Hey John! This is Luiz from Brazil. After watched 8 from your IC-M802 instruction videos, now I realized you produced them more than 10 years ago! And I am very happy they are still here, because I learned a lot from them. Thank you very much for investing your time and knowledge on those videos. I am pretty sure they will continue to help many other captains who, like me, were just presented to a M802 and did not know even how to sync a simple frequency... Again, thanks!

Sorry Capt. John, I'm not clear on something from the video. I understand for continuous monitoring of DSC that a separate antenna is required. However, if I initiate a DSC, will the M802 listen for an ACK on the main receiver or just the dedicated DSC receiver? If the later, then the DSC would be much useful in in an emergency and useless for non-distress modes.
Regarding cancelling after having initiated on all six distress frequencies, it appears to cancel just on the frequency it is currently cancelling on. I suppose that's okay since it didn't get an ACK on the prior channel.

Capt. John, Thank you very very much for this clear presentation. Semi-related question: Does the AT-140 antenna tuner "auto-tune" before each transmission? I have a M800 and have not yet installed my new M802.

Marshall, the AT-140, like ALL Icom tuners made in the past 25+ years, will perform a "tune" only when instructed to do so by the radio....Using the M-802, you can program the M-802 to either only perform a "tune" when you press the TUNE button, OR program it to perform a "tune" each time a transmission occurs on a different freq (so called "auto-tune" function of the M-802)...
It has been 20 years since I used a M-800, but I believe it will do the same as the M-700, M-802, etc. but regardless, the answer is NO, the AT-140 only tunes when prompted to do so by the radio...
FYI, questions like this are better posted on SSCA, etc...RUclips is NOT the place fora long discussion!
    Fair winds!
    John

This demo of Distress alerts is fine. Could you show us, how to make an intership DSC call and the watch-keeping related to routine traffic. Regards, L. Mercz

      Laszlo,
Please see my newest series of videos, where the HF-DSC system is completely explained and where you'll see a Live Demonstration of various HF-DSC calls.

John your videos on the m802 are very helpful, I am a ham radio operator AB9EW amateur extra and a ham since January 21st 1997 back when I was 16 and a half and a freshman in high school are you a ham? How long have you been a ham I love SSB ham aero SSB long range and marine SSB long range and vhf USA and international channel monitoring, the reason why we don't use the 160-161 B side of vhf international duplex channels here in the USA is because since 1945 the railroads in the USA and Canada have used 160.215 MHz to 161.565 MHz 15 kHz spacing between channels as railroad channels, and like the railroads they use simplex communications and not many repeaters and the marine vhf spacing in the USA between channels is 50 kHz some 25 kHz mainly channels 156.775 and 156.825 both limited to 1 watt. The rest of the world uses 25 kHz channel spacing and no A channel designation boat recives 160-161 MHz from coast station and transmits 156-157 MHz 4.6 MHz lower on A side channels and recives the B side of coadt stations outside of the U.S. And Canada I live two way radio communications hope I didn't bore you john just passionate about these this topic

I wonder if there is a way I could down load this video so I could have it aboard for crew briefings?

      Bill,
I use save from net, to download and save youtube videos.

Also, please don't forget to have a look at the various Playlists I assembled, where the videos are complied in a more logical order, allowing you to view them in a more understandable way.
