But too dumb to crouch down for stability on the ride up. River, the supposed nut, lowers her center of gravity. And as for one of them being a badass, I have one word for you: "Miranda."
This opening going from logos to a summary that's a holographic lesson inside a program inside archived footage is always so impressive, and then the one-shot from the cockpit to the cargo bay of top of that...one of the best movie openings ever, no question
One of the best opening sequences that I’ve seen in a sci-fi film. A ton of exposition but also you get how dramatic this escape really was. Simon had some big turnips to pull this off.

Wow, the “ we not telling people what to think, we’re just trying to show them how” has never felt more real than in 2021. I definitely would have been a citizen of the outer planets.

Slight retcon here -- if I recall right, originally Simon just intercepted River's delivery when she was being packaged off to God knows where; he didn't storm the base and rescue her himself. I guess they made that change to quickly get new audience members up to speed.
Simon was very obtuse about the whole thing in the Pilot episode; I figure he was much too nervous and distrustful of the crew at the time to give any more information than was strictly necessary, especially since - as show here - his overt participation in the rescue made him easier for the Alliance to target.
Whedon acknowledged this. I believe he said he retconned it because we'd be way more invested watching Simon save River in a dramatic scene than having a bunch of random people deliver her to him. Think he said this in his commentary.
I heard a great theory on reddit (credit to u/TheYLD) that the flashback of River's escape in the movie actually occurs AFTER the show. Basically, the Hands captured River sometime after the show, she gets rescued from the Academy a second time, and then the film takes place 8 months after that. The person went into way more detail than I can about how this wouldn't contradict anything and actually improves the timeline by giving more time between the series and film for the books and comics to take place. It also clears up the continuity error of Simon saying in the show that he paid people off to rescue her. He paid people off the first time. The second time, he went in personally.
My favorite moment is when Simon says "Yes, she always did love to dance," the scientist gives him a weird look just before he knocks them all unconscious.
In Firefly, Simon seems to be clueless re what they wanted River for, and chocked at the idea that she was trained to be a weapon, but in this scene he was basically told that was the case. Small inconsistency.
The tail end here is quite telling. River is the nutcase, but she's got the training and presence of mind to crouch down, lowering her center of gravity for more stability, while her fancy doctor brother just stands there, making everything less stable.
He's holding one of the guidewires. Seems pretty stable. And it's a small platform, so it makes sense for one to crouch. Also - and this is the most important bit - it's to achieve a nicely framed shot with narrative significance, to show him watching over her as she crouches. She's not exactly cowering, but she's scared and broken.
@@DaveDexterMusic 1. No, it's dumb to stand like that. You have to think beyond just him being secure. It throws off the whole platform. 2. Plenty of room for both to crouch. 3. Never said she was cowering. Emotional element is there, but she just demonstrated superb training, so that's part of it. Agreed about the narrative shot. My point still stands.

Simon is a goofy, kind of wimpy nerd - unless his sister is in danger, the all of his self doubt disappears and he gets to work

@@TommygunNG um, ok. If you asked River who the most badass person in the universe was, I'd put good money on her answer being Simon
No, not at all. It’s not that she’s not grateful for what he did, but “badass” would not be the term she would use.

Certainly not, but underrated for sure.
The fact Simon didn't freak out here seeing his sister tortured right in front of his eyes is just crazy.
He is a man of focus, commitment and sheer fucking will.
He knew she was being hurt from her secret messages to him, he probably emotionally prepared himself for this for months.
