The Vespa, the sporty Italian motorbike, is as much a fashion accessory as it is a set of wheels. Seth Doane visits the Vespa factory in Pontedera, Italy, and takes a trip through Rome with Annie Ojile, an American expat who started a Vespa tour company, Scooteroma. Look out for steep cobblestone streets in Rome. I tried riding a Vespa in the area near my student hotel and I almost flipped it as it skidded. A scary moment. // On another note: one afternoon in San Francisco all the traffic on Haight Street slowed to a crawl. We heard the sound of thousands of bees getting louder and louder. Suddenly a large group of hipsters showed up on Vespas, everyone decked out in classy 1960's swank. I treasure that memory.

I have a 2023 Vespa GTS 300 in Drago Rosso. Yep it's quite the head turner. I call it my midlife crisis cycle.

first thing I did when I moved to Italy in 1983 was to buy a used Vespa - a 1956. Rode it for a year but got fed up with road tax and insurance issues and gave it away.
