Problem with that 2 steps only protocol is that a) the floss with lots of stuff still around on the outside pulls new stuff in between the teeth (and one does not even see how much came out between the teeth in that mess) and b) so does the final brushing.
      I do
      1. a quick rough brush first to remove the bulk
      2. interdental brush for the outer teeth with some space between, then floss the rest or all
      3. main brushing

A developed visible cavity can not heal itself based on all evidence I have seen nor is it ever reported. Only the very surface of the teeth when slightly demineralized can remineralize through the saliva over time if further damage is avoided.
However there is research going on in the field of regenerative medicine that could one day make it possible to stimulate the tissues and stemcells in the jaw to produce a whole new tooth, which would make severely damaged teeth not a problem anymore because they could be replaced by a stemcell based implant that matures into a full tooth or with advances in bioelectric signaling even the possibility of stimulating the tissues below a damaged or removed tooth to generate a new tooth from the ground up, as happens in children twice.

Demineralization (white spots) and very early cavities can potentially be repaired. The vast majority of cavities cannot be repaired and need a filling though. My exp. is anecdotal but I had pretty severe demineralization & sensitivity and Novamin has given me the best results. It's the only toothpaste that has visibly reduced white spots and translucency. It forms a bioactive glass (hydroxyapatite) layer over the enamel. Tricalcium phosphate toothpastes did do better than regular toothpaste, but Novamin is much more effective. There really should be more studies on it.

I had a small cavity on a tooth surface underneath a bridge identified by two dentists (a family dentist and a periodontist) about 10 years ago but had major work done first. No dental appointments during covid. But the small cavity is not there anymore on my xray 6 months ago (checked by 2 dentist and my periodontist). Howver, I have new cavities from old crowns and a molar next to my wisdom that had no cavity at all before now need a root canal :(. I have had a lot of fillings and crowns done in my mouth so I don't have good teeth at all. I have had major abdominal surgery which effects my digestion very badly for quite a few years now and I about 2 years in after my major surgery, the small cavity was still there. The only different is that I have switched to herbal toothpaste for about 6 years. Taking into consideration my declined health after abdominal surgery, plus I was told to have osteopenia when I had my first bone density test about 3 years ago: Yes, small cavity does heal.

I used to only floss sporadically, because I hated it. My teeth are tightly spaced, and the floss would break as I tried to work it in or out. A couple of years ago, I started flossing regularly, at least 6 nights a week. I didn’t say anything to the hygienist. After finishing her work, she asked me if I was doing anything differently because my gum health was much improved. 😊

I read an article somewhere on the web about 6 months ago that said this, perhaps this very study, I don't remember. I'm glad I did because I much prefer brushing to flossing so I now get the best bit last! I also use Picksters after flossing which seem to get more gunk out from between my teeth that the floss missed. Floss then Pickster then brush. I've also been using toothpaste tabs for the past few years so there's no empty tube to deal with. My dentist is happy (even though she hasn't got much to do on my teeth!) so I'm happy.

Here's my sequence, and it's just once per day, first thing in the morning, before breakfast: 1. Pre-rinse swished around mouth for about 15 seconds (brand: Essential Oxygen). 2. Brush w/manual brush toothbrush and toothpaste (Brands: Coco floss, Essential Oxygen), 3. Floss upper teeth (Brand: Coco floss). 4. Floss bottom teeth (Brand: EcoDent). Note: reason I cant use the woven Cocofloss on bottom is that it seems to get caught in certain areas and just gets shredded. EcoDent is more of a string and doesn't have that problem, but doesn't feel as effective. 5. Floss furthest back teeth with unflavored Listerine dental stick. 6. Finally, brush all teeth with Philips SonicCare "diamond " clean model electric toothbrush.
In regards to the pre-rinse solution. Lately I've made my own: 10 ounces Fiji water, 3 ounces hydrogen peroxide, 3 ounces Perio-Brite by Nature's Answer. Measurements are approximate.
So how are my checkups? Stellar, most years. No root canals ever in my life. I wish I'd learned all this in my teenage years - I could have avoided the 4 crowns and onlay that I have...but better late than never.

I don't know what you're looking for, there likely hasn't been too much recent research into this. Yle published a pretty thorough article in 2019 (in Finnish) titled "Ksylitolia on syötetty koko kansalle - mitä koivusokeribuumista jäi käteen? Nykylasten suussa muhii uusia katastrofeja" (transl. "Xylitol has been fed to the whole population - what did the birch sugar boom leave us with? The children of today have new disasters festering in their mouths"). It basically rebutes prior criticisms aimed towards xylitol; it is still substantial for preventing caries but you need to consume enough (about 5g per day) and obviously the effect is also not as significant if you already have good caries prevention, though it still contributes to maintaining a good dental health when combined with other forms of care. Bigger problems than lack of xylitol consumption for the population level dental health in Finland are people not brushing enough (only about half of Finnish men brush twice every day) and snacking culture. Finnish xylitol research has stagnated because xylitol production has been largely moved or sold abroad (there's hopefulness that it will be researched abroad instead, though to me it seems like not much has come of that yet). Erythritol may replace it eventually but for now xylitol still maintains its place in Finland.

      Agreed with @ss1extreme
Also, why would you want more dirt "into" the gaps? 🤔
That would make it more difficult for the toothbrush to get to that "dirt" thereafter.
... leading to even more gingivitis and tooth decay.
Instead of pushing the "dirt" into a hard-to-reach gap, you should be aiming to remove the "dirt" completely.
Ideally, you'd want to protect the whole tooth - including the gaps, not just the front (and back) faces.

This video explores the ongoing debate about the optimal sequence of flossing and brushing teeth, presenting arguments and research findings to determine the most effective method for dental hygiene.
    🦷 Debate on Flossing Sequence
Common Practice: It's commonly accepted that flossing plays a significant role in removing plaque and reducing gingivitis.
Research Insights: Various studies show mixed results on whether flossing before or after brushing is more effective.
    🧪 Scientific Findings
Study Methodologies: The video discusses studies with weak methodologies, highlighting the difficulty in producing conclusive evidence on flossing's benefits.
Current Recommendations: Despite weak evidence, dental associations continue to recommend daily brushing and flossing.
    🔄 Optimal Flossing Method
Floss First: Research suggests that flossing before brushing might be more beneficial in terms of plaque removal and fluoride retention.

How to NEVER need a dentist again...
So simple but never discussed by dentists. Hydrogen peroxide. Simply swish for 5 seconds before brushing at night.
In chemistry labs, peroxide is a reaction accelerator. It makes everything work better. It doesn't just whiten, it mechanically digs in under the gums in the crevices. Probably why they add it to so many dental products.
Ask a dentist about it and they'll say something idiotic like, it's associated with hairy tongue 😅. Obviously they don't want you to know about this simple solution.
Part 2 is... do a water only toothbrush in the morning after breakfast. No toothpaste needed. Just a wet toothbrush and when you're done swish.
The whole idea is to make your dental hygiene effortless, which this is. I've told quite a few friends about this over the years and it always solves their yucky teeth problem! This is something that REALLY needs to be put to the test!

Imo brush then water pick, and not sure why you'd add floss as well if your waterpik is good, but I guess it wouldn't hurt if you are willing to do that. But yeah, I don't think a waterpik is analogous to regular since it rinses your mouth out and your teeth off as well -- so I think it's as good or better to waterpik afterwards. Not sure why he didn't mention waterpiks -- maybe there isn't enough research, but a waterpik is just so much better in terms of ease and comfort compared to floss.

Dentine mimi tooth brush is good, as food gets between the teeth. That's the way I am doing it, flossing, then brush, the rinse with alcohol free mouth wash.

Studies funded by companies should be viewed critically anyway. What I'm surprised about is that no public funding has been allocated to this.

Cleaning symbiosis: open your mouth and let birds clean your teeth. It works for crocodiles!
