  • The long awaited episode on Sum 41's 4th studio record, Chuck. It's was the band's darkest and heaviest record yet and is one of the most beloved releases in the band's discography. But it is truly deserving of all the praise it gets from Sum 41 fans? Let's take a look.

    Biter end is supposed to be a tribute to battery

    I can confirm 88 got its name from the bpm of the Song.
    I got to ask Deryck at a meet and greet about it. :D

    It has been mentioned before by not only the band but news outlets that their sound was similar and Deryck had commented saying that he would be heavily influenced by certain artists and write a riff out and it would come out basically the same lmao
    But when you mentioned the bitter end and your whole tantrum I couldn't stop laughing at how similar it was! Since Sum 41 was the beginning of my punk rock love I couldn't believe it and can't really take anyone bad mouthing them lmao but I love how your points are spot on and even very similar to mine!

    Bitter end is a homage that's why they weren't subtle.

    Got me good with the sudden Frasier ending theme for Slipping Away lmao. Despite quite a few - and justified - appearances of the plagiarist police, this album remains my all-time favourite from Sum's discography; when it comes to finding that sweet spot between their punk rock/pop-punk influences and their metal influences, this record gets it absolutely spot-on.
    88 is SUCH an underrated track too, love all the different sections, the slow verse into the fast chorus, the breakdown/solo and the unsettling ambient bit at the end - it's a great exploration of all Sum's various styles and influences up to this point, one of my favourites not just off this album but off their entire discography

    On the copycat thing, on my first listen I was immediately taken aback by how similar the opening riff in 'Welcome to Hell' is to The Offspring's 'All I Want'.

    Oooh so that's why i love The Bitter End so much, cause it's just Battery by Metallica.
    Well, even with that this is still my favorite album by Sum 41, it has the perfect flow between songs, it's all feel and it has amazing riffs along with exploring more technical guitar playing which i really do enjoy
    No Reason is my absolute favorite song by them and most of the songs that follow are pretty damn great in their own right, and they're all distinct which i feel is very important

I love Chuck and I agree with a lot of what you say here. I can't seem to find your DTLI? video. Was it deleted? It's my favorite Sum 41 album and the reason I wanted to start learning guitar when I was 12, I'm curious about what you had to say about it

    2004. Me as a 14 Years old Teen was watching Godzilla- Final Wars.
    Godzilla fought against the Roland Emmerich Godzilla and a heavy Songs started playing. "We're all to blame"
    The little me thought "Wow, that sounds epic"
    6 years later. The 20 years old me finally had an idea..."I should google them!". Then i found them on RUclips and i bought the Album Chuck.
    Thats how i became a Fan.
    Thanks Godzilla 😄

    I was rewatching Chuck after u just uploaded Pt 1 of Underclass Hero.. I was curious, during Pieces' segment, did you purposely put in an 8-bit version of The Scientist by Coldplay? Since there were many videos on how it was plagiarised hahahaa Just curious if it was intentional or not!

    Call this me possible seething bout your bitter thoughts on The Bitter End, while I'm also doing my Sum-41 experience, I honestly find it very enjoyable if it is a tribute/rip-off, Find it amusing even.
    I definitely get it when listening to The Bitter End, it gets you to feel like you would rather just listen to Battery instead. But I dunno, the comparison-making gets me to giggle everytime because it really is that blatant and make it to be one of the most entertaining I got out of an album that's full of things that surprise you with what the band can do y'know?
    And right as i'm writing this comment, isn't it funny when sharing's fun when it's not your stuff?
    (I don't see it far off of an impossibility that this is the band possibly even hinting that they'd critique Metallica for their greed, in an album full of insightful statements about disappointments and dismay like that)

  • @bryanschultz9311
    @bryanschultz9311 3 месяца назад

    We’re All to Blame having the same heavy verse/soft verse inverse structure as Chop Suey does not equal it ripping off that song.
    I’ll give you The Bitter End, I like the song but have always known it to be a near copy of Battery with some inspiration from Master of Puppets, it’s almost like that was the point.
    I’m Not the One’s bridge vocally sounds similar to A Place For My Head (lyrics and aggression), but nothing else about it sounds remotely similar.
    88 bridge sounding like One is a huge stretch. No band should ever put snares to the same exact rhythm of the chugging palm-muted guitar to avoid any future confusion.
    I guess with these opinions you thought you were being what you thought Chuck wasn’t: original. Such the angsty kid.

    For many People Chuck is their Favorite. And back in the Day (before Screaming Bloody Murder, 13 Voices and Order in Decline) it was also my Favorite.
    But there was always something that bothered me about Chuck.
    It borrows too much from other Bands. It has no own personality.
    And i'm not the biggest Fan of some of the Choruses (like No Reason). It just feels weird to me when a Heavy Song Suddenly....Suddenly ... turns into a fun and Happy Song.
    In my opinion SBM, 13 Voices and OID did a much better Job in having a own personality while still using the style from some other Bands at times.
    Especially SBM is so deep, creative and Emotional. Love it.
    Thats probably why they are my 3 Favorite Albums.

    • @andhedrewbees
      @andhedrewbees  3 года назад +2

      Yeah like I mentioned in the video, Chuck's borrowing from other bands is it's biggest flaw in my eyes.
      However, Chuck's incorperation of punk elements into alternative metal tracks, make it a stylistic preference for me compared to some of the later records like OID.
      But you'll just have to wait for later episodes to know my full opinions on those 2010s Sum 41 records ha.

    lol i can never listen to this the same again...the plagiarism or recycling i most easily recognize is not even mentioned in the review (some say - handle this, pieces - the scientist), i didn't listen to much Linkin park and haven't heard much Metallica for over like 15 years, and the chorus of we're all to blame sounds identical to chop suey.. still a great album lol

    • @kevinjacob8947
      @kevinjacob8947 2 года назад

      Also I hear a lot of Still Waiting in the progression and other elements of Subject to Change (obviously the re-used the chorus for Underclass Hero but I don't really count that b c this was not an official release) - ironically the bonus tracks are some of my favorite including this song

    • @sumspring4112
      @sumspring4112 Год назад

      To be fair, the album is meant to be a tribute to those types of bands, so...
      I get calling it plagiarism, but they're more or less just trying to show their love for Metallica and bands like that.
