I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Both Billy's and Dan's takes are perfect. This song perfectly captures the essence of Lord of the Rings, from the sweeping cinematography and the lovely land of New Zealand, to Howard Shore's glorious score. What a perfect Farewell this song is.

Who might he have been thinking about when he sang this emotional song and had tears streaming down his face at the end? Maybe his father, his family, dear friends and acquaintances he had lost. We do not know it.....
And yet, when Dan sings it, you might think of your own losses.

Thanks for reacting to this beautiful song. I think this version is better than the original but that is true of many of Dan's covers. Dan becomes the character and he is feeling this song deeply. He has said when you are singing a song that makes you feel an emotion that you should use it. This is obviously what he did here.

Thank you for playing this! Billy's original song is lovely, and Dan's singing it in Billy's key, as he usually does. This video is one of my favorites, showing a side of him that a lot of people don't know. It's a beautiful, delicate, and deeply emotional performance. Billy's original song is itself emotional and does tell a story, one of parting with friends, both within the Tolkien story, and also within the real farewells among the movies' cast and crew. But the song has added meaning for Dan, it seems - this was recorded about three months after his father's death. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts.

❤ yes Dan is very special. And this song hit home for him. The tears in his eyes really get to me. His father had died not to long before Dan recorded this. He is just so awesome. Thank you for your awesome reactions to Dan and his beautiful voice
He does have an amazingly beautiful voice. 🙂
I love the beautiful clear voice that Dan uses for this son. So Pretty an light. His emotions were so close to the surface. Toward the end one tear runs dow his cheek. If you look at his lower throat you can see him struggling a bit to finis the song. Don is such a wonderful performer. I suspect he really feels a lot of his songs.

Excellent reaction! Dan has said, on one of the many livestreams that he's on, that he was thinking about his dad when he did this song, just three months after he passed away. That's why there are tears in his eyes and why it's so heartfelt.
