"Education is a better safeguard to liberty than a standing army." Learning is work and therefore needs to be paid. Brain labour. You could say that children get "paid" to learn with room and board. Their "job" is to learn to be functional adults and the job of the adult student is to learn how to be contribute positively to society. We all benefit from an educated workforce.
And good for him. The girl interviewed did not want to enroll in college because of debt. If one chooses not to invest in themselves, then don't expect someone else to do so.
