    About 1975 I bought a used 72-73 360 Mx to enduro ride in NJ pine barons. Very quickly realized it was too violently quick for those tight trails. I began a detuning by lowering compression, smaller carb, made an 11 lb flywheel, these changes made it a tractor. Then Cheriani forks and Billstein shocks went on to make it handle. About that time we were learning to relocate the shock mounts forward on the swing arm. I couldn’t afford a Husky but after these changes now I could run with them. At 82 yo I still long for riding the fire cuts in the pines on my old MX

      Thanks for sharing. I'd love to see how it would work with a flywheel weight. And any front end work would do wonders for that bike. Funny you mention Husky. I just bought and building a 79 390 and a 76 250 that I'm racing next year. They handle like a dream. Stay tuned.

    Love the commentary while the race is recorded. Those vintage bikes were so flickable in the tight stuff. Would love to do it all over again! Thanks for sharing.

    I had the same bike back in the early 80s & they make good power when tuned correctly but you have to watch that second to third gear or you will bust a tooth off of third if not careful I found out the hard way & having to split the cases to fix it . What I would do is polish the sides of the gears to take the stress risers off of the metal so less chance of gears being fatigue cracked plus I would champher the very edges of the gears with a Dremel where the tooth comes or slides into the next gear which helps with much smoother shifting plus it aids in not having that sharp edge of the tooth that can cause metal shavings from missed shifts . I also would polish the shift drum as well as they were often not the smoothest & I got a tip from the guy I bought the bike from who was the head mechanic at Larson's cycle in Cambridge MN who used to flat track my bike at times before I bought it from him & that was to use ATF in the transmission instead of oil because it helps the clutches grab better plus smoothens out the shifts at the same time which worked for me . I remember one day after school I was on mine & a neighbor kid up the road had just got dropped off a good half mile from his parents house coming home from detention & I stopped & asked if he wanted a ride home & he said sure so I said hop on & put your cap under your shirt & hang on & I took off wide open with him hanging on with the front wheel in the air 1st 2nd 3rd into 4th gear then hitting 5th doing about 90 mph on the dirt road then slowing down to drop him off & his hair was straight back & his eyes red blood shot from the wind & him saying damn that bikes fast lol . I many years later had seen him in a bar that his girlfriend was working at as a bartender & this was 20 years later & he brought that time up after all those years of me giving him a ride home that day which surprised me so that ride he got home that day really left an impression on him I guess . Wish I still had the bike but I sold it to buy my first car after getting my driver's license a 1966 Chevelle SS 396 & wish I had them both still . My brother has a 82 Honda XR 500R & I admit it rides nice but that 360 I had would definitely blow it's ass out of the water as far as how quick & fast it was plus I don't like how the ergonomics are on the Honda as far as how it makes me sit on it seeming slouched over the front of the bike more plus a few other things on it like the cable operated rear brake that doesn't always return as quick as it should with partial rear wheel lock up which isn't good on wet grass you probably know which Hondas were known to have pretty good brakes but even with a new cable shoes & springs in both front & back the bike stops like a tank compared to my old Hammer .

      Wow, thanks for all that info !!
      My dad has the case split right now. He said the shifter drum has a dog broke off and he is getting it fixed. He's 80 this year and loves these projects still. I'm passing all this info to him this morning. It was a great read with your experience I can tell it was all good. Big smiles here.

    I had a brand new Yamaha mx 360 back in 72. It had tons of power but the suspension was the worst. Rode my friends big bore Husky that was a bike!

    i miss my 74 mx360 had same color and look as pristine as the one here. had alot of fun with it and that top end will scare you if your not expecting it. And yes I know exactly what you mean about the baffling blowing out, my baffle fell off in a trail and had to drive 8 miles back home with that loud bike, everyone in a 2 mile radius could hear me comming.

    The baffles just fell out of my dt360 Enduro 74... How is it done to get em back in? I enjoyed your entire video. Had me laughing about that fourth gear... 😂

    Also I'm considering to remove and bypass the oil system and premix but I'm seeing argument that when ya get on the rpm the ⛽ pumps more quantity oil than at idle, any recommendations?

    • @DaveLightsracingstories
      @DaveLightsracingstories  Год назад +1

      I personally use only mixed oil / gas in the bikes. But I have the pumps on a 4 wheeler I have. Haven't had any problems with it. I'd say if you are suspicious that it may not give the right amount oil id mix my own and run that.

    Did you buy a 74 mx360 in south East Texas,, I sold one to a man who said it was for his son to race.

    • @DaveLightsracingstories

      Actually it's still my dad's. Yes he bought it back quite a few years ago in Texas. I raced it in Florida, Georgia, won the open title up here in Pennsylvania. Great bike. It's a hole shot monster. He got 2 motors and exhaust with it I think. Did you sell it to him ? It just went thru a major overhaul this winter. Looks like new.
