙂
Love the video sir! And your cred went way up with the Starlink plug!!! I am sooo over waiting for Starlink to come to South Carolina!
I used one of these and got almost identical speeds from a phone hotspot on 4G.
So Im in the process of turning the storage unit that I rent into mancave. I have everything I need in there. Couch, lazy boy, space heater, flat screen, xbox, microwave, mini fridge, etc. Only thing im missing is the internet because it doesnt have any coaxial or ethernet outlets. Will this be a good fit for my situation?
Absolutely. As long as you have power.
@@GeekTractor Yup. The power outlet is right next to the unit.
👌😁
By the sound of these comments bro you should do another update stating what plan you have how it work all this talk about nomad internet and bix wireless so on and so fourth and people having trouble yours works and still work you need to explain to them how you did it so everyone is on the same page.
I will be posting an update next week.
I forgot to update this comment thread. This is the update I promised. ruclips.net/video/HhqU0mkM-kg/видео.html
Thank you, just ordered mine.
Sweet! We used over 200GB of bandwidth this past billing cycle. We had like 8 people connected to it over the weekend. Didn’t seem to have an issue.
It’s working perfectly for us, thanks again.
You said the SIM card was too small does it still fit and work in the router
Even though the iPad’s SIM card is smaller than the Nighthawk’s slot, go ahead and slide it in. It still works. We just used another 165GB of bandwidth this past month. It even fell hard on the floor one time. I thought for sure the SIM card would have to be reset in there, but nope. It’s still in there solidly.
Did you have to call and get a plan
Nomad is saying that ATT will no longer support these routers. Just cancelled my service.
The key is using an iPad SIM card.
With which provider?
I am using ATT. I’m at 200GB bandwidth usage for the month. There are still a few more days until reset.
They’re coming out with that one that is 5G I can’t wait
How far are you from the tower/cell mast
I disagree with starlink. It'll end up being a monopoly of the orbital space
I totally respect the concern.
You ever tried gaming with it? My buddy lives out in a rural area and loves to PC game with me. He already uses 4G LTE but it's a crummy phone tether and he get's bad performance.
I haven’t tried it with anything serious. I will have to dust off Pub G and try it out.
@@GeekTractor That'd be awesome. If you ever get around to doing that, let me know how it works.
I had three kids over this weekend who played call of duty on it. I didn’t hear a word of complaint.
@@GeekTractor Awesome man, thanks for the reply!
What were the speeds you got on your ipad hotspot vs your night hawk hotspot? Was your internet speed enhanced?
I didn’t notice a speed difference. The most notable thing is being able to tether with multiple devices without the iPad plan’s hotspot limitations.
Can the Nighthawk M2 work without an inserted battery and as a fixed router? In other words, operate connected only to the power supply.
Thank you.
I never tried that, but I took out the battery last night and just kept it plugged in and it works. This is great because I have the device in window in order to get the best signal and during a certain time of the day the sun shines in and I get a battery overheated warning and I have to move it. Without the battery in there I may not get that now.
I have a question I use the Nighthawk Mr1100 At&t for my ps5 and xbox series x, but I keep getting the strick nat type 3. How do I change the nat type to 2?
Sorry. I don’t know much about this, but I did find this in the Netgear forums. community.netgear.com/t5/Mobile-Routers-Hotspots-Modems/Double-Nat-on-Nighthawk-M1-MR1100-need-to-forward-ports-for/td-p/1726177
Hello, so I have A&TT business account and have nighthawk. I get only 12mgps upload 12. They have me throttled at those speeds. I live also in the rural area. But I bought antennas I want to reach max speeds. I have old iphone that I have laying around. If I activate that iPhone with that unlimited at&t plan. Would I able to use the SIM card of the old iPhone on the nighthawk so I’m not throttle anymore and then close my business at&t account?? Thank you
I don't see what that wouldn't work. That is essentially what I did with my iPad plan. I just put the nano SIM card into the Nighthawk slot and it works perfectly.
May i have the link to the plans please? My current 35$ a month plan at&t is saying no data connection
This the plan I have.

Remember that I got it for an iPad, then took the SIM card for the iPad and put it in the nighthawk. Another commenter said they use a service called Nomad. I haven’t looked into that, but may be worth a look.
Does the hotspot have stronger signal strength than the phone? I’m really considering buying this but I don’t get very good service where I live
Every phone is different. I noticed friends with ATT seem to have less issue with iPhone than android out here. But the good thing about this device is it can be moved to a spot and left there, versus the constant movement of your mobile device. If you have any signal on your mobile device, then this alone can be helpful. The Nighthawk gets 2-3 bars and works great.
I have same device, unlocked . Based on IMEI, it is compatible with Mint. But thry have no data only plan.
If I wanted to activate the unlimited 3 month plan, do I also need a phone ?
This step is the most confusing, any guidance appreciated.
You would only need an activated nano or micro SIM card from the service provider. You can see more in my update video here that may help. ruclips.net/video/HhqU0mkM-kg/видео.html
Why can’t you just use your iphone as a hotspot to do the same thing?
Service providers treat Hotspot bandwidth differently than direct bandwidth. The "unlimited" plan I have has a max of 15GB of hotspot bandwidth. If I go over it starts charging me for overages. Running a mobile device's SIM card in the Nighthawk treats the bandwidth as direct bandwidth, so overages aren't charged. They just give me a warning that the speed may be governed during high traffic times. We regularly run over 300GB of monthly bandwidth. No noticeable speed limits and no charges.
If you don't use more than 15GB of bandwidth a month, then using your iPhone as a hotspot is a good option.
Will this help if I have no cell signal in the house? I get a signal if I walk to the end of the driveway, but nothing in the house.
Hi Victoria. Inside our house we get one to two bars. When I put the device near a window in the direction of the tower I get two to three bars. That has worked great. You would need to have some sort of signal. I will be uploading an update on this device answering a number of questions from the comments. Subscribe so you get notified when that video comes out. I will also be getting an antenna to help pull in better signal from the cell tower. I will do a separate Geek Out video on that. That may help in your scenario.

Can you stream videos higher than 480p?
I just streamed one at 720p. I did one at 1080p. But right now I am sharing the network with other family members running things, plus I am at the other end of the house so it buffered a bit on 1080p.
@@GeekTractor thanks for letting me know, I've been looking into some of these mobile hotspots but I've seem that some aren't able to stream over 480p. I've been reading alot of good things about this netgear nighthawk, Thanks.
Do you have to call and get a plan once it’s shipped
Yes. You will need to get a plan. You will want to make sure it is a plan for the iPad. “Bring your own device” plan. When they send you the SIM card just use that in the nighthawk. It is smaller than the slot, but it still slips in and works fine. I have been using it for months without issue.

How much you pay monthly and Is it contracted
I pay about $55 with AT&T Unlimited.
So I am confused do you still have to pay for a wifi service and this boosts it if not how does this work
The benefit of this scenario is connecting multiple devices to LTE cell service without typical hotspot limitations service providers put on devices like an iPad.
Yes you will still need to pay for a cell plan, but the Nighthawk makes it easier to share that with other devices in the home.
You can see more details in my follow up video. m.ruclips.net/video/HhqU0mkM-kg/видео.html
The new ones are going to be unlocked so that will be cool
Sweet!
Do you think the iPad 8th generation SIM card will work? Is it the same size as the other iPad SIMs?
Yes it will. It has a Nano SIM card, the same as the 7th generation, which is the one I have.
Here is a reference for you. support.apple.com/en-us/HT202645
I live in a really rural dead area in Massachusetts I have a yagi, the nighthawk M1 and AT&T wireless internet the fastest I get is 3 mps download at the most and under 1 mps upload any advice?
You will still need to be in range of an ATT tower for the Nighthawk to benefit from LTE speeds. Have you tested Verizon connectivity in your area? Netgear has a 4G LTE modem that works with Verizon as well. I have not tried that one, but I know it does not have a router built in like the Nighthawk, so you would need to connect to your router for wireless broadcast. Here is a link to that device amzn.to/2Ga5Y0v (affiliate).
@@GeekTractor I get a connection of 1-2 bars with the AT&T tower it’s about 10 miles away.
@@GeekTractor I also have a AT&T wireless internet which is this> at&t wireless internet but what would I do with this device you showed me and what would I hook up to it?
I get 2-3 bars with ATT here. Placement makes a big difference. I have found a couple sweet spots in the house that that lets me reach 3-5Mb upload speeds, which ends up having 30-40Mb download speeds. I walked all over my property while uploading a RUclips video and monitoring upload speeds. I found a spot that consistently has 8-10Mb upload speeds.
I simply suggested the Netgear 4G LTE device because it supports other networks like Verizon, just in case Verizon has better coverage. But like I said you would need to have a router to connect the modem in order to provide wifi for your location.
Starlink launched another 60 satellites a few days ago. I would sign up for their beta program to be an early tester. www.starlink.com. They contacted me recently for more details. I am looking forward to testing that out. I will VLOG about it if their beta program allows it.
this netgeat nighthawk is burning through my gb. Any way you know whats wrong?
If you have unlimited, it shouldn’t be a problem. I used more than 200GB last cycle. With my family of six that is pretty easy to do. We have a DSL line for Netflix and Amazon Prime. I will put another video together on the SIM card and plan I use. I use the iPad SIM card. Not a hotspot SIM card.
Nice
Thanks
Thx for this info! Username checks out 😁 Also, Spice is super cute 🐾
Does my iPad have to have a hotspot unlimited plan or a regular one
It depends on how much bandwidth you need. I have an unlimited iPad plan with hotspot option. But I kept running out the 15GB hotspot limits. Once I put the SIM card in the nighthawk I could connect with other devices to it without the hotspot limits.
I’m not sure if they sell an unlimited plan without a hotspot option. I may need to check into that.
Would this work with visible or MetroPCS ?
That is a good question. It really is up to the service provider. Technically the hardware should still work. Sorry for the late reply.
Is this still working?
Absolutely! I have used 361GB of bandwidth this month and have one more day left. I will be posting an updated video next week with answers to questions from comments. Subscribe so you get notified when that goes live, if you like.
I live in a rural area and I want to know if the nighthawk m1 can it connects to Verizon or is it only connected to AT&T because I’m with Verizon too and I want to stay with them because I have LTE where I live but AT&T works here too but I want to stay with Verizon.
It can only connect to ATT. I have found some posts on Reddit where people have reconfigured it for Verizon-based frequencies. However, it is probably not worth the trouble, unless you’re comfortable fiddling with tech. I would look into getting a Verizon branded hotspot.
@@GeekTractor I see I’m think of changing because I feel like I’m getting rip off on Verizon and like stuff but on at&t do they stay by their words or like they kinda sus
I have had the nighthawk for three months now. We just finished the last cycle with 165GB of bandwidth usage. We didn’t notice any throttling. I probably would have looked for a Verizon-based device if we didn’t live in a Verizon dead zone. But all in all... I am very happy with what we have gotten out of this little device and the ATT iPad plan. It has been a game changer for us out here in the middle of nowhere.
Thanks for sharing @Ben Lewis
What plan are you using for this service?
I am using ATT unlimited. The key is to get the plan and a SIM card for an iPad. The SIM card will fit inside the nighthawk. We took the Nighthawk to Florida for Thanksgiving vacation. My brother is a vlogger as well and we are swapping video, so I have uploaded gigabytes using the nighthawk the past couple days. Super fast and no noticeable lag. Very satisfied.
@@GeekTractor can you provide a link for that? When I reviewed their plans for other devices there were no plans avaliable for unlimited, that I found.
@@aubzrk here is the current unlimited plans. Keep in mind if you use the SIM card in the night hawk it acts under the 100gb threshold before they *may* slow speeds. No matter how many devices are connected to the nighthawk. We used around 185gb last month without issue. www.att.com/plans/unlimited-data-plans/?source=EC1NvImlp0000000P&tfn=wireless&WT.srch=1&wtExtndSource=att+unlimited&gclsrc=aw.ds&ds_rl=1272071&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgKuE0-fp7QIVgr3ACh1I-w0_EAAYASAAEgJEb_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Hey Buddy, can you help me please. I got the nighthawk m1, and I contracted att plan, but even reaching the 15gb limit data they keep charging me 10 dollars per 2gb, can you help to figure out why

You need to have unlimited to avoid data overages.
@@GeekTractor I tried to do an ipad plan in the Verizon website, and the answer was.. the IMEI is not compatible with their plan(nighthawk m1 IMEI). I'm going to check NOMAD internet, do you know if it's good?
@@luanlmt you can check them out. I have been hearing people have issues. All I know is I got an iPad plan (bring your own device). I used the SIM card for the iPad in the nighthawk. Maybe the one difference. I actually have an iPad and an IMEI number for it. That is what I did and it works really well.
@@GeekTractor I understand, thank you buddy
Hey don't know if you're still here but you can just buy a standard phone plan and put that phone plans sim card into the nighthawk (usually locked to at&t). This will get around the "imei not supported" issue since they no longer allow services through them officially. Just purchase the phone plan and stick that sim card they send into the router. Thats what I do and it works perfectly. Be sure to purchase unlimited data. (You don't need unlimited hotspot. Just unlimited data.)
Will a cellphone SIM card work instead of a ipad
I don’t see why not. I am using a nano SIM from the iPad because I need the SIMs in my phone. Plus in my case I am using ATT for the nighthawk because my phones are all on Verizon, which works great every but this valley we live in.
I will do a video update with more answers on this.
Do you use data offloading at all?
What do you mean by data offloading in this context?
@@GeekTractor The best I can tell data offloading is where you plug that nighthawk into your home DSL modem. Then it offloads some of the Internet traffic on to that net work. Which saves you data so that you don’t experience throttling. However Nobody seems to have a whole lot of information about it. That’s why I asked. I’m curious if while offloading data onto the DSL it maintains speed.
