Major card traders who get the set spoilers early definitely do this. They will jack up the price of synergy cards immediately, having stockpiled them beforehand

When I trade cards in to my LGS I always get more value that what I paid for on my buy list. Retail pricing is ridiculous. It also allows me to sell cards now and then too for great profit.
Frontier, the precursor to Pioneer, was gaining popularity around that time. Due to their similarities, some cards, like Jace (which peaked at $90), were speculated on. It was believed a new format was imminent, as the time since Modern's creation matched the interval from MTG's inception to Modern's creation. I was pretty hyped because I had already bought a playset of Jace for Standard. I was speculating on a lot of cards I thought were going to be good in the format.
Its always going to happen when money is involved. Its delusional to think it doesn't. We can complain or try to use it to your advantage. Its not going anywhere.
To reference a time my speculation didn't work out, I spent $100 on a few Mox Tantalite. Still holding with diamond hands waiting for them to pop off lol.
Cards are commodities not regulated assets. Our LGS owner was given the info JTMs and Stoneforge were getting banned 2 weeks before the announcement. Distributor let him know when ordering the event decks. The distributor had the info from an employee. Been happening for years and is toxic as hell for all involved.

You'll never never convince me otherwise after watching that.I kept track of it because I have 13 of them from when I used them in standard and I was completely dumbfounded by the price of a non reserve list uncommon.
It would be tricky to trade in paper cards, a bit easier for many reasons to trade in mtgo cards but harder to cash out. It would be super easy to sell the information to a group of non-greedy friends that can buy or sell outside the perview of wotc.
Highly doubt any wotc staff are dumb enough to directly spec on cards themselves with insider info. If anything, they might sell information to a reseller

And then what 3 shops listed TONS of those things that were vacuumed off the market for 3 weeks.... for 1/10th the new market price. But yeah.. look at who work for those stores and are (were) on the FPL then and it clicks
Before it was announced caught a big reprint in Wilds of Eldraine I noticed that the full art foil of versions of Doubling Season double masters and original foils were losing a lot of value / being offered at much lower prices. Doubling Season was a upward moving or at least stable card with the 2xmaster full art foils holding about $160 Suddenly I was seeing on eBay multiple copies for about $130 as low as $120 I thought hmmmmm….. something is going on and since it’s not a reserve list card I should chill. Show enough it gets a pretty significant reprint in Eldraine.
people make mistakes and develop gambling debts and and other types of debts that getting fired would be the least of their problems… to a normal person it doesn’t make sense however people get them selves in desperate situations and desperate times call for desperate measures and i’ve seen it happen ALOT
It wouldn't surprise me if Dockside gets banned on the next commander B&R update. It also wouldn't surprise me if the people that influence that list and their friends were holding precisely 0 copies of it.
You obviously do not understand the psychology of the criminally minded. High risk is not a deterrent but challenge. There are two types of criminals; those who are too dumb to know they cannot get away with it, and those who are smart and believe that they are smarter than everyone else. In the case of insider trading, it’s predominately the latter. To these people the thrill of getting away with it is their motivator. The people who follow the rules are just too stupid to pull it off and the safety nets put in place are designed to catch them, not someone in my league, this is the mindset of these criminal types. Indeed the system is designed to catch most of the predicable criminal patterns. There will always be people capable of gaming the system. The system will always find ways to plug the leaks. I’m certain that the average WOTC employee does follow the rules, as a person with a moral compass will. But there will always be those few who think they’ve figured out what everyone else has missed.
Nah no way people working at wotc, people who get product weeks in advance for reviews and content or people in charge of the banlist would game the market to make a couple grand in a week….. Or even the “pro” players who for sure we’ve never had any e mail leaks etc proving they get info in advance to prepare for tournaments…
