It’s an ancient spice that was domesticated during the Bronze Age in Greece and has long been the most expensive agricultural commodity by weight - currently selling at around R200,000 per kilogramme. Lending a unique and much sought-after taste to cooking and useful in medicines and dye production, saffron is “red gold” and the international demand has never waned. Now, from the vast expanses of the Northern Cape to Gauteng, Carte Blanche meets local farmers who are unfurling the secrets of the exquisite purple flower that produces only three precious strands as they’re working to set up a local saffron industry for the export market.

A plant based product that creates jobs, brings foreign income to the country and has no negative effects on the environment, a win win win formula. Wishing all these farmers the very best in growing SA's Red Gold.

You'll shouldn't have disclosed that R200k figure. One day they will wake only to realize all the crops are gone. Crime is very high in this country

Subjectively and cynically speaking, saffron can also be a disappointing, massively overpriced seasoning. On par with truffles and caviar. We can often fall for these overhyped, sometimes "mystical" culinary "delights" that suggest amazing palate pleasures - only to be unamazed. Good luck to these farmers with their enterprise though!!

Most 'saffron' is cut with dyed safflower stamin that taste like nothing but are cheap and fill the bottle. I'll bet that's what the problem is. Or it was treated poorly in transit. Spices can be delicate
