For all who enjoy and follow RE Nunez on his history of Pomona. I just wanted to share with you all. R E Nunez passed away. I thinking at the end of December 2023. I just heard this sad news about 4 days ago. He lived on W Second St near Oak. I think he might of passed in his sleep. He will be missed and was a nice person. Much prayers for his family. Rip Richard and thank you.
Wow that's really great, I remember Woolworths store with my mom and my little sister my mom used to shop there. And next door West of it was Thrifty's drugstore, and across from Thrifty's there was a man shoe store called LeMans, and towards the side of the street on Park was a pool hall I think it was called the dungeon you would walk down stairs to it. And there was also a store called buffums, and the Round the Corner South of the mall , there was the United Artists Theater , and also the Fox Theater, which both still exists To This Day 2020. I thank you for sharing this this video was from 5 years ago so yeah I thank you
I had a job at the Yesteryears Club on 2nd street in 2001 and was told that building was the old Montgomery Wards.Has a downstairs and skylights and hardwood floors throughout.
I use to rent out the basement of the old Kress building in downtown Pomona in the late 70s earl 80s for rehearsal space for my old punk band. Good times.
Back in 1974 when I was working for the city of Pomona, I ate lunch on the last day the Kress was going to be open. Ate at the counter they had there on the east wall, so you faced the wall. When I go in today, I try to look for anything left from those days like the small floor sinks they use to use for a drain. They also you to have a back door on Locust St. but they sealed it off, because people we're walking out with stuff without paying. Today you can still see the out line of the door.
@@RENunez-sd6ov I saw some pictures recently and you are right. that side door isn't there anymore. The basement was so big you could have used it for a parking lot. We ended up sectioning a space just big enough for our equipment and some sofas and chairs to sit on. lots of jamming down there, and lots of partying too.
I remember well the Montgomery Ward Store in Pomona on 2nd Street. It had a basement with fine hardwood flooring throughout. The store was a full retail store, much like a mini-Sears store. One particular memory I treasure occurred about this time of year and, I believe, 1949. There was a lot of action on the "Rudolf The Red-Nosed Reindeer" story and Gene Autry had just released his career-making and still-famous rendition of the story put to song. The memory took place just after dark...people used to go "Window Shopping" and downtown Pomona was just the ideal place to be. My dad and I got wind that there were free copies of the Rudolf story, originally written in 1939 by Robert L. May, an ad man at Montgomery Ward. The stack of free booklets was just at the bottom and to the right of the stairs down to the basement shopping area. The cover had fuzzy material glued onto the nose. I can't be sure but there may have been glow in the dark material on the cover, too. In any case I just loved my copy and the song. As we exited the store that night the sidewalks had been covered with white paper from large rolls to promote the March of Dimes (then for prevention of infantile paralysis, polio). People were encouraged to place dimes on the paper and sweepers collected the dimes. I loved the sight. As a footnote, in later years my mother was employed as a night auditor in the office at Gene Autry's hotel in Palm Springs, California. "Mr. Autry," as she always referred to him, "was a very kind, friendly and gracious person and always said hello when he passed through the hotel."
The memory I just posted on the Montgomery Ward Store was the store in the building that is still there, south west corner of Second and Gordon, now with address 406 2nd Street. By the way, I am looking for the precise location of the store building in which my grandfather, Henry Wilson Banta (b. 3 Jan 1867, d. 6 Oct 1927) owned and operated a grocery store on west 2nd Street. He came to Pomona with his family to Pomona in 1917. The store was his sometime between his arrival and when he suddenly passed away.
In '83 I joined the ranks of the old Pomona Sears where the indoor swap meet now stands. When you found yourself in need of a Water Heater, Air Conditioner, Washer and Dryer, as well as other home improvement services, you would find it on display, we'd write it up, and if you needed it installed, we'd tally it up, and if the price was satisfactory, Sears Service Techs would get it done. If you could fit it in your car, and you liked to save a little money on delivery and installation, you would drive your vehicle around back to the Warehouse. We had it all, and if we didn't, the Sears Service center would order the parts or even repair your product. It was an old store, but the 80's was a robust time, and by '86, the new Sears was built and we all moved to the Montclair Plaza. Vcr's were just coming out, lazer disc's, and by 1985, Compact Disc's (and Disc Players) were introduced. Reagan was in office and it was hip to be square. And last but not least, the Popcorn girl would be popping the corn, selling the candy, and serving the icees. A great store full of great memories.
Sergio Osório have you found any hidden doors? I love old houses. I will pass by your house next time I head down the hill. I grew up by dudley and Holt
Sergio Osório what year did you buy the home? What else did you find???? Tell meeee. I try to look for old pictures of your home but had no luck. Usually zillow will be my friend but this time it didn’t have any, not even the front yard.
@@lupitaromanhuerta5966 I got the keys on the 31st of October 2013. Lupita, the attic was a time capsule! I found a handyman's improvised tool tray, kitchen items that were pure silver Lupita, tin full of old quarters that were also silver and I framed 2 newspaper pages I thought looked cool. I believe that what I found was from 1921, because that is was the newspapers were dated.
There is use to be a bus station on the northeast corner of 4th and Garey Ave. it was also the old P&E Trolley Station where they use to park them on the Garey and Mission where the Bank of America is today. Then later at the train station on W. Commercial where it is today. Inside the station back when I was a kid, they use to have a small café on the eastside, with a great pinball machine, those were good times.
Do some research on the old volcano that used to be on elephant hill as you drive up on holt before you reach temple and the townhouses apartments your in the mouth of the volcano
Downtown Pomona (architectural buildings) was already here when we arrived. We "founded" them meaning we found them and repurposed them. Show me unmanipulated construction photos. I'm takking about the old brick buildings. I went to Pomona First Baptist school located on Holt & Gary which has now been torn down. The basement was actually the first floor but was buried by dirt & mud over time. These buildings have been here for hundreds of years. Thats why you see half buried windows on ground level. Nobody is going to take the time dig out all that dirt to make a basement IN CALIFORNIA. For what purpose. That's stupid. #TarTaria #MudFlood

Exploring and local history is fun
Hello, yes it is, I've been having a great time sharing the history of our great city. Thanks for viewing.
That Montgomery Ward building could have been a distribution center for their products, but not an actual store??
Bunny Gunner I saw that in Claremont before
What did the indoor swap meet used to be?? I heard there used to be a pool somewhere.
I was told it was a Sears.
CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHEN WAS THE BOOM IN THE CITY OF POMONA AND HOW WAS THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN L.A. AND POMONA?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO.
A LITTLE HISTORY OF OLD POMONA.
The indoor swapmeet was a 2 story Sears. It had an escalator in there. The Sears moved to the Montclair Plaza.
