    I used compost and peat moss and vermiculite stirred together, it’s all I had . So far so good , they’ve begun to grow 😊

      The best mix is what you reasonably have on hand 😊

      Equal parts of those three is called Mel's Mix and is a key component of the square foot gardening method. It works fabulously for growing plants.

    Great tips. I agree you shouldn't press really hard, (I used to do that when i was first starting out, & I cpuld barely get the seedling put when it came time 😂) but you should tamp down a little tiny bit, or pick the tray up a couple of inches & then drop on table to get it to settle a little, because once they get larger seedlings, & you spray with a watering can, instead of just a spray bottle, you'll see that the soil will drop about 1/2 an inch & your seedlings will not have any support when it settles & theyll be all falling over. Unless when you fill the tray you are being super careful to fill a little tiny bit at a time, then maybe its getting filled all they way... i giess it depends. But i know when i just grab handfulls & pour over, lots of small little sticks will usially orevent the entire cell from filling all the way up.

    But everyone else says compaction is good when starting out ? It makes the seed think it’s deep underground . What am I missing

      My agriculture teacher who has been studying and doing this for years tells us to compact it. It works well.

    • @inheritedskill
      @inheritedskill  Год назад +2

      You’re inherently going to compress it a little with seeding. Even soil blocks aren’t compacted just slightly compressed.

    How ofter tray should be watered (and in what way) if I use a humidity dome? Not sure how to understand is the soil too wet/too dry?

    If you don't compact you don't remove the air holes. As soon as you water it's gonna collapse and compact. Then when you try and remove your plugs it's going to collapse because there is no density.

    • @inheritedskill
      @inheritedskill  Год назад +4

      I appreciate you trying to convince me that compaction is necessary. I have done this method for years and it was something taught in my master gardening courses to all the master gardeners. It works fine and gives the seeds a good start. If compacting the soul works for you and you want to stick with it, great! It’s just not what i have found to work best and wasn’t what I was taught to be best practice. Fully off the opinion of if something works, don’t fix it. And sometimes it’s different from person to person.

    Where is the ideal place to put the tray? Full sun or would part sun do best? This is my first year germinating seeds.

    • @inheritedskill
      @inheritedskill  Год назад +2

      @@inheritedskillhello! We live in the tropical part of the world and our place, we're experiencing almost daily rains due to the monsoon season. I was wondering if it's okay to still get started on planting seeds. I hope you'll respond. Thank you! 😊❤

    You're wrong and seed starting mix needs compaction. If you dont, water wont draw up from the bottom and there will be air on the roots
