It's good that I know how to do all this. Remember most people watching these videos have no clue of what you are doing. It would help to let them know what you are hooking up to on both side. Example... from main out xlr to line in on mixer. from what output on mixer to what input on next device be it a speaker or an amplifier etc......
@DJHuckmonkey Then route the signal from the basic mixer into an effects unit (Delay, Echo, Reverb, Pitch control, Auto warp long sample, Convolution Reverb, Compressor, Desser, Hi pass, Low pass filters ) add in a Novation Launchpad on one channel running through Ableton in session view, a Push III and a Maschine Mk III, only I am using an Allen and Heath QU 16
Great piece of advice! Its the best way to go!! i would also add that most budget dj controller lack of the Booth out, so you also solve this problem just plugging from the Mixer auxiliary out or phone out to the monitors and you have a complete control of the monitoring volume. Greetings from Chile mate, Hooray! I just couldn’t be happier for your channel going up!!
If you doing gigs then yes a mixer is a good upgrade. I want to try route the DDJ200 to a mixer with USB input then use asio on laptop to give me 2 separate channels for headphones and output.
Thank you for this video. In my opinion it would have been better if you would have recorded the video from your seating position, it would make the inputs more visible.
Nice Tip :) It's really nice to adjust the bass with an external mixer. Once i did a little gig with selfmade speakers from the owner. They had pressure but they were not balanced very well (to much highs/mids and a little less bass). My DDJ-1000 does not have the option to make master EQ adjusts. So this would have been the perfekt solution :)
Hey oodoo, I know you like the cinematic stuff. I just started a new channel where I can be more creative without the constraint of the DJ niche. This is where I'll post my more creative stuff. ruclips.net/channel/UCpwz58xa6cTQdq0pLIYMroQ
Thank you! My English language is not good and i need to ask something because im using flx4. If i buy some mixer, is it possible to use effect pedals on it? I looking for way to use effect pedals with my flx4.
On another note I have the MG10 mixer and was wondering why don't they have mid-range adjustments on Ch. 5/6, 7/8 and 9/10..? Also can I use 1/4-in heavy duty speaker cables to my powered speakers instead of XLR..?
Thanks for the great video. If I am using the XLR outs from my controller, would I plug them in to channel 1, and 2 on the external mixer? So one channel would control left speaker volume and other right speaker? Thanks for your time.
I have the DFJ-FLX4. I bought a large Sony speaker XP700. Has Bluetooth and RCAs. I want to land some retail DJ gigs like Nordstrom, Macys, shopping malls etc… Would you recommend just add a mixer like this Yamaha to get XLRs or is it better just buy a more professional controller like Pioneer Rev 5 or Mixstream ProGo or Denon Prime Go that includes XLR?
Adding the Yamaha MG06x to the FLX-4 and using XLR cables will give extra headroom and more sound volume than otherwise just connecting the FLX-4 directly to the speaker. Or alternatively if you have plenty of extra dollars then upgrade to a professional level DJ controller.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for this. I'm trying to get back into DJing but it looks like my Rane 56 and Scratch Live interface is out of date now. I want a controller that will still let me us my 56 & 1200s, with Serato. So I'm assuming I can also basically hook up an RCA only controller to my 56 and that will work the same, right?
Great content. My question is , I currently have a DDJ 400 , if I upgrade to the DDJ RX3 which doesn’t support streaming services. Could I still use my phone through my mixer to play requested songs on the fly that may not be on my flash drive.
Thank you so much for this video! Quick question how many speakers can you plug into the mixer? and can you also plug in your Bass (subwoofer) ? thanks again!
but rca to xlr or 1/4 is still unbalanced. without special boxes will this type of set-up cause line hum or feedback? i am getting back into DJing and just got a Numark MT3Pro....it has RCA outputs. :(
I have the ddj flx6 and am curious if the RCA ro 1/4 into the mixer will still create an unbalance audio? And if so, is it possible to even get it balanced without an XLR direct from deck to mixer to speaker?
I would tend to lean toward a controller with xlr outputs. They are usually higher quality controllers. Having said that, a mixer on the side gives you more control over your system, and can always be useful, especially if you DJ weddings. It's also good to have for backup, so if your controller or laptop goes down, you can plug another source such as your phone into the mixer while you sort out the issue. And on top of that, a dedicated mixer will give you better sound quality and control of your mics. The mic preamps in most controllers are usually not very good. So basically, I would recomend a controller with xlr outs, but I would also always recomend a mixer on the side as well, regardless of the controller you choose. This is assuming that you are planning on playing gigs. If just in your home or small parties, then a good controller might be all you need. Hope that helps.
If you can spend 600 i think it's better a controller with xlr output and make sure you also have a booth output with volume control on the mixer of your controller. I think that's already a good options. If you need more mic inputs, that's a different setup and it's up to your needs what kind of option you are going to chose.
The answer I’ve been looking for! Thanks for that. If I want to run mono and daisy chain my speakers (separate areas of the bar), would you suggest RCAs to a single 1/4” in the mixer (Left), then just one XLR (Left) out to Speaker 1? Or, is there a setting/switch on the mixer where I can run stereo out of controller to the mixer, then mono out of the mixer? Thanks!!
Hi Joe, sorry for the late reply. I would set the controller on mono, usually done in the software. Then run both RCA's from the controller to the external mixer. Then both outputs of the mixer will have the same mini sound. Then you can use each output of the external mixer for a different area of you bar, and both will put out the same mono sound. I hope that helps!
Thanks so much I just ordered mines but the 12 mixer and wasn’t sure how to connect everything. New to dj_Ing 2 years in the wiring can be confusing at times (Got color tape).
Hi there. Can you set it up so channel 1 only outputs through L and channel 2 only outputs through R? So if i plug my RX2 direct into channel 1 and 2 and have 1 speaker plugged into the L and 1 plugged into the R i can then change the bass, treble and gains for each speaker independently? Hope that makes sense lol... Thx 👍🏻
Nice video by the way so I have a yamaha mg10xu mixer where should I plug my XLR in because when I plugged into 3/4 channels it was peaking and distorting so should I plug into the UNBALANCED channels?
There will be a channel with quarter inch jack inputs (female holes) on the mixer. You should get a quarter inch jack combination meaning left and right on one end that will have a headphone jack on the other end of the wire. Get the appropriate attachment that will fit on the other end of the wire so it will plug into your phone. That is the ideal back up solution in case anything goes wrong with your controller or computer. It will help you keep the party going while you troubleshoot. In many cases you will only need to plug 1 quarter inch jack in Mono (left hole of the mixer in most cases) since your phone is only providing one signal. Hope this helps.
Hello sir , planning on purchasing a Pioneer XDJ-RX3 mixer , would it be possible to hook this up on my Yamaha Aventage home theater system with a Definitive bi-polar built in subwoofer tower speakers? Thank you in advance for your time
Great video. I currently have the Denon MC6000 MK with a Yamaha MG10XU The Denon has XLR outputs would I need to get XLR to 1/4 to connect to the mixer and use the XLR on the mixer to the speakers. Please let me know when you get a chance thank you so much.
Since that mixer has 4 xlr inputs, you could just run xlr into the mixer, and still have 2 xlr channels left over for mics. Or you can run from RCA out on your denon to quarter inch or RCA in on the mixer, saving your denon's xlrs for subs and fill speakers at large venues. When running a short distance, it doesn't hurt to use RCA's or quarter inch. So really, you have alot of options, just depends on how you want everything to work, and what kind of set ups you plan on running. Hope that helps and makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions. Might be better put into a video.
You're welcome. Glad I could help. After you try it out, if you're still not sure, maybe let me know a little more about your set up, and I'll try to help you narrow down how to set it up.
Good question. Generally, controllers with RCAs only don't put out quite as much power as controllers with XLRs, mostly because controllers with RCAs only are usually not as premium quality as ones with XLRs, so their pre-amps aren't quite as good. The sound quality varies between controllers. But what XLRs will do for you over RCAs, is carry a signal over a greater distance with out degrading sound quality. RCAs are very limited how long they can be without picking up interference. Also, a set up like this with an external mixer will add a bit of headroom to your existing controller. In otherwords, it will give you a bit more clean volume, because it has better pre-amps than a more budget friendly controller. So short answer, it may or may not give you as high of quality sound as a more premium controller with XLRs, but will most definitly give you better sound quality than a more budget friendly controller with RCAs only. Hope that makes sense and helps!
Thank you for your video. When connected to a dj controller, I assume you still control the music volume on the controller. What do you set the main volume on the mixer? Thanks.
Hi Mike, sorry for the late reply. The main thing is that you don't have any of your levels clipping, or red lining. I would set my controller so that it's slightly below clipping (levels just pushing into yellow, not into red). Then set the external mixer level to suit the room/enviroment, and use that to adjust throughout the set if you need more or less volume. Hope that helps, I'm thinking I'll make a video explaining this
Question. I have the same mixer, and go RCA out to Dual 1/4 inch and run in 3/4 and it sounds great. Curious why you're using L(Mono) on both 3/4 and 5/6? Thanks

What kind of RCA to hook up from the controller into Yamaha?
Any RCA will do. But the mixer is 1/4 inch in, so you need RCA to 1/4 inch, or RCA to RCA with 1/4 inch adapter.
All this powered by your laptop??
Yup, the controller basically controlls the dj software, as well as distribute the audio signals.
