First verse is a childhood perspective (written by luke). Second is from his co writer who wanted a tribute to his son in the military. And third is of a father passing. Kind of a full life story of father and child.
can you ask him if he could sing even though I'm leaving at his next concert as a tribute to my dad who passed away to cancer just 6 years ago 5 days after Christmas. please. if he agrees please tell him my dad's name was Roger . thanks
@billyYouSoCrazy, it’s not just about the troops, the third verse was his dad dying and he didn’t wanna say goodbye. The first verse was as a child, second verse he was leaving for the military and third was his dad leaving.
Olivia B the first verse was when he was a child and was scared of the dark. His dad told him he’ll always be there with him even if he’s not physically there, so don’t be afraid of the dark. 2nd verse was when the individual was in the military and was getting ready to deploy. He was telling his dad he’s nervous about the deployment (churning in his gut) and he doesn’t like the fact he won’t be able to talk to his dad when times get rough. His dad said the same thing, I’ll always be there with you even when I’m not physically there. The last verse his father was on his death bed and he told his dad he doesn’t know if he can continue his life without his best friend (his dad). His dad told him even though he’s dying, he won’t be gone. Like he has since he was a little boy, he’ll always be there, even though he won’t be physically there. It’s not a “military song.” It’s just a passage of the middle of the man’s life telling the story of the relationship he has with his dad.
Back in November, I went to Luke Combs concert. He introduced this song, started to sing, and much like you, I had thoughts racing through my head. I lost my dad when I was 5 years old. I still remember every summer I would go to visit him and it would be the best time of my life. I went down to the hospital with my mom and there was one specific moment I will always remember. My dad was laying in his hospital bed, hugged me tight, and said the exact words that are in Luke's song. "Even though I'm leaving, I ain't going anywhere." When Luke started singing this song, I broke down. Luke's voice is so strong that even if he doesn't mean to make you cry, he will. Sorry for the short story. Just reminiscing.
If you had paid attention, last verse his Dad was dying and telling him that even though he was dying, he had passed on the traits of Fatherhood.... So, even though he was leaving he wasn't going nowhere!!! My husband of 30 years has passed and my youngest son has passed, so my other son looks at this song as if it was written for him!!
Awesome video bro from a vet to another vet thank you for your service definitely isn’t easy being in the service but something I’ll never regret in life
This makes me think of my relationship I have with my father. He just turned 70. I realistically know my time with him on this earth is dwindling down. He has survived 2 severe strokes, and is on blood pressure meds. I dread the day that he is no longer with me. I definitely don’t take my time with him for granted. He is my rock, and role model. I just hope that when I retire from the military this coming March, that he is right there to see it. I love my father immensely.
Having just lost my Dad last month this song hits me hard. I really needed to hear this right now though. Love this song, thank you for reacting to it!
That's one of my favorite songs. My uncle was in the Vietnam was. He recently passed and we were very close. And Billy thank you for your service. And all the vets out there. At home and away. You all are heroes to me.
@@robertgarner6339 just because his parents are alive doesn't mean the last verse isn't about death. Luke already said that part was about losing a parent and that he can't imagine having to go through it. Learn your facts.
I heard this for first time in 2021 fathers day at cemetery visiting my dad we lost in 2019. It had this 40 year old man ugly crying like I did the day he passed
My dad passed away back in May of 2018, so songs like this always remind me of him and always get me emotional. This is one of my favorite songs though
Thanks for giving a shout out to us military spouses. I dropped my husband off at his ship (San Diego) tonight and said goodbye for a long time. I came home and watched this reaction and it made me feel a lot better. Thanks for posting and sharing with us!
As a military wife (and now a military momma).. I just 4 months ago had a serious discussion with my now daughter in law... the absolute toughest job in any branch of the military is that of a military wife.
Billy, as always, I loved your reaction to this song! I can so relate too when my son left for the Marine Corps, it was the same thing! And the end, as his father was dying, he was telling him he wasn't scared to die, and would always be with him. Luke Combs is my favorite!
For everyone telling him what it is about, I think you forget why music is so powerful. We hear these songs and relate them to our own lives. The meaning that the songwriters and singers are putting out there hit us all in different ways. The most powerful songs last a lifetime, and almost everyone respects them for a personal connection to the lyrics that someone else may not have had. The video creator had life experiences that the song touched for him, bringing him to an emotional state. I'm sure that Luke would be just fine knowing that.
It was so hard on my sailor husband when kids didn't know who he was when he came back from overseas! Even when they were a little older they weren't always sure they wanted to hug him right away. My heart hurt for him.
my cousin who was more like my brother passed away in sept 2019 and this was his song to his kids , he played n our family band and could sing and play like no other , last song played was drift away and he was singing it , his 2 daughters danced together and his son and youngest daughter danced one more time in frt of their daddy singing before we said our last goodbye ..

It took me awhile to properly understand this song is telling three completely different phases in a father and child relationship. Beginning as a kid, middle as going to the Military and ending as the dad passing away... Legendary song writing
I usually Listen to the country radio station in my car. They played this song a lot in 2019, Lurk Combs was on the radio, telling the story behind this song. "I wanted it to kind of have that contrast a bit where it was softer and more lyric-driven in the verses,” explains Combs. “Then the chorus could still be this big singalong thing, but having it in that kind of upper register and giving it a little bit of the raspiness that people have become accustomed to with my stuff.” Dad holds the boy’s hand at the end of of that first verse and reassures him in the chorus when he’s left alone: “Just ’cause I’m leaving it don’t mean that/I won’t be right by your side.” That sets up the final verse, the surreal moments when dad transitions to the other side. “Daddy, I’m afraid,” the now-grown son says to his aging father. Again, Dad offers his hand and the same words of comfort. The middle verse proved to be the trickiest part. They needed another major point of separation and eventually decided on a son preparing to head into the service. It twists a bit as he does his best to act adult - “Daddy, I’m afraid” becomes “Dad, we’ll be late.” And the father is now just as fearful as the boy, realizing there’s no guarantee he’ll see his son alive again. Instead of holding his boy’s hand, Dad hugs his neck, and “Even though I’m leavin’ ” becomes “Even though you’re leavin’.”
It may not be my direct case but the person I'm currently seeing is CAF and soon as soon as they went Reg Force they were posted 17hrs from where we're both from. This song to me starts with a child being afraid of the monsters outside his room and dad reassures him he is not going anywhere. Then goes to the child becomes an adult going off to war and being afraid and father again reassures him he will always be there. The last his father is dying and son is afraid too go on without him. Father assured him that he’s not afraid and that even though he will be gone he will always be a n his heart.
I haven’t been in the military for 10 years and hearing that second verse sent me right back to getting on that bird to go to Afghanistan and looking back and seeing all those sad faces

This song was released shortly after I had to say goodbye to my own father. 61 is not long enough in life. I know that I'll see him again
Hope you have a merry Christmas
This song is like kids going to college and Leaving their parents and also when your dad goes to the Miller base
luke combs make hits
I pray for you dan and shay
This song hits me hard.. recently found out my dad only has 1-2 months to live and I’m only 20. He’s only 50 it’s too soon..
Back story don't if anyone brought it up . but the guy who wrote the song with Luke wanted to write a song for his son who was going off to college
Another that brings a tear. Between my husband being recalled, and my dad dying, yeah... Great song. 😢
