Shane was a police officer at heart. He never got over having to kill Otis. Along with the stress, and being viewed as a mad man by the rest of the group, and basically being an outcast, it broke him down. He was a cop who just pretended to be attuned with how the world was.
True Shane would have been the best asset to the group along with that they will also have rick whos the best leader adding to the fact that shane and ricks bond is the best and theyve been together for the longest out of anyone
But it was for the best,his early death stapled him as one of the most iconic characters on the show (idk if that would've been the case if he'd still be alive afterwards)
Shane was such a strong character compared to most of the characters we see in TWD he was strong mentally and Physically but he did his job to show Rick what you have to do in the new world to keep Lori and Carl safe

No thats not true it wasnt because he just wanted lori and carl any rational person would save them he just needed the right support instead of being manipulated by Lori people forget that shane already knew them way before anyone aside from rick shane was basically carls godfather at some point and rick probably wouldnt even have mind rick and shane have been together for over 2 decades and thats the longest any character has known rick for their bond,dynamics,depth and complexity is the best in the show

He really did have to kill Otis because he knew if he died Otis would die to there was no way for either one of them to make it out both alive
Killing Otis definitely changed Shane, after that he no longer had any moral restraints.
