Hi Ian, I would diagnose this differently. Get the oil filter off and cut it open with a filter cutter or send it off for oil testing. This will let you know if it's had particles circulating. Also pull the big end bearing caps and look for any scoring. After that I'd pull the oil pump apart and look for signs of any junk going through it. Even so, the engine is most like salvageable if you're prepared to strip and reassemble. Otherwise it comes down to an assessment of ease of replacing it with a good used motor. P. SI have spare rods if you need them.
Awesome info! Thank you so much 🙏🏽 I won't be spending any more time investigating any further. I have the spare engine sitting nearby so now will be doing my best to get that serviced an installed into the engine. Thanks for the info on spare rods! Might call you up on that offer ;)
Hi ! Glad to see another videos with a Mk1 TT, since I do some repears on mine ( 225 2001 BAM ). Just changed the oil pump a month ago. I’v have noticed little oil leak in the middle of the engine. I suspect the turbo or the oil pipe from it. Have to look further. Anyway, I’ll see your work with great interest.
Hi Rene. I hope your oil leak problem isn't too bad! At least it can hold oil 😂 Thanks for watching and I look forward to getting this project driving!
Good question marcooconnor - I don't know neither does the previous owner but I have a feeling it wasn't a power issue. Rather the known weakness of stock rods when torque hits on a hybrid turbo tune/setup. The increased torque load on a hybrid turbo is quite a lot more than an OEM turbo so that wouldn't have helped the poor OEM rods.
What makes you think the rods are bent? The engines dropped, sumps smashed, oil’s gone, it’s been driven without oil pressure! May be repairable but the metal deposits in the windage tray (black plastic thing) will be bearings.
@@ianpgonzaga there’s some side movement on the crank journal which could account for the difference on the piston pin position, I doubt very much that the engine will have had the abuse that would bend the rods.
Great job mate I did the oil pickup pipe replacement

Learning heaps!
Ouch.
Hoping it's not quite as bad as it looks and you don't need to make a decision on repair/ rebuild vs just getting another engine.
It's bad. Hahaha
But luckily I have a replacement engine about 3eters away from the filming of this video ;)
Ian, any idea what bhp/torque this car was running to have bent the rod?

Small end not sitting centre on the wrist pins made me super suspect.
