Cambodia: Ex-Khmer Rouge leader loses genocide appeal

- A UN-backed war crimes tribunal has rejected an appeal by the last surviving leader of the Khmer Rouge armed group.
The court in Cambodia has upheld the genocide conviction and life sentence handed to 91 year-old Khieu Samphan in 2018.
He was head of state during the rule of the Khmer Rouge, when two million people were killed.

Never forget, China supported this government. Vietnam invaded Cambodia and China was so upset that they invaded Vietnam but utterly failed in their goal of making Vietnam leave Cambodia. After enough casualties, China declared that “successfully taught Vietnam a lesson,” and left the country after achieving nothing.
Tbh all countries besides Vietnam failed Cambodians during the regime, both China and the US supported the gov while the UN did nothing until after the invasion by Vietnam.

They failed to save them but still found a way to play it off as a victory to their own people. “We teach Vietnam a lesson”. The entire rest of the world recognizes it as a failure to achieve their stated goals.
Laos and the people's republic of Kampuchea were also involved, its just that vietnam played the larger role
It take too long to prosecute war crimes ,it should have been prosecute back in the 1980... not 40, 50 years later. 2 million peoples lost their life, it's not worth it!

The (current?) prime minister was as footsoldier for the KR (he later defected). Just goes to show how involved all layers of society were in the regime. Many Cambodians were involved in the KR. While many were victims and survivors, many were also carrying out the will of the Angkha. Many were simultaneously victim and oppressor. As a result, most of the country would rather let sleeping dogs lie then try to deal out justice, as doing so would implicate much more people than they'd be comfortable with.
Hun Sen took away all power from the King Sihanouk and Sihamoni, and was responsible for the 1997 clashing between Ranariddh and Hun Sen, leading into a huge disaster.

Yeah. Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge leaders are actually national heroes. They just wanted to build agricultural paradise as Mao Zedong proposed and make Khmer Empire great again. But unfortunately, Vietnam invaded Cambodia and disrupted that process. They did not directly killed anyone, they should live peacefully to the end of their lives like Pol Pot, not sentenced or executed
