    If you’d continued on this track at the very end for another km, you would’ve seen one of the treasures of Leros from the Italian occupation.

      @MeanderingMax  4 года назад

      Aw, it looked like it just ended at a ranch around the bend from the point where I ended. Just one more km on the dirt road? I’m curious what it is all the way back there.

      I did enjoy Leros very much. It has many different things to see and didn't feel overdone for tourists. Though there are parts dedicated to tourism..

    My grandfather was a British soldier with the Welsh fusiliers on Leros and was captured by the Germans and taken to Germany to work in POW camp until the end of the war. His name was Robert John Thomas. He lived until he was 92 in Llanfair P G North Wales. There's a website on Facebook about the battle of leros.

      Oh wow! I’m glad to hear he made it through and lived a long life, that sounds like a scary experience. The island has quite a history! I find it very interesting, but kind of intense and sad. I have a couple of videos where I explored sites from the war. I hope to go back and see more someday.

      Brendan,
      My father was an sailor in the Italian Navy. After September 8 1943 when Mussolini fell the Brigadier General Macherpa in the Italian Navy accepted the help of the English army and I guess your grandfather was one of them. My dad was then captured by the germans and as POW was moved to germany and the ucraine as forced labor. He was freed by the russian red army in 1944. I am here today possibly because of the contribution of your grandfather. Thank you for the comments

      Thanks for the comment, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
      Walking is my favorite way to explore new places, you see so much more and the exercise offsets indulging in the local foods. Other means of transportation are good for an overview of where to walk, but it’s walking that gives you a real connection.

      @@MeanderingMax its a little hidden you dont notice it as you approach by sea. We went over for a meal and drinks one night last year ( have been a few times over the last 4 years) typical greek, nothing rushed had a great time.Good service and good prices too. He has his own area to moor your boat and ypu can use your tender to sail over to shore pop up for a drink brfore exploring . We have watched from the boat people walk up to the gate and stand there for ages ringing the bell but as its Greece they dont rush lol. We were told originally people would just use it as a short cut and not buy a drink so he put he gate and bell so people would wonder whats behind there and if let in they would stop for a drink. You get a great view into the bay from there too.
