Ardupilot Update APM Firmware, Compass Calibration, Battery Voltage, Airspeed XUAV Mini Talon Part 6

  • In this video we update the APM Firmware for the Ardupilot Mega 2.6 / HobbyKing HKPilot 2.7 then we connect the GPS Compass module and do a Compass Calibration. After connecting the GPS Compass module I found out that the External Compass Jumper has to be removed for the external compass to work. See Modified Wiring Diagram link below.
    Next we Setup the 3DR Power Module and Configure Battery Monitoring for Voltage and Current readings on the MinimOSD.
    We also do the Accelerometer Calibration, Calibrate Auto Level and then do the RC Radio Calibration. We finish by connecting and enabling the Airspeed Sensor.
    At the end I give a brief update on my two left wings issue.

    LED: Behavior:
    Power On when powered

    *B (yellow)* Only flashes along with A and B during calibration or as part of the in-flight auto trim feature

    Your videos are wonderful! Well edited, easy to understand... Thank you! I'm working on an Opterra Wing with Pixhawk 2.1 and learning as fast as I can. Quite the challenge to get everything working in harmony. Your OSD video totally helped me too. I hope you end up with a 2.1 Pixhawk and make some more vids!       In the early days of the APM it was not good practice to connect both but now it has become the normal way.

    I’m using PixHawk 2.4.8 for rover I’m facing some problems flashing green light after pressing safety switch and i found gps locked but pixhawk disarmed i want convert into solid green light how can solve my problem plz guide me??

    Hey, when I'm trying to do radio calibration there is no response and the green bars don't move, nd I have to bind each time I power the quad

    I keep getting bad compass health and it drove me nuts and I bought a new apm 2.6 and still won't calibrate successfully!!! I have an external compass as well (although it says it has an internal one built in) but I need to use a jumper wire to use it?

      Go to full parameter list and then save them before updating. Load them afterward.

    When in manual mode, the radio input is the same as the same servo output and this is true, but when in stabilize mode the radio input is not the same as the servo output. Unfortunately this question already was (you did not answer). Manual configuration of the controller is not a difficult task. The algorithm is not clear - how the flight controller works in stabilization mode. This is a very important point. The rest of the video is an overview ...

    When setting up the model on the Taranis, do you set it up as a simply 4 channel or do you select the V-Tail option?

      I just have the 4 channels AETR in my Taranis. The V-Tail setup is all in the APM otherwise the stabilization would not work right.

    Great clip Dave, the Batt Monitor was useful to me...Im having trouble saving my Parameter set to my Laptop for my specific model, it goes through the motions but there is no file saved...:(..... Hope to see you cover this in the next Video...Thanks for your efforts from the UK...:)...BTW....If you rotate the GPS puck a little slower, you will be able to get 2,000 markers making it more accurate.

      Thanks. I am also doing the same to the APM Pro Mini and so far it is behaving the same way as the HKpilot. However I think the APM Pro Mini may have a better GPS unit but time will tell as usual.

    Pixhawk Spektrum ar8010t not binding in mission planner to Dx8e
    I recently got into a person hobby of making drones do things. I had a parrot AR drone working fine with a raspberry pi but i wanted to make my own due to being able to add anything to one. I have posted a picture of what is going on with my drone in mission planner and the wiring of the drone. I have tried to wire the dsmx reciever to the pixhawk but i only get gray bars and no green. when i xonnect to the Ar8010t traditional reciever it gives me what shows in the picture. I am a newb and by no means a seasoned pro, I am just the first one at my university to want to get into drones and none of the teachers have a clue how to help me.       Yes I think so. But you can back up the parameters in the advanced parameters and try to load them into the new firmware.

    @dave merc, I am having issues with the external compass. I am able to perform the calibration, it states it successfully captured the data points, but then nothing happens. When I go to the Flight data screen, GPS information just sits at 0. Any help appreciated.

      The compass will not give you GPS coordinates only direction. You need to have enough sats to see GPS information show up.
      Try it outside.

      @Dave Merc Productions, Okay, set it outside and left it for about 15 minutes. No change. Both the GPS HDOP and GSP Sats indicate 0. Not really sure what I have done incorrectly. Audrucopter v2.8 and Neo 6M. I have removed jumper. All I get is a red LED on the module and flashing LEDs on the APM. I have popped the cover off both the module and APM to confirm no broken solder joints; all looks good. Not sure what to try next, although I am confident I am missing some simple step.

      I wonder if the TX and RX wires are connected right. From the GPS TX should got to RX
      and RX should go to TX. Usually this not a problem but once a found wires reversed on the plug.
      Do you have another GPS unit you can try in case the one you have is bad?

      I've taken the case off and verified all the pin outs. I have another GPS ordered, just has not arrived yet. It may be a faulty GPS, but I am knew to this and I can''t help to think that I am missing something simple.

      On the flight data tab in mission planar what does it show? GPS:No GPS or GPS:GPS FIX.
      It should get a fix if it's hooked up right and calibration is done. Do you get any other error messages such as GPS or Mag errors?

    Hi. your videos are amazing. i have followed all the instructions correctly and everything is ok but my quadcopter is arming only when it is connected to computer with USB cable and lipo battery and it is not arming when not connected to the laptop. what might be the issue? I am using APM 2.5 with flysky remote controller and readytosky 920 kv motors with 1045 propellers and 3000 mAH battery. kindly help me please sir.

      I think you may be missing the Arm Button which plugs into the unit. However you can get around this by disabling it in the parameters.

      i can't find this in "Full Params List - BRD_SafetyEnable = 0". my quadcopter is arming but only when two power supplies are given. one from lipo and other from LAPTOP through USB connector. still unfigured for me

      Perhaps the the GPS is not getting power or something. Try disabling the arm checks in the Standard Params List. Set all Arm Checks to off and see what happens.

    The version arduplane was 3.7. But after uploading it became 3.4? Why not 3.7

      +Mervyn 8888 Version 3.4 was the latest stable release of the firmware.

      You can do a manual or local install of any version you want.

      After viewing your this video, I was having the same problem like you. Follow like what you were doing . First upload arduplane 3.8. With usb plug in both sides FC and PC but did not click the connected.

      You should use arducopter firmware for a quad but usually people use the PixHawk FC for quads instead of the ArduPilot FC
