  • The standard configuration of the symphony orchestra has remained mostly unchanged for the past century. But innovative artists continue to design new instruments to create sounds never before heard. Correspondent David Pogue attended the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition at Georgia Institute of Technology, where groundbreaking acoustic and electronic instruments were demonstrated.

    You forgot a very popular instrument invented by Adolphe Sax from Belgium in the 1840s. First patented in Paris in 1846, we have the whole family of saxophones!

    • @saxmanmatt1574

      Vibes and then saxophone for sure! Can't believe they missed the sax.

    • @RobertSaxy
      @RobertSaxy 6 дней назад +8

      They were talking about orchestral instruments and even though saxophones do rarely show up in orchestral worksit’s not an instrument that’s a part of orchestras. The one they missed (probably because it’s not immediately obvious) is the bass trombone

    • @brucekuehn4031
      @brucekuehn4031 5 дней назад +2

      We could also mention the Wagner tuba which he had made for a noble sound in his Ring Cycle. It’s a rarer instrument usually played by horn players but other composers have also used them. Hard to imagine the Jazz world though without the sax!

    • @JohnLRice
      @JohnLRice 5 дней назад +1

      I also wondered why saxophones weren't mentioned so I looked it up to refresh my memory. Saxes aren't a standard part of string orchestras but they are a standard part of concert bands, which may also be called a wind ensemble, a symphonic wind band, or a symphonic wind orchestra. I get confused because way back when I was in school I regularly performed in both types of groups at the same time. And I know I probably performed "orchestral" pieces that included both strings and saxes, especially 20th century avant garde compositions.

    • @brucekuehn4031
      @brucekuehn4031 5 дней назад

      And don’t forget Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band from 1972 until his death in 2011.
      Countless pop albums and film scores - be a sad musical world without the invention of the sax!

    These are really intriguing instruments alright, and I’m all for them, but I don’t think any are likely to get into orchestras in particular.
    An instrument from a few decades ago, that I still think has potential, possibly even in orchestras, is Ellen Fullman’s “Long-Stringed Instrument.” I like to think of it thus: Her “LSI” is to an oboe, kinda what a glass harmonica is to a flute.”
