    Mapex is the Hyundai of drums..... their early stuff didn't really compare well with the major manufacturers but they got a foothold and took off. Now they have some really good stuff. These drums sound good and look good,

      I used to own a black panther, brass master in 14×6.5..it was the best sounding snare I've ever heard, still sad that it was stolen from my car in London after a gig and they no longer make the smooth shelled, die cast hoop,24 carrat gold plated hardware version...at least i got to do tons of session work with it.

    its good to see cheap equipment having a good micing/recording review, most of the times the cheap stuff sound very bad because it doenst have the same treatment on reviews as the expensive stuff. Everything can work well with good mics, new heads, tuning and a good player behind.

    Normally I'm all about the piccolo's, so I'm glad to see some here. But uh.... my favorite in this video was the 10 inch sidesnare @ high tuning. That has a nasty snap.... In a good way! 😁

    This was great! I was looking at the 14x6.5 maple. I picked up a lightly used Mapex HBZ horizon set for cheap recently as a cheap gig kit. The snare is built the same as these and it actually plays decent. With good heads and a bit of playing around you can get these drums sounding pretty slick. You can make “value” drums sound good especially in good hands. Cymbals is where you really hear the difference in quality and range personally. This is a great way not to blow your budget out and get something decent enough.

  • @Barteque9
    @Barteque9 Год назад +4

    14x8, 14x3, 13x6 maples were great in both tunings.
    10 inch maple in low tuning sounds like a perfect low volume snare :-)

    Here in France Mapex struggled to take off 20 years ago, only because brand´s name sounded like a mix of Mapa (a local brand that sells dishwashing gloves and sponges) with Durex (a British-Dutch condom manufacturer).

    I really liked the maple poplar piccolo and the 8" maple poplar!! I'm not usually a fan of 8s, but that drum has a real bark to it. Beautiful!! Having both would be a very nice combo! At those prices, it could be doable.

    I really like the 14x6.5 Steel and the 14x8 maple/poplar, incredible value on these in particular. Also, the Paiste 900 line is very overlooked imo, some very nice cymbals in that line and they also don't cost an arm and a leg.

    Along with the Black Panther line up, Mapex are covering all the bases. Giving players a huge choice of snares that are probably the best vfm at the respective price point.
    Question, though: Why does the throw off on the piccolo lean out at an angle?

    Ok, so if these come with crappy heads, how come they sound so good on this video ? Also I was stunned to hear the hat's were Paiste 900's. Man they rocked. And I happen to like Zildjian's when it comes to Hat's 😀(Still love my 35 yr old New Beats) . PS: After watching you guys for over 10 yrs on YT, I made my 1st purchase with DCP last week, bought 2 Tama Sky Blue Aurora add-on 8" & 13". Great service from James. Will need to talk to him about the 18". Do I really need a 18" Floor tom. Hmm. Ha ha ha. Anyway thanks 😀 Keep posting y'all. Love your videos.

    In the real world, you could take any one of these drums tuned right to your local tavern for a gig, and Noone would know you were playing a "cheap" snare. Not even a drummer with years of experience. With the right head, and tuned right, these all would fly in any bar gig.

  • @richwilson5969

    You guys must have changed out the heads or least reso. I just bought the 3.5x14. Junk is only word I will describe. IDE have to spend$$$ to replace both heads, snare wires, and hoops. Those are like 1.3 or 1.5 Triple flanged. I stopped tensioning when I thought something would give. One small lug and 2 tension rods pulling at higher tensions. Sending mine right back where I got it.
