- Time for a RANT! The new IWC Ingenieur was released and the internet is in full rejection mode with tons of negative comments about the release. The grand majority of these comments are not about the actual watch - generally, I think people like it - BUT, instead about the PRICE. I’m in the minority thinking the price is fair… the rest of the world is voting TOO HIGH. This got me thinking… why is this watch TOO EXPENSIVE? What about other watches? Watch carefully… this episode may make you rethink your watch collection.

Most people accept or rationalize that Rolex prices are fair based entirely on secondary market prices. If this new IWC sells for 2x retail on the grey market, people will change their tune on the MRP.

Finally some honesty about luxury watches. I was reliably informed that the cost of a seamaster is approx $400 to make. The equivalent Christopher Ward c60 costs around $280 to make. You are paying a massive extra cost to omega to find their sponsorships and marketing - paying for bond and all those sports endorsements etc that make people recognise the brand on your wrist - what you are NOT paying for is a significantly better watch - the movement is better to the tune of $50-60 (big whoop). If you love the Seamaster and Omega then buy it - but know that your paying for the look and brand and not some massively superior product.

How nice to hear the truth about watches & I’m sure nothing will change as long as us as fans of these brands continue to put them on a pedestal that they really don’t deserve. But having this knowledge won’t change anything for me as it’s just how life is from cars to houses & jewellery it’s all about fooling ourselves that we have achieved something by owning these trinkets. They profit from our own snobbery so we only have ourselves to blame. Throughly enjoyed this stream well done PWT and thank you. 😎👏👍

As someone who spent most of my career in economics the correct view is most of these hype watches are technically UNDER priced! Why? Because they sell out and there are years-long waitlists to buy them. They would be considered overpriced if they couldn't sell at the AD. This is simple economic theory. The equilibrium price (the market price) is found in the secondary market (ie grey dealers).
So true 😁 - technically you’re absolutely right. Whatever someone is willing to pay for a product that’s what the product is worth. But, my real point… watch hobbyists should not justify that a $500 piece of metal from one brand is worth $20,000 but a similar $500 piece of metal isn’t allowed to be charged more than $6,000 from another brand without people throwing a fit. All true Patrick, I have to agree. A Sub indeed probably does cost $350 to actually manufacture. All those boutiques, AD gin-palace displays, ambassadors, sponsorship, stands at W&W, etc., need to be paid for, even before you get to AD mark-up and Rolex’s own colossal profit margins.
But then it’s also true that IWC hasn’t got the brand awareness, image or reputation of Rolex, PP, or the Royal Oak and it looks like it’s just slapped a $7k ‘Gentax’ on the Ingenieur SRP. Another Richemont-owned brand, JLC, recently pumped SRPs widely by +40% so there may be a theme to this.
All this reminds me of the (in)famous boutique scene from ‘Pretty Woman’ (1990) where when Richard Gere says he’s going to spend an “obscene” amount of money the manager asks if he means “profane” or “really offensive”.

Great video! Agree with you 100%.. nobody was saying they the GP Laureato was overpriced because they were comparing it to the RO and Nautilus.. not sure why they are hating on IWC for this reason. That said, wish it had an exhibition case back and a different pattern on the dial

Yes, the big brands are too expensive. When I was younger I wanted to own stuff like that. Nowadays, I'm happy with good quality watches, don't need the luxury.

It must be said that the AP clearly has $25,000 worth of touch labor. After all a whole team of robed elves polishing for 250 elfman-hours at $100 an hour is how they priced it.

Great video. IWC has also now added the option of an adjustable bracelet for the Ingenieur.
I’ll have to check that out. Very odd they didn’t add that to the start if they’re going to add it a couple weeks later.

I think there is something else going on with the IWC price complaints - a little bit of "who do they think they are....."ism
The pricing of this watch means that IWC is saying (I'll use Oz dollars) our Ingenieur (at 17000k AUD steel and 20ish Ti) is:
better than a sub - here 12k AUD, better than the new yachtmaster - here 19k (in Ti)
and in the same ballpark as a Blancpain FF (20K in the Bathyscafe and 23k in the original)
For a lot of watch geeks that see IWC as (perhaps) a fraction "above" Omega and definitely "below" Rolex - seeing IWC say effectively say "we see ourselves jumping rolex and going head to head with Blackpain is pretty confronting and doesnt match their view of the world.
Absolutely. Rolex as a brand has more prestige (currently) than IWC. The question for me is… can a new flagship model allow a brand to skip over previously more prestigious brands? Similar to how Tudor is gaining ground on Omega due to the Black Bay range.

Very true to many of the points, but please don’t skip these points: 1. Some people are buying the brand and resale market. I know people will hate to hear this. When I buy Rolex, I don’t just buy the watch, I buy the potential investment value as well. 2. The IWC movement is great. The definition of in house is vague anyways. But the same IWC movement for a pilot watch is almost half the price. The question is, is it worth it to pay for the extra 100% for the genta design?
Very true. Resale value is incredibly important to the watch industry these days… Probably the major reason there’s a surge in watch buying. I was trying to keep the video more factual (not all facts) without too many subjective opinions. To me art (like watches) is overpriced too. I can’t believe someone would pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a canvas with a couple paint splashes. 🤣 But if the resale value for art pieces is higher than what people can buy it for… like watches, these markets will flourish.
@@PocketWatchTime overpriced or not, it depends on the buyer. Rolex has done well on their marketing for many years to get people to buy in their philosophies. The reason people didn’t receive well with IWC ingenieuer is because mainly IWC is not very smart in their marketing. If they change the movement slightly to differentiate itself, I think they would have been in much better position. At the end of the day, it is not just the watch people are buying, it is the ideology behind the brand as well.
💯% - I think they should have kept a more original Genta look but tweak the things you can’t see - the escapement is silicone, so no need for a faraday cage… then you can have an exhibition caseback and use a more deluxe movement. Plus no cage = thinner watch. Update the clasp… Genta doesn’t care if you add micro adjust. 😁
And then to your point - market this watch as the updated BEST Genta design (true or not) and a $15k price point or higher would be an easy sell.

Good points I reckon. As an IWC fan and owner from wayy back, I also was shocked by the price of the new Ingy's, but quickly understood. IWC is part of the holy trinity (of Genta designs) and they need to capitalise on that.

funny ; i explained the exact same thing to a freind not 2 days ago cause he thought that it was too expensif; had to retell him the history of the ap ro so he'd understand how they are actually more similar in looks ; and marketing than they seem. good on iwc for trying to do that without pulling a 20K+ stunt.... those are 100% under appreciated and will explode in price later down the road.
and for me ; its the perfect evolution to the original ; while taking all the best parts of both the ap and patek; the curves and smooth case of the nautilus ; with the machining style of the AP. its the perfect blend in my eyes. i really love this model. far more than its predecessor.
and dont forget the servicing cost is far lower than both the other brands....

there is a Michel Herbelin Cap Camarat ( see through case back , sw200 mouvement ) wich is older than this 2023 version and looks amazingly similar. this does have the edge for me though as the case has more curves & the bracelet is more to my taste .
@gregmtech I’m not too familiar with all the previous models. I’m a quartz fan… so the thin quartz version was my previous favorite.
Man, this was a great video. I really love the Aqua and Black dials but leaning towards the Aqua. Like u said this watch is really taking a lot of heat for mostly its price, lack of a “real” in house movement , no adjustable bracelet and no exhibition case back. As much as I love this watch it’s hard to keep constantly reading and watching videos really trashing this watch. It makes you start to rethink what you know you like (and I really like this watch). I was gonna pick one up anyway but I’m really glad I found this awesome video with your great perspective. It will definitely take the sting out a little from dropping that kind of do, re, mi on a watch that costs $500 to make lol
The last thing I’ll say is I think the reason why no one gives AP, PP, and Rolex any grief in relation the the Ingenieur (in this instance) is because of the resale value of those brands. If you can pick up one of those models at MSRP you’d never worry about taking a hit if you decided to sell down the road, if anything you’d make a few bucks. You can’t say the same thing for IWC which takes a massive hit once u drive it off the lot per se. If IWC is going to try to play in that league with the big boys with the Ingenieur their going to have to try and make it exclusive by selling it strictly through boutiques (which is what they’re doing now), limiting supply, and hoping people will want to buy a piece that’s of legit Genta heritage at a much lower price than the other 2/3rds of the trilogy(AP,PP)

PW fantastic video!! The only question I would ask after this video is. Should these same watches cost the same if they are purchased used? Would it be the same psychology in purchasing a high end watch used? Or should it be a little less or does it still get the same price as a new one even though it would sold used?
That’s a great question! In truth… I would think a used or pre-owned item should always be less than the original. However, that doesn’t take into account scarcity or actual rare/unique items. These watches aren’t rare… But they are scarce. So, it does make sense that these watches get a premium. Now a premium 2 to 3 times the MSRP… I’m not paying that. But, obviously some people do.
This was a really great take, and looks like an interesting channel. One thing, it's semantics, but I don't think overpriced is the correct term to use. I think it's more about the consumer understanding that there are aspects to every product and finished article that are distinct from the raw production value of that item. Even if a basic G-shock has a factory materials and processing cost of 10 USD, and sells at the store for shop for 50 or 100 USD, I don't think that is overpriced. There is a real cost to the intangible aspects of a product, and they are important to the end experience. The packaging, the design, the QC, the ergonomics, distribution, advertising so that you know it exists and desire it, warranty support, etc. The ultimate mark up from, say, 500 USD to 15,000 USD might take some more mental gymnastics, but without an objective, engineering and science based metric for direct comparison of watches, we need to allow for the fudge factor of how it makes us feel. Certainly the market accommodates this fudge factor, looking at used prices of the mentioned brands such as AP and PP.

Obviously, these high prices don’t scare me away from buying… I buy too much. 😁 An aspect I was hoping to touch on in my video was the distain some people have for one brands “over priced“ watch, compared to another brands watch with the same price. For example, the new titanium Rolex is priced the same as the new titanium IWC… IWC gets tons of hate, Rolex gets glory; however, production costs the same for both watches.

Great video, imo IWC is a high end brand, the watches are worth the price considering what Rolex and others charge. Agree all luxury watches are overpriced but to us they feel like they are worth it because of the feeling and enjoyment we get from wearing them, especially iwc, my favourite watch brand.

Social media loves to push outrage culture. So many of the online critics have never seen an Ingenieur in person but feel like they are experts because they’ve watched a video or two and regurgitate what they’re fed. They also live in an alternate reality where they get to price luxury goods and believe they’re entitled to set the price.

Yes! The IWC Ingenieur is overpriced, like most watches (correct statement). I think IWC can ask what they want; like any brand can. If they want to sell it for 20K they can try… It’s more a personal buyer thing; if the buyer thinks it’s worth it and has the money…in the end IWC can ask whatever they want. A higher price will result in less watches sold, but maybe the idea is to upscale their entire brand instead of selling a lot of Ingenieur watches? For me personally; I think the Ingenieur is overpriced, like a Sub and Daytone are overpriced, but after seeing the watch in real life I still want a Ingenieur and I never wanted a Sub (or any Rolex). So if I have the money: then yes I will buy a Ingenieur, because for me it’s a awesome watch with massive (personal) appeal. I can live with it being overpriced and not being a good financial investment. I think good financial investments are made somewhere else; outside the watch world.
Well said. Watches are personal/emotional choice… And shouldn’t only be an investment choice. I get it if people don’t want to buy a watch that loses 50% of its value after buying new… But that’s what the gray markets is for. If the watch tanks on the secondary market… Just buy it on the secondary market. I’m curious what will happen with the IWC prices. You can buy vintage Ingenieur for incredible bargains. I’m going to give this new version a bit of time and see what happens with the pricing. If I can save $5000 buying it secondhand… I’ll take advantage of that.

Everything mentioned in this video is correct but is not serving the basic question of why same product by same company (MKXX and ingenur) are sold for completely different prices. Comparing with rolex, patek and AP is completely misleading and wrong
The Gerald Genta factor. The analogy with AP was that when the Royal Oak was first released… The Royal Oak was priced much higher than all the other APs. Raising the price of the AP helped the entire brand and most likely saved their entire company from bankruptcy. IWC just wants their shot.

This was so controversial that RUclips decided not to put this on my front page 😅. I thought it was common knowledge that MSRP, for almost anything, is a highly inflated number. When you see videos of experts not being able to tell between a fake and real Rolex you know that is the case... Well, I suppose one doesn't have to spend on advertisement, and salaries between a swiss watchmaker and their fake-making counterpart are different too. Still, we can try to muddle facts but the truth is the truth - watches are way overpriced.
I hadn’t thought about that argument… If you can make a virtually identical/clone Rolex and sell it for a couple hundred bucks… imagine how inexpensive these pieces could be if we cut out the corporate model.

Ur missing the point of luxury watches or any luxury item. It’s not the specs or the manufacturing cost of the product that matters in any luxury products. The functions also don’t matter for luxury items, it’s the brand image, brand identity and brand power that make up 90% of the cost of any luxury item. The reason people disapprove of IWC Ingenieur’s price is because people don’t think IWC as a brand is worth as much as Rolex. It has nothing to do with the quality of the watch. If u want a good watch worth the price, get a Casio G shock square. It’s 150 dollars that’s more accurate than any luxury watch, more shock proof, 200 meters water resistant, has timer function, alarm function, world time function, perpetual calendar, solar charging and a light. That’s more complications than the most expensive Patek.
Oh I get it. That was the point - all luxury is overpriced and this it’s hypocritical to argue one “luxury” is better than another. Same is true for all items in these categories whether it’s jewelry, purses, pens, or even a suit jacket. It’s all opinion and hype.
@@PocketWatchTime I don't think its hypocritical to say Rolex is better than IWC, or the other way round. The value of any luxury brand is determined by its perception of value. If the market deems that the Rolex is better and worth more than IWC, then it is the truth. It's like RM watches are worth $1M because the market deems it worthy, not because RM has some inherent value that makes it worth 10,000 times more than a G Shock. After all, all goods and commodities are determined by the market, basic economics.
Yes, all watches are overpriced, heck, all products are. The estimate of the production cost seems to be right based on what you hear from Swatch. A basic plastic Swatch costs around 10 CHF to produce and it is sold for 60 CHF, give or take a bit. So 1:5 to 1:6 production cost -> total price. If a simple Oyster Perpetual is produced for 500 CHF and sold for 5000 CHF, it seems to be accurate. Take care ;)
P.S. IWC is from the German part of Switzerland. So Ingenieur should be pronounced German, not French 😅.

@@PocketWatchTime See, the thing is that most watch brands in Switzerland are from the French (or partially French) parts of Switzerland (Biel/Bienne even has 2 names). Thus, we implicitly try to pronounce it the French way. In fact, if you look at the clip from IWC, they also pronounce it sometimes in the French and sometimes the German way. I guess, this happens when you live in a bilingual (actually there are 4 languages but two dominate) country 🤣.

That’s awesome. I’m glad to hear IWC is taking deposits and you’re guaranteed a watch. Aqua is my favorite too… but tempted by titanium.
Of course high end watches are overpriced as are all luxury designer goods .. The great marketing circus that takes advantage of human.insecurity . I think most are pissed because they don’t think iwc are premium enough to warrant taking the total piss out of people with pricing in the manner that Rolex , patek , AP , Hermes . LV etc . There seems to be an acceptance that you partially pay for the product but also hugely for the flex and this is somehow fine .. I do scratch my head and think it makes no sense that the iingenier is twice the price of say an aqua terra . Then again none of it makes sense , capitalism follows the principle of charge what you think you can get away with .. overpriced only truly has any relevance if an object dosent sell ..

There is so much drug and illegal money floating around in the world at this moment and the crims want to spend their gains. You can see the price of already overpriced items, cars, houses, wines etc. Watches have come into view and have been marketed by everybody on the selling train and machine made brands like Rolex have manipulated the market to the extent that watches change hands at up to 400-500% of catalogue price. They are nice watches, but that is me damning them with faint praise. I.W.C. make good watches, however with third party movements. My advice for a non mafia buyer is look around, there are much better watches made by genuine sellers out there. Caveat Emptor.
So true - for the prices of the more expensive watches you can get a wonderful timepiece with real innovation and interest. I love my Zodiac meteorite and Sinn U50 as much as some of my far more expensive watches.
The Royal Oak and the Ingeniur and both overpriced.

A 50% markup on $5k watch makes a $7500 watch not $10k. To make a $5k watch $10k it would be a 100% markup. But I agree with your premise as well. Another thing is if one thinks something is too expensive then just don't buy it, simple. Just like an iPhone, you buy the name and image. It is also called FOMO (fear of missing out) so much of what people seek today is image. They want to be the "Joneses" and have the "IN" things too. I can buy a phone for 1/4 of price that will do pretty much the same thing and I will probably have a bigger battery and be able to expand my memory capacity. Not an engineer but I think it is harder to shape and overall, a bit more difficult to work with titanium but I don't know about the almost 25% difference.
The iPhone is not a great example to use here. A lot of people buy iPhones because they like the Apple ecosystem. Its ease of use and easy compatibility with other peripherals, key to why it caught on. Samsung and other phones struggle to be considered 'easy to use' for the vast amount of the general public. The hardware and software combine to make it desirable, watches are not the same. Unless its an apple watch of course.
Definitely agree with you about titanium - I’ve bought titanium watches 15 years ago when the tech was not as good as it is now and they weren’t sold at the titanium premium of today. Plus, there are many examples of full watches in titanium for less then the $3000 markup for these 2 watches.

The "OS" is what it is called not "ecosystem" is a personal preference, so it is a perfect example. I can build and fix computer too, so I know about technology as well. And if you don't buy all the other OVERPRICED Apple products good luck getting all you peripherals to work together properly and to have all features. Also Apple is one of the worst "Right to Repair" corporations out there.
@@thesilverpittie9632 I don't mean the OS, I mean the ecosystem of Apple products. How everything just works together, it reduces the friction for new users or users that are not tech savvy. I run my entire channel from my mac, including audio recording, filming and editing. All peripherals work flawlessly. The fact is, you can't buy an iPhone 'like' phone for a 1/4 of the price because its not an iPhone. Like you can't buy a Rolex on the cheap, similar to the 'homage' conversation we had over on my channel.
