  • In July 2023, the Greek holiday island of Rhodes was the scene of devastating wildfires. Thousands of residents and tourists were brought to safety in the biggest evacuation operation in the nation's history. DW's Lukas Stege shows you how things are looking on Rhodes several weeks after the catastrophe. He talks to both locals and tourists and everyone agrees: for this island, which is so dependent on tourism, the best thing for everyone is if visitors return home as soon as possible.

85% of all wild fires are the result of human behavior, meaning they were set on fire, intentionally or by accident. I know it is modern to blame everything on climate change, but please try to be honest. The Greek interior ministry reported these numbers not too long ago, so why don't you ?
There is also a big difference in how the islands tackle wild fires. On the island of Corfu you will find pre-positioned fire fighters throughout the whole season. They are able to immediately spring into action when a fire is detected and thus are able to contain the fire before it gets out of control. Good example was the fire this year on Corfu, it was extinguished within 24 hours. Last year it was the identical situation.
Rhodes does not have this approach and thus fires can get out of control. Rhodes lies in the Aegean which is known for the very strong Meltemi winds during the summer. If there is one thing you don't want it is fire and strong winds, that is a recipe for disaster.
So this local guy was right, something needs to be changed on Rhodes. They should clean up the forests and make sure they have pre-positioned fire fighters during the season. And on top of that it would be nice to actively go after the people who cause fires or even set nature on fire on purpose. Most of the times it are actually the fire fighters themselves who do that. They only get paid once there is a fire, so when fires are absent they get very tempted to cause a fire. That way they at least get paid. Solution ? Just pay them during the season. Surely 2.5 million tourists can pay the salaries of these fire fighters through a simple tax system.

Great video Lukas I do think you are right in stating wild fires will keep happening, so I must say I would visit northern European countries otherwise you may find your holiday gets cancelled if the destination is on fire in a southern area of Europe
