the rarity of frontal self portraits could also be the lack of being able to see oneself and paint at the same time.

That video is almost as old as RUclips. Likely circa 2007.
First one looks like a copy.
During those days, there's no computers, smartphones, TVs, Movie Theaters, Malls, etc...and artist have more time to create, invent one their paintings.
Self portrait is more than today's selfies. Just because they didn't have an IPhone , doesn't mean that self portraits are vanity 's attempt to Immortalize themselves for posterity.
