Met Betye in LA through a mutual friend actress, Marguerite Ray. I lived in Laurel Canyon in the 70s and at that point Black artists were plentiful. Artist Suzanne Jackson created a artists salon at her art Gallery over off Fairfax and Wilshire. Artists would meet and talk art. Betyre was doing her “derogatory art” when I met her. An extraordinary artist and person👏🏾
Two things she said that stuck with me…I’m happy making the work & “Heart and spirit for longevity”. Thank you Betye Saar. 🙏🏽
