Yeah, that was one downside about the remastered versions, replacing Howard Goodall's original scores with library scores. The observation dome and Holly's demise scores being among them.
I remember watching Red Dwarf in the early 90s and the Observation Dome music always really sounded amazing to me. "Holly says goodbye" is a wonderful longer edition of it.
Just realised listening to the music. You hear the Tongue Tied music before the actual episode in I think Better Than Life. I had all these on Mini Disc years ago when the DVD's came out.
@@gmann6269 but if you listen in Better Than Life where the Cat and Lister are eating and the Cat is fishing, the background music is a version of Tongue Tied
You can tell how much fun Howard Goodall was having with this job. The number of specialised stings for very specific moments or full parodies/stylistic homages to particular music styles that were only ever played partially in one scene is way higher than you'd expect for a low budget Beeb show. It's a tragedy that the Observation Dome didn't come back in later series
In series 3 they redid the whole look of the show and got rid of all the drab grey sets, which frankly looked crap. And to be honest, the observation deck set didn't look that great either, but those scenes have a nice novelty factor to them (though I think there's only 2 of them). The observation set theme is my favourite bit of music here too.
@@gmann6269 Not entirely sure but I never really ended up liking the sets from S3 onwards. Either they looked too cluttered or too sterile, in my eyes anyway. The prison bunk in S8 was nice, though.
@@Bruh-zx2mc At least the whiteness of the living quarters was more spaceship-like. Going for an all-grey look that's like the inside of a submarine or battleship doesn't make that much sense, battleships look like that because the whole thing is made of iron (or whatever metal). A spaceship wouldn't be made like that. Plus the S1/S2 sets are just poorly made and lack detail so they don't even pull off the submarine look properly. The S3 sets are clearly modelled on the inside of the ship in Alien and that was a great set design. I guess with Starbug in S6 they went back to a more dingy look but they did a much better job than S1.
Thanks for uploading these, got them all on DVD but it's a real hassle sometimes getting them out when you just want to have a quick listen to something.
By the way, I don't think I've managed to identify every track here (a few times there's more than one track between the timestamps). So if you know which scene a track is from, feel free to tell me and I'll edit the timestamps.
I came here just for the observation dome Holly reprise, SO GOOD it just melts my heart

Man the instrumental/lounge version of Tongue Tied is amazing

pity that wasn't in the 90s, series 2 was in 89
@@synaesthesia2010he probably watched the re-runs, all the recordings i have on tape of the early series are from the 90s
A shame the DVD didn't come with the music track of the rock music Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Holly danced to at the beginning of Thanks of the Memory.

Tongue Tied is played at the beginning of Parallel Universe (last episode of series 2)

@@gmann6269 IMO the gray submarine-like sets did something the newer sets didn't.

Just got a bunch of VHS tapes of red dwarf and wanted to listen to this before I watch some of them
