  • It has been a rough winter in the Pacific Northwest and I needed a break so I headed south where the weather forecast called for perfection - Death Valley! My first stop was the remote Saline Valley which is part of the national park located about 50 miles northwest of the main valley. There is an airstrip called the Chicken Strip out there right next to the wonderful Saline Valley Hot Springs.
These hot springs are really unique and you don't expect this little slice of heaven in the middle of nowhere. There are multiple pools that are filled with hot clean running water. I'm very thankful to the people that keep up the area and make it so nice for everyone. Even though it is part of the National Park, the Park Service has allowed people to create cool rock sculptures and other artistic expressions that are appreciated by all who have the fortune to visit.
I spent the night under the wing but didn't sleep very well because I was awakened by a burro donkey that kept wandering around and making a horrible moaning sound. I wasn't familiar with burros at the time so I was pretty freaked out. Thirty yards away in the moonlight it looked like a donkey with horns and I couldn't figure out what the hell it was. I made it through the night though and then had to fend of a pack of coyotes that wanted to eat my breakfast. That's the way it goes in the wild sometimes!

I'm watching this again almost a year later and it's still an epic backcountry flying video...

Thanks for the sexy pictures of your absolutely badass plane. I think my favorite part of the video was hearing your perfectly tuned engine on landing and takeoff. Great video, and great little excursion, you're livin righteously!

M7, I keep coming back to your vid for inspiration. High definition? Check. Low over the valley? Check. Great destination? Check. Great accompanying music? Check. Questionable sleeping arrangements? Check. Yesterday, I did four legs from El Paso to Oakland in a POS classic 737. Keep posting!!!

What airline are you flying for? I want to do more I'm so busy these days and videos take time not to mention my computer is out of space. Working on it though . . .

Great aircraft for exploring, light weight tail dragger. This used to be BLM, outside of the Monument border, added when upgraded to National Park. Charles Manson's group are said to have helped form the concrete basins. It is a much different trip with an old Toyota FJ-55. Thank you for sharing.

That's amazing about Charles Manson - at least they did something good!

Heard Manson and his followers would visit but never heard about them helping create the pools.

That plane sure looks like it's made for rough fields, certainly the tires are much wider than normal AC of the type. Could this land in sand like on a beach?

Pardon my ignorance. What was the white stuff on the ground? Snow salt or sand?

Bishop - need to fill up full here because after Saline I went to Death Valley (no gas) and there isn't gas for miles around in my direction of travel.

Balls of steal my friend for landing at a semi-illegal airstrip. Especially with A10 Warthogs buzzing the area on the daily.
