    I got the same colors in the skinny rose gold palette a couple of years ago. The beginning of my love affair with Mijello. Tip- use the red brown to tone down the greens. It makes gorgeous natural greens then. Mix it with PG7 for a Van Dyke green.

    • @MirandaWatsonArt
      @MirandaWatsonArt  Год назад +2

      I LOVE Van Dyke Green, so thank you for the suggestion. I always tell my students to use the reds to tone down their greens, so it's a great lesson for them to not have exactly the right green mix all the time. I also like to use Burnt Sienna and either Ultramarine or Prussian Blue to alter the greens as well. It's so fun!

    Glad that you finally got this uploaded, Miranda! Thank you for sticking at it! I definitely prefer your painting to your tutor's. Yours is warm and summery while hers is more a sunny, but very cold winter scene - like today here in the uk - where the shadows are grey and cool. Neither fully reflects the atmosphere of the reference, which was a very monotone, lifeless photo, and I prefer both to that, but yours has all that I'd be looking for in this sort of scene!
    It's a joy to see your enthusiasm for the paints! I dont really understand why they've used mixed pigments for the earth colours, but they're still very pretty. Like you, I'm curious to see how much that grill pan holder get in the way when you're using the palette more, and just how much paint accumulates underneath it, That matters to me, as I like to be able to wipe my brush on the edge of the pans, and I can't see that working with this grill.
    I hope you manage to see your critiques, and can share them with us. If you can't see them online, maybe she can email them to you?
    Work deadlines are calling. 🙃

    • @MirandaWatsonArt
      @MirandaWatsonArt  Год назад +1

      This was a really fun set to work with. I do anticipate having to take off that black holder in the future, but only time will tell. I thought it was pretty cool that the reference photo was kind of boring because then we could see if we could bring our own life into the painting. That's true with so many photos that I'd like to paint. I need to find ways to spice them up!

    Lovely painting! I just ordered the set of pure pigment Mission Gold tubes to try, I haven’t tried any Mjello products yet. I seem to be addicted to cute travel palettes and the paints in this one look fantastic, but I think the black plastic piece holding the pans would annoy me.

    I got the empty 24 palette since i already had an extra 24 7ml tube set that wasnt being used. The colors are a bit different, only two yellows, the lemon and the deep, they include opera pr122 instead of the shade of pr122 you have, instead of prussian they add indigo, and hookers green instead of the bright yellow green. A really nice selection and usually sells for about 30 dollars if you need at least some of your refills. Rewatching this video reminded me to fill it up. Hopefully the black part doesnt get in the way as i fill them..... im too lazy to disassemble it properly before filling, but i may not have a clean choice...

    I actually use my palette the way they set it up - with the lid towards me - so I can pull paint out of the pan and put it on the mixing tray so it's closer to me. But I usually set the swatch sheet to the side. Yes, MG is honey based! But does NOT seem to run or fail to cure the way M Graham does.

    Wow, fun seeing this palette! I have seen another smaller MG pan palette in the past, but I don't think it's available anymore. I think that was when they first came out or something. I've been loving my MG set too, it has many of the same colors (mine is the 24 pure pigment, and it's only 2 dollars more than this set... )
    I'm also finding I really like the Yellow Ochre! First time I've liked one! Oh and the Rose Madder is the first PR 176 I've had, and I LOVE it. It's perfect for painting fruit. I like their Permanent Red Deep PR254 a lot as well, it's not too opaque. The Indanthrone is to die for! (I had to order it separately and it was so expensive!) I want that Peacock Blue - I find I'm missing a phthalo turquoise in my set, which is one of the few convenience mixes I really like.
    They make a Cobalt Black which is so unusual and it does granulate! But Jackson's doesn't sell it. Hmm. I did find it on eBay and may still pick it up. If so, I'll send ya a half pan :)
    Have to give them credit for including a decent swatch sheet! I had to laugh at Schmincke, who included a sheet that had too many squares, didn't fit in the tin, and was on flimsy paper....
    Oh, Mission Gold - you and your crazy color naming! I do love Cerulean for skies, but of course they did the typical inaccurate naming that's rampant through the line. Their 'cerulean" is phthalo blue of course, and "viridian" phthalo green. And that crazy 3 pigment Burnt Sienna, although yes it really does look nice. I agree the sap green is too bright - I'd try adding a bit of the perm red deep and/or the Rose Madder to tone it down.
    You have pointed out an important principle: The more cotton a paper has, the more absorbent it'll be - resulting in better bleeds and durability, but more color shift. So I think cotton is very good if you know you want to layer or do wet on wet. And if one wants to lift, or wants lots of "flying white" (spots left unpainted in brushstrokes), cellulose is the way to go! So they absolutely both have their advantages and disadvantages. Many UK watercolorists adore Bockingford, which is only made in cellulose. I'm curious about the Etchr paper and how it compares to other 100% cellulose. The solution on cotton for the drydown: Use Stronger Paint! If you can get it in one layer, do, by laying it down and not fussing with it, which results in that fresh look.
    I do think the Hahnemuhle books do soak up diluted, light paint a lot. It's quite absorbent because it's aimed towards urban sketchers and they like their layers to dry right away. I have wonderful results when I use strong enough paint though!

    • @MirandaWatsonArt
      @MirandaWatsonArt  Год назад +1

      Oooh - the Cobalt Black sounds intriguing! Yes to everything you said here!

    • @MrsBarnabas
      @MrsBarnabas Год назад

      Just a difference of opinion on a couple of points: Cotton paper: as with any type of paper, cotton or cellulose, it depends on the brand and on the sizing, but most 100% cotton watercolour papers are not more absorbant than cellulose. They are sized specifically to allow the paint to sit longer on the surface in order to allow time for the paint to move. I don't find any problem with lifting or dry brush (flying white) either. Note: I've been doing a trial of eleven watercolour papers over the last year.
      Second point: "Many UK watercolorists adore Bockingford,".
      Ask most "Bockingford" artists which paper they use for their commissioned work and you will get a very different answer. Yes, again, I know - Every workshop / demonstration I've been to at the big art fairs, eg Artist and Illustrators, the artists have been using Bockingford, and when asked, they do not use Bockingford for their own work. They use Bockingford because they are sponsored to do so / it's the paper supplied for the demo / workshop.
      A point on which we do agree is the problem of the Hahnemühle colour shift, which *is* a major problem, as is the uneven sizing on some pages, but according to their launch video, it's not solely intended for urban sketchers.

    • @MrsBarnabas

      @@MirandaWatsonArt I've added a reply to Jenn, Miranda, on the topic of cotton papers, the preference of so many UK artists for Bockingford and the Hahnemühle 250gsm sketchbook problems.
