  • When a pilot lands their aircraft, the idea is point the noise on a correct track but if the winds are bashing you from the side (Crosswind) the pilot needs to face the nose of the aircraft towards the direction of the crosswind and then a side slip or a crab manoeuvre are what a pilot can do to land their aircraft in crosswinds. It is one of the most impressive landings to watch and although the pilot usually has no issues, for a viewer, it looks most spectacular.
These heavies; Voyager & A400M Atlas have some great approaches with crosswind landings. The crosswind was gusting strong at intervals throughout the day and we've thrown in a C-17 that had no issues (oh and a Piper for Brize Bingo).

It’s amazing how strong the winds are when you think how heavy these are great pilot skills in show…..matched by the skills of Nikos capturing this 🫡

What a compilation! Incredible videography & footage. One would like to think those big heavies would never get blown around in those blustery crosswinds but they do. Scooshed & whooshed indeed. Fantastic, atmospheric video Ted. Ooh yeah. Thank you.

Oii Oii Margo thank you. Amazing how much power the crosswind has over a heavy aircraft. Always fascinating to watch the pilots take control so skilfully

This is a really good selsction of exterme crosswind approaches into Brize depicting how the pilots cope with such conditions. It is always part of their training aiming their aircraft in line with the runway centreline well videoed thank you very much Nikos.

Brilliant job by the pilots. I know they train for this kind of thing, but even so, must still be a bit scary. Big Big up to them. You never think the heavy's would struggle like that.
    Great filming Nikos

Absolutely brilliant A400M approach captured by the cinematographer here !!! Cheers!
I heard a unique sounding bird late night a year ago, which turned out to be a climbing TUAF A400M likely at full power @ around 27,000' (after checking flightradar) fly over my town, on it's way back over the pond heading back home. It was quite spectacular, especially given the unusually silent low winds acoustics that night, as I recall, perhaps muffled or amplified, or something, by the light fog hovering overhead.
There should arguably be at least twice the number of these A400M birds operating around today, imho... they would seem to be quite a credible package ✌🌐🔛

Brize must be especially tricky landing 07 with the initial part of the runway running uphill 😮

This sort of landing is quite normal for pilots, I've heard. Though to us on the ground they do look terrific. How nature can mess with such large aircraft as these just epitomises natures true power. The sight of the Atlas A400 coming straight at you is spectacular. Quite simply awesome camera work. Contra rotating Props fully in your face.
