Thank you so much Shishir sir for sharing this wonderful information on Shyama'ji . She is my very very favourite ; I like her naughty smile accompanied with her dancing , expressive & mesmerizing eyes . I love her dances as well . I loved her pairing opposite Rajendra Kumar Tuli sahab in 'Khazanchi' (1958) as well as with Talat Mahmood sahab in 'Lala Rookh' (1958) . I also loved her performance ( side heroine’s role ) in 'Tarana' (1951) which had my most favourite actor Dilip Kumar sahab in it ; I liked her performance there too . Besides Hindi films , she starred in a series of Punjabi films as well opposite heroes like Amar Nath sahab ( 'Lara Lappa' (1953) ) , Majnu sahab ( 'Posti' (1950) ) & Daljit sahab ( 'Koday Shah' (1953) ) as well . In 'Koday Shah' (1953) , her name wasn't there in the film credits . In Hindi films , she also worked opposite heroes like Balraj Sahni sahab , Sajjan Lal Purohit sahab & Sunil Dutt sahab as well . We pray for the peace of her soul . 🙏
In a newspaper interview ( 19 November , 2006 ) , Shyama'ji had mentioned that before her marriage , she had been in love with Talat Mahmood sahab . She said , "Very few people know that I was in love with him . It started as the crush of a fan , but I was destined to meet him too . He proved to be every bit the heartthrob that anyone could imagine .
I'd describe my relationship with Talat Mahmood as 'Dil Diya Dard Liya' - he has gone living me with memories . Humein Dard Deke Chale Gaye Woh . He was my heartthrob . Actually , I was in love with him even before I ever saw him . His songs on the radio would drive us mad . I was in my early teens when I became aware of his beautiful voice .
One day , I was in Pune shooting for a film for Datta Dharmadhikari when I received a call from A. R. Kardar . He told me he wanted to cast me in a film . I asked who else was there in the cast & he said , "Talat Mahmood . " You can imagine my delight ! The film also had Peace Kanwal .
Once when we were shooting for this film 'Dil-e-Nadaan' , the lights went off . The scene we were shooting had Talat lying down & me sitting beside him . When it suddenly became dark , he held my hand & you can imagine , my heart did a somersault . So , I realized he was attracted to me too ! Anyway , the lights came on & we were quickly called to attention . I remember reading in this magazine called 'Shama' that he got married in Calcutta . My heart broke . I was genuinely in love with him ; it was not just a crush . I would've married him but circumstances willed otherwise . God makes pairs in heaven . I was destined to marry Fali Mistry , the great cinematographer . I was from Lahore , Fali from Iran , but see how we met & married .
We did another film 'Lala Rookh' together . The songs were outstanding - "Pyaas Kuch Aur Bhi Bhadka Di Jhalak Dikhla Ke..." . The way Shaheed Latif picturised that romantic song of Lala Rookh remains in my memory still . "
