IT SOUNDS INSANE
I have a ddrum, similar specs with diecast hoops. Definitely try diecast hoops on it. I also have the Mapex 5.5x13 "Black Panther/Brass Master" Black nickel over brass with diecast hoops and it's pretty amazing too.

Hey Molly! Great review! I have one in the studio now and I have been using it a lot! 13" snares were a little different only 1" difference when it came to hitting in the center and rim shots. It felt awkward at first, but I adjusted and love it! The Mapex Hydro is great! It does a great job and was well worth adding to the snare collection!

I have 5 black panther snares from the early to mid 2000’s. I will say they are great. I have snares that are much more expensive and the BP’s still hold their own.
The good, the snare wires on my Phosphor Bronze are still all intact after 15 years, my Dunnett are not after 1 year of owning it.
The bad, I had a 10x5.5 hammered phosphor bronze side snare that a lug where the lug attaches to the drum body crumbled….. Mapex unfortunately no longer had these lugs nor did they offer me an alternative so I was a little disappointed in the customer service at that time.
Overall, killer drums.

Awesome snare! I've got the 14*7 Solidus! Love this beauty! All those Black Panther are incredible! Just the EAD for a sound demonstration..... The EAD makes almost every snare sound the same (just my opinion)

I have a number of different Black Panther snare drums. the first one I got with the Sonic Saver hoops is my Velvetone snare drum which came with the matching kit. it took a little getting used to the hoop, but once I got used to it, I'll never own another regular 2.3 flanged hoop (power hoop, or whatever they call it) because I can get the pop out of the shots with the sticks, nor can I get the rebound either like I can with the Sonic Saver hoops. Die cast hoops are fine, sure, but they seem to choke the sound, as well the effort you put into each stick stroke. Sonic Saver hoops offer such velocity and volume, that I do believe I'm partially deaf now because of that. I'm suing Mapex (just kidding).

The hoops are made like the slingerland stick saver hoops.

The snare drum is excellent but Yamaha Ead10 gives horrible unnatural sound and every snare sounds the same with that sh*t.
Yah it really does sound amazing in person.. hard to get a great sound with the EAD since it’s a condenser mic
