I share your reverence. I just hope we never have another generation which is forced to achieve greatness by what these heroes had to do. We owe that great generation everything we have and everything we are. I’m sure they would agree that we should all remain vigilant and even be prepared to die as they did to preserve our way of life. Ultimately though, I think they share our hope that the peace they brought to the world is an enduring one.

My father served in Milne Bay and Bougainville. He didn’t talk about the war much. He left Australia in the March of 1942 and returned home and discharged in the March of 1946. He camped for almost 4 solid years in a small tent, with a bamboo floor and the mud and rain was an ordeal for all of them. He had his 21st birthday in Milne Bay with his brother and two others in an outrigger canoe. Until after his passing away at 90 did I start to investigate his ordeal. He was tough and held an enormous respect for all who served. He never took us five kids camping over the holidays.

I think Bill Guarnere put it best in his series comment ... "I'm just one small part of a big war - just one small part." I've always felt that Easy Company was a metaphor - a symbol - of all who served to defeat the evil that existed in the world at that time, on the battlefields, as well as at home. Easy Company was representative of all the men and women of all the Allied countries regardless of the role they played. That generation, comprised of the heroes of all those countries, was indeed a great generation. World War II to date was the greatest calamity in human history and that generation stood up to face it, courageously and with firm resolve and succeeded.
