  • Program notes by Maestro Andrew Sewell:
As part of the California Festival, we are beginning with Kotuku by New Zealand composer, Christopher Blake, written in 2020, written in 202 and receiving its West Coast Premier. It features Native American Flute performed Tim Blueflint Ramel. Kotuku was commissioned by Andrew and Mary Sewell in 2019, and premiered in March 2021 by the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. It follows the emotional trajectory of Mary's short film, Let Your Sisters Be, which tells the story of two sisters who were abused by a trusted family friend. The film's strength comes from the simple non-graphic wait deals with dark secrets and generations of silence. By using storytelling and elements of Maori myth and legend, it raises awareness and creates a pathway to hope and resolution. The Kotuku, or white heron, is of a mythical status, mysterious and beautiful. To be graced by a sightings good fortune and a rare compliment. The Kotuku is a key symbol in the film and is represented by the Putorino (Maori flute) or in this instance, the Native American Flute. This musical motif is carried into the orchestral work, together with the chant invoking the spirit of the Kotuku, and appears near the end of the film. These elements come together in a dramatic graveside climax and are resolved by a serene lament played on a solo violin.
West Coast Premier Date: November 4, 2023
