My 2 cents for the 1st question is empire money efficiently channeled into dev institutions and universities, mass media, and religious institutions that significantly and effectively reduced left thinking powers and unfortunately increased short term tactical approaches. I studied with Bob Brenner, Perry Anderson, Maurice Zeitlin, Ivan Szélenyi, Bill Roy, et al. Imperialism and extractive colonialism have been neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for the development and spread/establishment of capitalist property relations and capitalist relations of and in production. Furthermore, that the liberal egalitarian critique of imperialism and extractive colonialism is simpatico with a radical, Marxist critique of capitalist imperialism should come as no surprise, given Lenin's pamphlet and its precursors (esp. Hobson).
