From 50+ years a industrial and farm equipment mechanic now retired, I've found welding a washer to the bolt first then a nut to that works much better. You can get a better weld in a washer to the bolt and on the outside of the nut to the washer. Plus double heating and cooling helps as well.
Robby, add a winch to the rear, either on the bumper on on that great bed. You may be able to get that from Harbor Freight. Don't they sponsor Matt? Also be sure that there are rear facing tow lights on the bumper to illuminate night time trailer hook-ups. Lastly, consider adding mounts above the bed for warning strobes and spot lights. Those bed bolts are actually a Torx Plus, not just your regular torx bit. It is a Ford specific tool, but allows those bed bolts to be removed using a good 1/2 drive impact and saves lots of hassle removing them!
I was impressed with that bed which was "custom made" to fit Matts Blue Steel, until I watched all of the fabrication Robbie had to do to install it to this typical Ford Super Duty short bed chassis. That bed should have come ready to bolt-on IMO!
Wow I had no idea it would be this much work to put a flat bed on. I assumed it’d bolt right up and you’d just have to do a little wiring for lights & trailer plugs, but this is a whole lot more involved. You guys are really going the extra mile for Matt on it. I know it’s a work truck, but I hope you polish it all up when it’s together so it looks nice when done. I’m not a Ford guy but that one’s been a loyal workhorse.
18:40 .. I grew up on a farm my Dad fixed up a few trucks for flatbeds over the years .. he always used hardwood on top of (and parallel) to the frame rails, he'd run it through the planner until it was the perfect thickness .. Then he'd use 3" or 4" channel iron as the cross members, BUT with the "U" part of the channel iron facing UP And more hardwood planed to fit perfect inside the channel ... THEN bolt it all to the frame with long threaded rod (high grade stuff) ... Worked great!:) old school :)
Have you ever considered powder coated the cosmetic surfaces and using a sprayable bedliner on the flat work surfaces? power coating can be brittle and not standup to surface impacts for tools etc. Just a thought
I was thinking a paint guy sure Powder coat stuff a lot. These guys know what they are doing I'd paint the bed so it can be fixed when it gets crashed so maybe my assumptions are wrong.

Hey Robby, get yourself an induction heater if you don’t already have one, you can pick one up for around $200 bucks and they work great on those terrible Ford bed bolts. Heat the heads up for 1-2 minutes then impact. The inductor concentrates the heat in the bolt and helps to melt the over abundant amount of thread locker ford uses on them as well as free up any rust. Those induction heaters also work great on seized up suspension bolts, just be careful if there is a rubber bushing or covered joint that the bolt is going through because it can melt that easily.

If you buy a new pickup, take each bed bolt out one at a time and put them back in with a generous coating of never-seize on all of the threads. That will make them much easier to remove later if you need to. Do the same thing on all of the exhaust bolts/studs before they get crystalized and they will be a lot easier to remove later if you need to without worrying about twisting them off and then having to drill the bolt/stud out.
Now the headache rack is too tall. I wonder if there was a way to recess the verticle bars into the horizontal bars and weld them together to let the bed sit lower. It is probably better to be higher because it goes off road with a loaded trailer all the time.
@@Westerntraveler Timbren bump stops are just solid rubber bags lol that only kick in when the bed starts to sag, but they are far better than nothing at all.
