solid state amps forever. My favourite amp of all time is a Peavey Musician 400. I've played Oranges, Marshalls, Fenders, Mesas, Sovteks, 5150s etc.. and no amp and no person has ever given me a convincing argument that I need to play a tube amp. Solid state amps are reliable, cheap, unique and sound great and you can't change my mind
Damn right. I've gotten tones out of a Marshall Lead Mosfet, VS8100, and Sunn Concert Lead that rivaled any tone I've gotten from any tube powered amplification I've ever owned.
I had one of those. It took pedals better than anything that I'd ever owned. One day, I decided to sell it to a friend who had his gear stolen during a break-in. After all, I have more expensive tube amps. I instantly regretted it. I told him that if he ever decides to get rid of it, let me know first.
Both sound amazing. I have the Rockerverb 100 mkiii and love it. It’s good to know that a super crush will work as a great and affordable backup. Also, as someone who has been playing for about 25 years I’ve got to stop and say that this is the best time to be a guitarist. Solid state, modeling, and pedal options are better than they have ever been.
I got the supercrush because I play crummy punk venues or cover gigs and don’t like taking out my vintage bassmans and with the gain channel I only need a boost pedal. It’s a great option.
Super crush sounds good for the money. For me, tubes have a different feel to them in person but just regarding the sound, it’s pretty good. I’ll still never let go of my triple rec. it just pushes air unlike any solid state I’ve ever played and the feeling I get from that hasn’t been replaced with a solid state.
They sound amazing for low tuned stuff! If you want clarity without losing the clean and big sound, use a Klon style overdrive (wampler, soul food) in front!
In my experience, solid state is better at lower frequencies than tube. My non-scientific guess is probably having to do with the fact that for most solid and tube amps of a similar perceived volume, the solid state has more RMS wattage. While the tube can be driven into pleasing distortion in the mid and high frequencies, that does mean that the solid state has more clean power, and for lower frequencies, they need that energy to move. Consider that most bass amps these days are class D solid state these days. You can't beat clean RMS wattage when it comes to low frequencies.
I gig with a crush 35rt, mainly as a pedal platform. Solid state can get the job done with some tweaking, and it's pretty consistent. Orange has done great with the crush series.
@@guitarsgearandgoodvibeswit7306 checkout Mojotone speakers! They make some very accurate pre rola greenback clones and also a nice sounding V30 and H30 versions as well. Im rocking the scumback H55/J75 but the mojotones have peaked my curiosity in the M75 and how they might compare.
They sound so similar to each other... Orange did really an amazing job (again). My personal favourite was tone 2, it just something more interesting to my ear.
I'd have the Orange solid state series over any tube amp now. Owned and gigged many different tube amps (vintage suitcase to large stacks) and they are superb, but the delicacy, tube changing and potential for failure isn't worth it. The Crush series are so good now, that it isn't worth the extra hassle.
For those that like the sludgier sound, I would be curious to see how close you can get the super crush to the other by using an eq in the effects loop and boost the lows.
Such a amazing video. I can’t believe how incredibly close you got the tones. It completely tricked me hahaha. SS sounded like it had more dynamics and quality. But when you raised the gain you heard that nice warm smoothness and low end in the tube. Excellent video
the orange amps are clearly made for singing single notes that doom, stoner, southern, and sludge heads crave for. But it's pretty cool to hear it can also do the tight metal stuff albeit you gotta need an overdrive for that hyper modern djenty djent stuff.
I could tell straight away that it was No. 2 by the compression characteristics as it reminded me of certain high gain guitar pedals. However using JFETs in the gain stage was a cool move, it definitely has the Rockerverb character though but yes it's slightly tighter.
I think what really makes the Super Crush great is how it feels to play. And you can't judge that from a RUclips video. I've played the amp a bunch of times and it really has a great tube-like response that I really like.
The solid state seems tighter and more gain-y, but with less "fatness" to the mids, which is what I expected. That's why so many chuggers like to stick overdrives in front of their tube amps, to basically sound more "solid state."

Bought a new guitar a few weeks ago and played on a super crusher in the guitar store, I never played on an orange before but I really enjoyed playing on it. Was also very suprised by the 500 euro price tag
That's funny. When you started the first Tone, I was like: "that's a transistor". Then you played the second one and I was like: "They (almost) sound the same." Not a fan of the sound of this amp. But they nailed the transistor version to sound like the tube variant. Sticking to my Engl Savage 60 and Laney Ironheart though.

I'm definitely impressed with "today's" solid state tones; back in the 80's, I hated that nasty sizzle "saturation". It's still there, a little bit (I guessed tone 2 was the solid state), but it sure can be tamed nowadays.
The early version of ss amps where just using schematics of tube amps but replacing each triod with a bjt transistor (e.g. : fender ss 80's silverface). No surprise that sucks. But if a competent EE design a solid state amp from scratch no wonder he can totally achieve same tone as tube amps and in many way outperform it. Big company like fender and Marshall just did not bother to hire competent EE and/or leave them freedom to do the right thing. Add to that very often they where sold paired with shitty speakers and no wonder ss amps got bad rep.
there is a 10 percent transient clarity or punch with the tube a bit more fur or veil with the tranny, good sound still more glued, in a mix i would choose tube
I think if someone didn't tell me which was which and just said I can take home the one I think sounds best, I'd have picked Tone 2. They did a really good job on that amp.
For the bedroom player the SC100 is the way to go. You're not going to hear, or get, the benefits of the tubes until you get to neighbors-calling-the-cops volume levels. Orange has done an amazing job with their solid state amps. I tried out a friend's Crush 35 and was impressed. It's hard to find a better solid state amp at these price points Orange is selling them at.
I have one and I use it with two 4x12s and it sounds killer at low volumes, how ever the DI out is also REALLY good with the other "closed" back option button for DI out, it doesn't work for basic amplifier setups but I run my line 6 pod go into the back with my pre amp mode on my modeler into the return of FX loop and it just sounds and feels very tube like I'm happy with mine I'm gonna get another!
They both sound awesome. The Rockerverb sounds a little bit wider, and the Super Crush sounds a bit tighter. I like the Rockerverb better, but the price is so insane on the Super Crush I'm sure a pedal or two would get whatever sound you want.
Depends on the mix, and depends on the frequencies. A tube amp will cut through the mix just fine if the frequencies are dialed to cut. The tightness is just more of a tonal preference depending on the type of music you're playing... but it's not difficult to add tightness to a slightly looser tube amp with a boost.
Guess I gotta save up for a Rockerverb then. It's got that punch and clarity. It sounds more open to me where the Super Crush feels a little more compressed. Both are cool though.
I was recently looking into getting an orange amp for the purposes of hardcore/deathcore because I absolutely love the sounds they put out, but I couldn't for the life of me find an example that was in that realm, everything was doom metal or older classic metal/rock. Think i might finally ditch my Behringer gmx1200h for an orange.
Save all your money and buy a fractal FM3 is the best decision I made gear wise…I have more than 300 amps and hundreds of effects to choose from. I own a real 5150 and compared it with the fractal replica and it was the same sound I couldn’t tell the difference
I've got the older version of this test, a Rockerverb MKII 100w and a CR120H. The Rockerverb has a better feel when playing for me, however the CR120 is my favorite pedal platform amp. Both are incredible, especially for how affordable the solid state is. Also the older CR120 had more bass than the newer Super Crush heads do, which I like because I'm not paying tight modern metal, I'm playing thick fuzzy doom metal. Orange are awesome, they even make killer pedals.
I've played the Crush 120 and the Super Crush back to back, and the Super Crush feels a lot more like a tube amp. You should check it out, if you haven't already.
I knew what the rockaverb was when you panned to it and I could see the gain at noon. It didn't have the reactivity I look for, which I only get with like 3clicks past noon
That Ibanez could really do with some dampening on the Floyd springs! Orange tube amps have never been my thing really, but the Crush actually sounds pretty great
I own both and much prefer the rockerverb100mk3. The pummeling lowend and the depth to the distortion is much more pleasing to me. And Im a fan of both stoner music and extreme metal, so its really cool all i have to do is turn off my overdrive to change genres tonewise. the rockerverb is also noticeably louder
Did you ever get the chance to see how both the amps sound in stereo by any chance? I figured that you could get the clarity and high end from the super crush, and the low end from the Rockerverb so that you get the best of both amps.
Up the solid states!!!! You should do a comparison between an old Randall solid state, and say, a 5150 or Triple Rectifier or even combine em to get some God-like toan??
Went the super crush route and ended up getting rid of my 2 tube amps and attenuator. My old rig was overkill to play at home volume only, since I do not gig or record.
Which one is your favorite and why? Let me know! 😎
Super Crush because it sounds more modern and scooped with the tweaked settings.
But with the same settings I preferred the rockerverb.
Both...depends on what for...but considering 1500 price difference, I'd go for the transistor .
Supercrush ! I did a video for a bogren contest where you said the tone was killer and it was from that little shit !
I like the tube amp, but hard to tell unless heard in context to either a live band or a recording.

Everyone should have an Orange in their arsenal, if you ask me 😜
@@giosundance5643 I'm on your side (QC), but some people just want an amp and that's also a cool thing. I have both.
great test, both are good to use!
Love solid state amps!
I too have the MKii 100W, and love it! It works just fine for Andreas Kisser.
Man for $500, that's an amazing value!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
I knew what the rockaverb was when you panned to it and I could see the gain at noon. It didn't have the reactivity I look for, which I only get with like 3clicks past noon
That Ibanez could really do with some dampening on the Floyd springs!
Orange tube amps have never been my thing really, but the Crush actually sounds pretty great
Super annoying! It was impossible to mute it.
Both sound good but the rockerverb has more umph
I liked the super crush better. The transient was a bit punchier on the chugs. Both were nice and chewy in the mids.
I always help love the Rabdall stuff was a bit two dimensional, but maybe it’s worth another try
Fair point, you could get an array of top/legendary solid states THEN do some combos??
I put a GE7 in the loop for a bit more bottom and presence, gets ya even closer.
You can tell how fast the tube shortage is coming with how many people are trying to push solid state amps now!😂😂😂
This video was the reason why i bought the crash, i believe the lows can be fix with EQ.
Are you enjoying the amp?
@@KohleAudioKult the item is still shipping lol. keep you posted.
Enjoying it so much now@@KohleAudioKult
Went the super crush route and ended up getting rid of my 2 tube amps and attenuator. My old rig was overkill to play at home volume only, since I do not gig or record.
I'd love to hear them clean
