I didn't realize that Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, and starred in this film. It's quite amazing, especially considering that it was made in 1921. I remember watching Chalie Chaplin and Buster Keaton and the Keystone Cops when I was younger and thought they were silly. I appreciate the effort it took to put something like this together given the film was 35mm. Later came 16mm in 1923 and then 8mm about a decade later (according to a Google search.)
I can’t help but notice how great young Jackie Coogan’s acting skills were. At such a young age, his acting was so natural especially during those emotional scenes. A 5 year old with an acting skill like that? What a rare gem that’s for sure.
The gifted and adorable young actor playing the title character here was Jackie Coogan. His parents were well-known Vaudeville performers, and the boy himself had been performing since the age of 18 months. This film made little Jackie the first child movie star, a global sensation. Years later, when Jackie was old enough to collect the millions that were supposed to be held in trust for him, it was gone... his parents (mom and stepfather, bio dad had since passed) had spent nearly all of it. He sued them, which eventually led to Coogan's Law in California. Basically, it safeguards the earnings of underage actors, to make sure their futures are protected. Coogan's Law is still in force, to this day. The other role which Coogan is even more famous for in later years, believe it or not, is Uncle Fester in the original "Addams Family" TV series from the 60s. He was the blueprint from which all portrayals of that character since then have been based.
Thank you very much. It adds value to the movie. I am 72 years old and I cried when I was watching it. Great movie and by today's standard. Thank you once again
I’m watching this 101 years later. In comparison that’s not a long time… but think about it. These actors, Chaplin too, they all lived to see World War II. Not long after that event black people protested for their rights and Martin Luther king jr gave his speech. The Cold War happened too. As well as 9 11. Even In modern day our country struggled with financial problems and racial problems… what chaplins kindness has showed me is that we haven’t changed since then… and even this cell phone I’m currently typing on. This was in between that hundred year time span. It’s honestly so crazy to think about. On a less somber note, we’ve also had plenty of great films in between that time.
i tear up at 13:05 when the lady asked chaplin, is the baby his and he surely nodded his head like he really committed to take care and raise the baby the moment he read the letter awww😢
always depicting life as it was, and bringing social issues into the forefront in his films long before it became fashionable to do so. charlie was a visionary, a comic genius and a brilliant story teller.
When I first saw this on, The Movie classics channel years ago, I laughed, I teared up, and just loved Charlie C's and young, Jackie Coogans performance. I've seen his other movies too. He was so clever and had super agility. A comic genius. He also wrote the song, "Smile" a lovely heartwarming old song, that I thought, "Nat King Cole" sang it the best. Love his voice.

Most of Chaplin’s films make you laugh. This one had me laughing and crying. He made a masterpiece that still has that classic old comedy to it, but also has lots of emotion enough to make anyone cry and laugh.
@@shahroze2628 just as back then, but nowadays there is at least some sort of social security. I know not in every country, so let's talk about the country where this movie was made or similar good countries.
People watching this version should know that the musical score here is not the one written by Chaplin. You should definitely check out the one with Chaplins music. It makes a universe of difference...
It's a really great film and really shows how he'd matured as a filmmaker since his early short comedies. City Lights is also brilliant but this one is the one I'll remember most warmly.
Although this is a comedian film but it carries a great humanitarian concept. Allah merci the souls of Charlie and the child Coogan and whoever else acted with them. 😘😘
The movie was primarily designed to show how tragic consequence "Capitalism" have on hard working general population and every one should oppose capitalism. Thats true.
