Mero losing to Gillberg and leaving the company was one of my fist "I thought this was supposed to be fake" moments in wrestling. Mero never came back, and the pain that remained was real.
Mero's Wild Thing finisher was the first time I ever saw the shooting star press. In hindsight it shows how much WWE trusted him. Plus it was quite an athletic move for a man of his size.
I remember Mero and Butterbean were supposed to have a blow off match at Wrestlemania. Since there boxing at DX IYH was panned. The feud was dropped. WWF then used Butterbean to kill Bart Gunn.

I had stopped following wrestling around that time (and never really watched WCW anyway), so I had no idea who he was. @Hey Zeus because tna was doing way more for women's wrestling before wwe. Plus wwe is the one who turned women's wrestling into a joke in the first place.
Will Cortez yep, mero has made more merchandise than stone cold but the texas rattlesnake, with his austin 3:16 shirt, outsold marc's merchandise big time
Funny thing. Mick Foley tells a story in his book "Have a nice day" where he had a meeting about potential merchandise for Mankind not long after his debut with the company. During the meeting, he saw everything the WWE of the time had invested in merchandising for Marc Mero and it was huge. During the same meeting, Stone Cold walked by and asked the marketing guy when they were planning to create some Stone Cold Steve Austin merchandise and the guy literally told Austin there was no plan to ever do that. I would've loved to see that marketing guy's face when the Austin 3:16 shirt came out.

There where 2 problems with Mero in the WWE. firstly, vince wanted Johnny B. Badd, not Marc Mero. I personally can't blame him, because the gimmick was great in WCW. secondly, which is the even bigger problem, his wife sable got most of the spotlight. It got even worse when he was for half a year. When he came back with Sable in his corner, the people only watch Meros matches because of her and nothing else. But like you said, it's good to know that he is still in good health, which can't be said about most wrestlers in the last 20 years.
TBF, these 2 problems you can hardly blame on the man, as he was a solid hand, had a good attitude and did what was asked of him, to a fault. But I'm also glad he's healthy and happy, and his wrestling run did a lot of good for the business as a whole, whether directly or not.

According to practically everyone that worked with Vince at the time (Cornette, Prichard and Russo), Vince had legitimately thought that Marc Mero was going to be the next big star. That’s why Mero was pushed so hard at the start of his run and was the first guy the WWF signed a guaranteed deal with
I remember a story from back then, when Scott Hall and Kevin Nash signed with WCW, Vince was going around telling people: ''Don't worry guys! They got Hall and Nash but we got Marc Mero!'' Surprisingly, that didn't exactly stop guys from worrying.
Glad that you've put the spotlight on a very underrated talent. I've always liked Johnny B. Badd back in his WCW days, and I was really happy to see him jump ship to the WWF. Shame that he bring the gimmick with him, but "Wildman" Marc Mero also rolls off the tongue quite well. And am I the only one that still thinks him being "Marvelous" Marc Mero was a tad... generic?
Marc definitely got the short end of the stick during his WWF days, but like Brian said, at least he seems happy with what he's doing now that he's retired, so that's a plus.

Not necessarily. Sable sued, sure, but she then came back to the WWE as Vince's mistress. Also several other Hall of Famers had sued the WWE and were still admitted years later; Jesse Ventura and Ultimate Warrior being the first to immediately spring to mind.
