    2000 was the end of a magical era...
    ...and 2001 was the start of a totally forgettable one.

    you dont get racing like this anymore. The Super Touring era was the most glamorous! although you do get some great racing these days

    Menu then reappeared with Vauxhall at thruxton during the final round of the 2007 championship which was his one off appearance and he came back again in 2014 where he finished twice on the podium with the VW car

    Menu didn’t stay in the btcc to defend his title for 2001 because he went over to race in the DTM race

    Wow. What a great pair of races to finish the Supertouring era. Feel really sorry for Reid getting punted off like that. And to Rydell as well, for not even making it to the start. Cruel luck. Although over the course of the season, I think Menu did deserve the title though.

      The end of a magical ten years in the BTCC, after Super Touring it was never quite the same again. Although it's true that Super Touring had become unsustainable by the end the new regulations for 2001 were forgettable

    I wish that the BTCC still used this track configuration at Silverstone. It was way better than either of the present day 'short' configurations. The track would differ slightly between Becketts and Abbey but the old track from Abbey, through Bridge corner and up Brooklands is still more or less intact so in theory, it wouldn't be a massive project to reinstate this layout.
    I am a huge fan of Silverstone and the BTCC but I do find the national circuit to be one of the most boring tracks on the calender (the international circuit configuration is equally dull so that wouldn't be much better). The full grand prix circuit is amazing but I understand that they are reluctant to use that due to its length which I totally get, but even so, I still believe they could come up with a better 'short' layout than the national or international. They should've kept the bridge corner layout, even if only used for BTCC races.

    43:38 - the championship dream dies, just a couple of laps from the end - if he lets Radermecker through, the 5 points for 6th place still gives him the championship even if Menu holds on to the 2nd place; what a shame :(

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 5 лет назад +2

      The problem with that was that Radermecker was such a loose cannon that if Reidy had let him through he still couldn't be sure that Vincent wouldn't have taken him out on the way past. He really was the wrecking ball of the BTCC in that period...

    • @91debaser
      @91debaser 5 лет назад +4

      Actually, no, because only the 20 best results achieved by each driver counted towards the championship. Reid needed to finish 4th or better to win the title.

    • @classicsportclassictiyl8547
      @classicsportclassictiyl8547 2 года назад

      but to be fair I think John Watson summed it up in commentary Reidy played it cautious got caught in the midfield mayhem in both races and it cost him with the Tarquini incident in the first race and the Radermecker incident in the second

      Those Ford drivers drove way too carefully. Ironically, that actually got them in trouble all the time.

      @@91debaser Went back and had a look, you are right. Was only going to add points by scoring 6+ in a race; ironically, he would have won the title if he straight up skipped the Croft feature race, instead of being stuck with the zero from being disqualified 🏴
