    In this video, I'm comparing the UltraVoice XM8500 directly with the Shure SM58. The Behringer mic is a really cheap option by comparison and when you watch this video, you will probably be very surprised at how it sounds. Both are built like tanks and sound great.
    As a comparison for both mics, I introduced the video on another, bigger dynamic mic so that there was a good 'level setter', the Electro-Voice RE320. That one is a great high quality dynamic and one that I often use because it works well in less than ideal environments.
    So the SM58 and XM8500 are pitted right up against each other and the surprising thing is that the XM8500 costs around a 1/4 to 1/5th of the Shure!!

    This is a cracker of a mic at a ridiculously low price. Well worth having one.

    Well now we need a Behringer SL75 Review versus the Shure SM57 (& T Bone MB75) 😊 Would love to see that

      I have an sm57 clone mic on the way from Stagg.
      Beyerdynamic on the way! Local shop has one.

    Very rich sounding mic, especially at that price point. Too bad you didn't publish this video last night, I literally just placed an order for a Samson CO2 on Amazon. Ah well, I'll add it with the next order I suppose 😂 and I'll make sure to use your link 👍

      Thank you Mr Web. I have been getting a little down about low views recently and you cheered me up! Beginning to think I must be dead boring.
      The XM8500 is a real bargain and the sound you get for that money is extraordinary tbh.

      @@iancraig You're not at all boring Ian. Love your content 👍 To be honest, lots of creators are experiencing low view count these days. I've seen channels with 250K+ subs barely getting 2K views even after a couple of weeks being published. Something's up with the algorithm... 🤔

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  3 года назад

      Funny you mentioned the algorithm. I was just talking to my wife about views and how I was thinking of going AWOL, and she mentioned the visibility too. I’ve been doing a look back and views just seem to have dropped a bit, so I was assuming I must be boring or something tbh. I know I can be a bit dry. Must be my age!!
      Actually, I think my wife is more interested in my viewing figures than me. It was her that brought it up!

    Great Review Ian, I need this very mic and i bet it will work well with my Q502 mixer.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  3 года назад

      It works really well with xenyx preamps. In fact, they're a really good quality preamp; especially at that price. So you're definitely good to go with the Q592. I use the 802 along with a Tascam dr70 or 60d. Both work well with it.
      This mic is a real bargain.

  • @artjohnson01

    I won’t argue with your observations at all. However, my contention is that the SM58 is a mic that has been proven for what?, 50 years, and has been a standard for many, many singers and speakers of note. It is incredibly reliable and durable. I’ve seen these mics thrown around, banged around in supply boxes, etc. they “take a beating and keep on ticking”. I’ll pay a few bucks for a mic that I KNOW will do the job, and has a reputation for it. I don’t want to be the guy that has a speaker tell me, “I’m not going to use this! Where’s the SM58?”

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  2 года назад +1

      You’d better stick with the sm58 then if the speakers get weird about a microphone.
      If it was for a speaker, I'd use the sm57 though personally.

    I've really enjoyed this review. You are such a nice guy. I have a question to ask. Is the sensitivity of the XM8500 50 db or 70db. I'll be grateful if you make it clear to me.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Mohamed. The sensitivity of the microphone is a little bit confusing because I know that the site says it’s 70 dB. In fact it’s more likely to be 50 I think because my experience with it shows that it’s as loud if not louder than the SM 58 therefore I think what they printed on the Behringer the site is actually incorrect.

    Great comparison, Ian, thanks. Have you ever compared a fethead to cloudlifter?

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  3 года назад

      No, I haven’t Dan. Would love to though. I only use the Fetheads because they’re small and can sit direct on the mic. They are great for cheap, noisy amps but don’t really do a lot with quiet preamps.
      I didn’t use one for this video. I went straight into a Tascam dr70 recorder. That’s because the Tascam wasn’t at the top of its range and it’s pretty quiet.

    Hello there Ian,i love your review of the mic! I got it too just recently but i don't have any cable / nor sound card to connect it to. So therefore a question :
    Would a basic XLR to USB cable suffice for the most basic use of the XM8500?

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  2 года назад

      Unfortunately, no. In order to use a usb lead into a computer, you need a usb interface. This isn’t a usb mic. It’s designed as a stage/studio mic and so won’t work directly into a computer via usb.

      @@iancraig Thank you soo much for the recommendations and a quick response ! Much appreciated !! If i opt for the Scarlet Solo , what else do i need to get with it? I'm assuming just a XLR to XLR cable?

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  2 года назад +1

      I think you would need just a lead for your mic. As you say, xlr to xlr. The Solo probably comes with a lead that goes to computer. It's a great way to go if you want to use usb since it allows you to use any mic rather than be tied to just USB mics.
      I never use the computer for recording but the Solo is a good interface in its own right.

    Have a XM8500 data sheet says 150 ohm but manufacturers label on my capsule states
    250 ohm and when measured its 232ohm. Yep its a decent mic for little money.
    Regarding view counts, tons of manipulation going on Ian , everyone are affected these days!

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  3 года назад

      Yes, the impedance thing puzzled me. I saw varying figures as well. In the end, I think I just went with a manufacturer one. The sensitivity thing showed though. The xm8500 is louder due to it being more sensitive and possible impedance differences. Xm8500 is a really surprising mic; especially now I’ve ‘revisited’ it. I quite like it.
      The view counts recently have been very odd for me. In fact, it had me wondering just how boring I must be!! It’s quite tough because these things don’t take five minutes to make and when you see only 50 people in the world watched something, it’s very disheartening. It makes you question yourself and the you start asking yourself why are you making them? Oh well, I guess, just keep going ..... ; )

      @@iancraig Well, the problem perhaps is that so
      much gear are already tested so newer folks on the arena has to figure out
      their particular niche/way somehow , example your and Soundspeeds test
      of the SC400 was instrumental that i bought one as i was not aware of the
      Tbone brand and its quality v.s price point compared to other brands.
      Its tricky i know , but heeey, one day later you have gone from 50 to 125 views! ;-)

      PS: transformer less dynamics the impedance changes over its Bw also length
      of cable and the actual impedance and design of the preamp plays a role of the
      whole sonic painting.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  3 года назад

      Yes, I was more into the mic than the rest I guess. Actually, I would prefer a zip up bag since it’s a dynamic tbh. I often stuff one in my pocket when I’m out videoing with a short Micbooster lead which has a built in preamp in the plug. This one is fantastic for that because it has such a gutsy sound and sounds great outdoors.
      I have a couple of Behringer pencil mics that are also really good value for money. Actually there’s another German based company that is excellent as well at the lower end ... the T.Bone mics. Brilliant.
