    I just got my tenere. Its my first motorcycle, and even though these videos are probably super basic for you, its such a relief to find them, and see how its all done. Thanks for making them!

    Check the book on the tenere I’m sure it has the measurement taken from the end of the rubber block to the centre of the chain while the bike is on the side stand.

      I think we are talking about the same piece on the swingarm, the drive chain guide; i.e. plastic/rubber slider.

    • @1jonblaze
      @1jonblaze 3 года назад +5

      @@orbsurfer8195 yeah that’s right bro we are taking the measurement from the same part but the measurement is to the centre of the chain while the bike is on the side stand not the Centre stand. The side stand allows the rear wheel to be on the ground and the centre stand the rear wheel is off the ground. I’m not sure if this has an affect on the adjustment of the chain. Please don’t think I’m being rude towards your video. I enjoy your videos. Have a good day

      @@1jonblaze You are correct, it is to the center or the chain, and the book states side stand.

    I have mineral oil in a spray bottle to clean my chain. More control of the spray and less waste. Cheap.
    ‘O’ and ‘X’ ring chains technically only need cleaning. The lubricant is sealed inside the rollers for the life of the chain, unless, like you said you clean with a solvent. Those can penetrate the internal lubrication of the chain. Mineral oil does not penetrate. Motor oil does not penetrate. WD-40 is a lubricant not a cleaner. It does not penetrate.

    Go the other direction so there is no chance to get your finger mashed in the rear sprocket (don't ask me how I would know this)

    Skönt med kardandrift!
    Nu dock bytte jag in min super Tenere mot en T7a. Så tillbaka till framtiden igen och börja med underhåll av kedja.
    Ha det fint / Ola 🇸🇪

    Thanks, I'm a new owner of a T7 new to mechanics and want to learn to adjust chain and change the oil more often than recommended since here in Madrid summers are 40° and the bike runs so hot the cooling fans are always on so it's worth to put new oil prior to crazy summer heat. Also I ordered a chain guide to put under the chain to prevent chain to go out if hiting something, I hear is noisy though, do you recommend? Thanks for the lessons.

      @orbsurfer8195  3 года назад

      I have not tried the guide, i.e. I do not know, but if the guide is rubbing against the chain, that will generate noise.

    A tip from Bret Tkacs - emergency chain cleaning/lubrication on the road? Use diesel

  • @macmclemore
    @macmclemore 3 года назад

    According to the chain manufacturers, there is really not much gained from lubricating a sealed O-Ring chain. The oil will never reach where it is needed most… the rollers and pins. Any extra lubricant left behind will only attract dirt. Cleaning the chain is a worthwhile endeavor… as long as the cleaners you use do no damage to the o-rings. Be careful. Do not use contact cleaner.

    Nou forget the most important part . To take away the protection at the front sprocket and clean it as dirt is together there. Your clean chain will be hitting the dirt .

    How do you keep that rear wheel so loose and easy to spin? Are your brake pads old and have a good gap ? Thank you

    • @orbsurfer8195
      @orbsurfer8195  2 года назад

      The wheel has been spinning freely with both old and new rear brake pads. In theory the rear disc should create a tiny gap when the wheel is turning, because the disc will never be 100% flat.

    I Bought a slightly used bike 2900km, chain was a mess, he had only lubed it (wax spray type).
    Took be a good 2 h to get it sort of clean, I also used your method, but I had to hang the chain down in a small tub with oil (so I could scrub it).
    Btw, are you Scandinavian living in the US? ;)

      The chain is probably the most overlooked part on the bike! :-) Norway!

    ONe note the measurement in the manual is to the center of chain and not top of chain.

    Would WD40 also be suitable for cleaning?

    • @orbsurfer8195
      @orbsurfer8195  3 года назад +2

      WD is a thin oil, so it should be suitable. I am just very leery of any cleaner that removes all the oil; a degreaser.

    Lift rear wheel , clean chain with a rag , apply gear oil to chain ! That didn`t take 16 minutes to explain !
