I could see buying a coat and maybe pants from one of these brands. However I can very effectively layer with good base and mid layers without spending a fortune. Trust me these guys did not invent effective layering.

I cannot get over how similar we are. I have come to the same place you are with regard to arrows and broadheads and several years ago, we switched over to Sitka gear. The most comfortable hunting clothing I have ever worn. It is hard on the budget so I am always on the look out for deals which are few and far between. With Sitka, pretty much the price is the price no matter where you go but you can occasionally find a deal. While bow hunting for elk about 4 years ago, my buddy had an encounter with a cougar. It stared at him after he yelled at it and started to walk toward him not knowing what he was. After he moved and raised up his bow, it finally decided to leave at the 25 yard mark. Great stuff. Your wife is a gem and a good sport.

Sitka is truly amazing gear as I’m sure the other brands are as well, I think if you believe the science behind it like I do then sitka is a no brainer, as stated I’m sure the others are great.

KUIU is the best out there the way they made the camo is supposed to make sure you blend in with the environment Sitka I don’t know about but KUIUs rain jacket is 400 which is absurd but their normal jackets are 140-220 depending on what your environments are

I bought the mountain pants, the core lightweight hoodie, and the 90% jacket 3 years ago. With those three pieces (and appropriate layering) I have been able to hunt in full camo in everything from 80 degree high country early season to below zero in November. Everything is still like new. Super durable. I won an entire new system at TAC last year. Like you said, I shouldn't need new camo for ten years. From my experience, they'll last that long.

I have only watch two of your videos, and I think you found a new job! These are great videos. It is a good thing your wife is a good sport. So for the people who think Sitka, and kuiu are to expensive. I own a mixture of both. I mostly hunt with a bow and backcountry. Technical hunting is awesome. It is lighter, warmer, drys faster and you can wear it longer before it stinks super bad. With a 10 mile average per day hike all the above things are very important. Yes I have to budget to buy it, but it is worth it. I was hunting mule deer, got caught in the middle of a field and had eight does walk within 25yds of me. My hunting buddy, who never spends money on high end clothes, was watching from cover nearby. He could not believe his eyes. After that he was very interested in what hunting gear I had on, and how much it was. In my opinion, you can spend some money on ok gear a bunch of times, or you can bite the bullet and buy great technical hunting gear once.

I’ll say this. I have worn budget hunting cloths for years. I just recently broke down and spent a lot of money on Sitka gear and I’ll say that is was 100% worth it. It’s so comfortable and warm and it’s easy to layer. I have never worn any thing else like it. It doesn’t matter how windy or cold it is. I’m warm and I can’t say that about any other brand. I’m talking scent lock, mossy oak, Cabellas, real tree and many others I’ve tried. I’ve seriously just about tried it all over the years and nothing compares to Sitka.

I work outside in the elements daily, oilfield construction in northern Alberta. On my days off I'm either fly fishing on the rivers and lakes of Alberta or hunting around my family's farm in Saskatchewan and from my experience being out in the elements this new wave of high end gear is worth it, every penny of it! I'm not speaking of the actual camo patterns, they do look real cool though, it's the layering systems. It gives you such comfort, versatility/adaptability so you can still be mobile in the cold wet conditions. Merino wool base layers and socks are the best thing ever, pair it with a Helly Hansen onesie and you can crush the cold!

Man, the best pattern ever was the ASAT. Walked up to within 50 yards of a herd of elk. Some kind of rolling hills, they were in the bottom. I skylined on the hill, wide open the bull looked straight at me and didn't even flinch, just looked away. The small herd all walked right by, never gave me a second glance. I was sold on after that but have moved on because of the quality and build of these other three.
Also, Sitka has a legit 3XL and also a 2XT. First lite has none of that and the KUIU 3XL fits like a regular XL.

As far as camo goes for whitetail if you don’t move they won’t see you. I killed a buck a week ago at 10 yards. I had shed my outer shell because I was too warm. My under layer was simply a black fleece sweatshirt. Point is I didn’t move and he didn’t see me.

We're you drawing a bow? I've done a fair amount of my deer from a stool shoved back in an overgrown fence row. It's the draw that gets you busted. I 100% agree, if you don't move they can get super close if the wind is good.

Yeah just remember if you can see their eyeball they can see you. Yes I was shooting my Hoyt Powermax and shot him right in the heart. One other thing you didn't mention is Sitka offers different cut profiles. You can get a 2XL standard or wide for example and that is great if your a bigger guy or taller and lanky. They have more fit options where everything KUIU is board style. I am 5' 11" 260#'s 50" chest and KUIU turns into UA compression and their fits are so inconsistent. You may have a set of KUIU Tiburon Pants or Sierras and they fit completely different. I even have the same line of KUIU and the camo verses solid fit different so weird. The stuff from Canada fit better IMO.
And actually Sitka does to but it tells you hey a 38" pant fits more like 40" on a set of grinder but not on the Mountain pants. This is also a big reason for choosing SItka!
Onlything I like about KUIU is the Vias pattern and hip vents! The Tiburon pants are better than any Sitka pants light weight for hot hot weather other wise I am a Sitka Gal!
    Great Video!

Brandon, I've picked up your channel recently, and it's just some amazing content. I feel like hunting is a game of variables. You can add more success by better camo, better gear, better archery training, better scent control, but it will only take you up to 50%. The remaining 50 is your skill as a hunter. Recently did a spot and stalk and got within 5 yards of a doe. At eye level, I kept against a tree and was wearing maybe $100 worth of camo. She busted me when she caught my scent downwind when she got close enough. I just kept still. What's more confusing is The Hunting Publics channel. They rock the Walmart specials. You have the guys who wear plaid and smoke in a treestand but play the wind. You also have guys like Dudley wearing crazy new spectrum camo.

    • @brandonmcdonald6121
      @brandonmcdonald6121  3 года назад +1

I think the "hunting percentage" is higher than you give it. The camo gear is a combo for me. Dries fast, good pocket placement, super comfortable, quiet and stretchy. Knee pads are a huge bonus. HECS suits can't hurt, but I'm not sure how to measure how good things like that are. We are trying to squeak out every edge I guess.

Our grandfathers "average" hunting clothes were better quality than the newer "elite" hunting clothes out there. A lot of that comes down to being American made quality vs. stuff made other places. all that said, when you try on a $400 sitka jacket and some smooth First Lite underlayers, you understand what modern tech has added to the hunting world. I've had lots of luck using older mil-surp for under layering, with one nice piece of over garment. especially for early bow season, when temps are warm, you dont need much underlayer, and a nice leafy suit to go over. Late season, staying warm without sweating, and going out west and hiking 10+ miles to get a shot on an elk has different demands.
I'm at the age now where whatever gets people out in the woods, hunting ethically and enjoying the outdoors/nature, is a net benefit. If that's your old granpas flannel coat with some wal-mart longjohns, so be it. If you chose to bowhunt a stickbow and homemade arrows with only a loincloth, enjoy yourself. If you can afford 10k of clothing and gear that would make Steve Rinella jealous, then do that. Providing meat for your family, a trophy for the wall, or just a day to absorb the blue jays cawing at you and the squirrels chirping at you is the end goal, the clothing is just extra.

Nice video! The only reason I'm looking at Sitka/KUIU/First Lite is because I am looking for a Merino base/mid layer and the cost of these brands versus other solid color Merino wool clothing is pretty comparable. I've bowhunted wearing a wool plaid hoodie (which is warm, cuts the wind, is silent, and isn't too bad in the rain if you know how to dry it properly) from both the ground and treestand and have yet to get busted by a deer by them looking at me as long as I'm still. You do what you think is best for your hunting, but for me, playing the wind, wearing rubber boots, being still, being quiet, and wearing clothes not treated/washed with UV sensitive dyes are all above the pattern you're wearing (I think you could even get away with wearing solid colors in some situations). With all that said, I'm definitely leaning towards Sitka because I can stop by my local Scheels and look at them. There's something to be said about interacting with the product before buying it!

I really think that this is a very thought out video. I'm at that point in my life where I know I love to hunt every single thing that I can. I use my gear often and it's not the top brands, but I analyzed the things I don't like. Example: Being cold fast manly because I have to wear my stuff out and it's not the lightest thing in the world. I try my best to control my body heat because as we know you sweat you get cold faster or you start giving off a sent that's not very pleasant. On top of the weight issue it takes away my energy. If you think about it to will effect your hunt. I've grew up around family and friends that would say things about I can kill this and that with a Walmart special. There right to a point. I was always afraid in a weird way to wear anything top brand around them since I hunt with them most of the time. One day I seen a first light bennie on a sale that was the price of a Walmart special to see what the hype was about. Let me tell you that was one of the best investments I've ever done. I was sold from there. I wear that bennie that was a Merino wool in 25° riding my motorcycle for 45 minutes at a constant 80 mph. My body was so miserable and so freaking frozen, but my head was so danm warm. I couldn't believe it. So there is alot of truth in your theory. I would recommend to the people that are so skeptical just buy one item something on the low end and try it for them selfs. Really have nothing to lose. You can danm near sell it at the price you bought it for.

Hunting is a broad term. The guy who is in a house/cabin every night. Is way different then the guy wearing the same pants for 7 days in a row in the backcountry. By what suits your style. I wear sitka. Switched 4 years ago from Walmart camo.

Agreed. If you have a dry place to go back to every night, you can take more risks with your gear.

New to your channel, great videos. Could never see myself paying the money for high end gear like this, but after watching this video, I splurged on a Sitka beanie, best motorcycle head cover I've ever used. Probably get another for Black Hills hunting this fall. Subscribed.

Some of their gear is worth it. Some of their products are just so overpriced and other companies make better products (gloves, neck gaitor, gaitors, packs,...)
    Great video! 👍👍

MAJOR PROP'S if that's your wife, she looks young enough to be your daughter! ANYWAY, this is just my opinion, Sitka gear and the lot are NO WHERE NEAR THE MONEY they want for it!! C'mon damn near a grand for a full suit?????? No F'n way not this guy! Back when Scentlok was all the rage I was foolish enough to buy a full suit and I can HONESTLY SAY it made NO DIFFERENCE if I wore that suit or my 20 to 30 yr old Brown Duck huntin camo washed in scent free soap and I spray down with my own version of scent killer, ( Baking soda and water) cause that's all the sprays on the market are and I kill deer & bear my whole life and play the wind and VERY RARELY get winded.

    • @brandonmcdonald6121
      @brandonmcdonald6121  4 года назад

I still think it's worth it for the comfort factor. I'm with you on the scent control. Scent control is wind control imo

Great video. I have got the best camo and have spent lots of money 💰 on hunting equipment. But it is a fact that walmart camo and wrangler jeans have killed more trophy deer than anything on the market. But old school thermals from a regular store layered correctly with a decent waterproof shell that is quiet all pretty much works the same. But we buy came for us and how we want people to view us or status. So I beleive it is just a matter of preference ford vs gm vs ram. All get the job done.

Great video. I would add that being dry, comfortable, and warm has been happening way before sitka! I dont understand the stuff. I have worn it and dont see the value. But each person is different and values diiferent things.

Sure, it's the fit, comfort, pocket placement, weight, ability to dry out a bit faster, be a bit quieter etc. We spend a lot of $$ to get gear that's just a little better.

Hey Brandon - your videos are great!
Do you actually use and/or like the thumb loops? I really like my Celsius midi and Fanatic hoodie, but I find the loops really annoying. They are uncomfortable to actually use while hunting for hours. If I don't use them, I have to fold them up and it creates lots of fabric around my wrist, especially where I strap my release on.
I'm considering switching items / systems or maybe getting the sleeves altered.

The fact that they included the guy that helped design the Army's camo is a huge knock against the camo pattern and the "research" that they did to develop that uniform... Probably wasn't a good idea to include him for Sitka's page.

I’d love to see what you think of the HECS clothing and base layers.
I ended up with a mish-mash of KUIU pants, First Light shirt/head covering/gloves, a Columbia jacket, and Badlands pack/bino case. Considering a HECS base layer, as their vids a certainly persuasive.
Also, I’m concerned that I was more curious whether the pumpkin was getting too hot to hold, versus... maybe I gotta got get my ‘T’ checked, or something.

I'm getting back into hunting after many decades away. My passion in that time has been mountaineering. So I have all this high end mountaineering gear but now I have to acquire the same quality and functioning gear that is camo. Poor me. Anyone want to buy some Marmot clothing?

  • @timl8302

You left out Forloh. I still kind of like the old ASAT camo.
The big issue I have will different brands is that seasons & terrains change. I mean; I watch videos of guys & gals out in the western desert or field with dark tree camo on. Yet, they wonder why they blew the stalk on the Mule Deer. ....Yet we also buy for warmth & rain proofing.....There in lies a conundrum. I don't have an answer. besides buying three or four different camo pattern gear. Which isn't that practical.

Right now i have spent like a month trying to decide if i should buy the sitka stratus system or the scentlok BE1 fortress. Here in finland the whitetail and the hunting season in general gets a little bit cold, like around - 15c to - 30c thats around 59f to 86f. And i have been using the cheap dollarstore stuff for most of my hunting and i have been quite warm but it weights like a truck and it is really awkward to move with those clothes. The scentlock set would cost about 780 dollars and the sitka stratus jacket/fanatic bibs would cost around 1112 dollars. I know that sitka has the best outer layers you can get but is it really worth the extra 332 dollars? The main differences are that sitka uses primaloft and scentlok uses thinsulate but on the other hand sitka does not have the waterproof goretex layering, only the infinum windstopper. And scentlok uses off brand waterproofing and that is a big deal because here in finland i have to walk a few miles in knee deep snow to get to my stand and without waterproof pants it is game over. Lot of my friends use the scentlok BE1 system and i have tried one on myself and it is a good set of camo, but it feels kinda bulky and heavy for just an outer layer.

I think your temperature conversions are off. If it really is -15 to -30 C you need the incinerator series from Sitka.

    Brandon,
I’ve tried them all. I haven’t had as much luck with the camo in Sitka. I’ve got products from all three companies you talked about. When FL sold ASAT camo I bought a bunch for elk hunting out west. I got spotted by mule deer and elk in Sitka but not in FL asat. Now for here in Ohio hunting whitetail I use the FL fusion camo. But I must say my favorite two pieces are my Sitka pants and down pour rain gear. Just hate the camo. Not a kuiu fan at all and their customer service is horrible.
