First time viewing your channel. I'm impressed. The piece of copper/brass with the writing on it is a zipper pull, I think. The silver band is very interesting. As you know, silversmithing is highly regulated. That's why everything has a smith's mark. Taxes paid, trademark entered, etc. As a tinsmith, I know that when sheet metal is cut with shears it naturally will roll up like that. I think it is possible that someone was altering or reworking a piece and needed to remove the original smiths mark. That scrap was headed for the crucible. Thanks. Cheers.
Hello John, Looked like a great hunt! I believe your bit of silver was an embellishment on a stoneware tankard, cup, or pitcher. I’ve seen them trimmed with silver banding just like that! Take care, and happy hunting!
It looks like it was stripped off of whatever it was on and rolled up intentionally. I'm thinking that you may have found an item from a personal hoard of valuables. I'd scour that area intensely. Just amazing the lands that you have available to hunt.
Just wanted to say I love your vids, your knowledge of history and obvious joy at what you and the boys find. Your green stone celtic cross stone however I think..is potentially one of the most stunning significant finds you've come across. The stone itself was selected for a reason...its amazing. Can't wait to hear what the experts opinion is...Brilliant! And keep up the good work mate. Happy Xmas to you all..
I believe that round polished stone has the Knights Templar Cross on it. I've seen them on the treasure hunt at Oak Island. They also observed them in France at Templer structures. Have a healthy New Year.
G’day John. That writing appears to be James Yates, a very large pewter manufacturing firm in the 19th and early 20thC. Buggered if I know what it is. Must be one of there more obscure items. The bottom word might be warranted, or patented? I wonder if your old stone might be for burnishing vellum parchment?? It has that personal look to it. If so, presumably medieval, maybe early medieval. A really nice find. Congrats, Wayne
I was surprised to see the bridle rosette you uncovered at the 13:00 min.mark. I uncovered an identical rosette in a farm field here in Brandywine, Maryland a couple of yrs. ago. Thanks for the good content and a Happy New Year!
Many thanks Kelv, yes a weird bit of silver. Some suggestions of a tankard trim? But I’m not sure. Nothing to report on the stone, it’s off being looked at by an expert so fingers crossed we get an ID soon. I’ll keep you posted in the new year
I think the stone is green jasper, which can be found in Angus. Could the stone maybe have been used in parchment making? Stones were used to rub pastes into the parchment to smooth and whiten it.
first one of your videos i have seen, i am a yank, a texas yank. i have a slight bit different accent than y’all, but i do really enjoy y’all’s. my mothers people were McDaniels, we have traced the family back to the time of robert the bruce. i definitely enjoyed you video and i am looking forward to seeing more. good luck
The stone with the cross looks like it could be made from Bloodstone with the green hue to it and the small red/orange markings. There is a small outcrop of bloodstone on the Isle of Rum in the Inner Hebridese, if my memory serves me right I believe all other bloodstone is found very far from the UK. Love your videos! Cheers, Mark H
If the stone is rare for Scotland then there is a chance it is a piece from the Holy Land, or at least claimed as such. Pieces of stone, or wood or water or anything really, from the Holy Land were very popular Christian souvenirs in the middle ages, especially around about the time of the Crusades when lots of people were coming and going from Europe.
It looks like green jasper/bloodstone (not convinced I can see any red in it though?) - you can find both in Angus which is pretty close to where it was found

The Stone with the Cross looks interesting. I would have thought the stone would have been polished with wax or something to bring the colour out. Maybe from a religious Mace or Staff. 👍
The round thing ( horse brass ) looks like half a small door knocker, the plate you knock on. We had them on all the doors in our house , the servants used them back in the day
Hiya, newbies here enjoying your videos. We think the "horse brass" may actually be part of a furniture handle where the circular handle sat inside the outside ring and lifted up to operate the door/drawer. Could be wrong!😁
Hi Joy. Much appreciated. I think you are spot on. An incorrect ID by me but this is why RUclips is great to have others to help with ID! Best wishes and have a great new year and a healthy 2023!
Need a little duffle as part of your gear. I have one that I keep extra batteries, drinking water or such, gloves and all associated gear to keep you on the fields.

Found 2 musket balls and a few old coins in a park walking distance from my home typical.... Anyway greetings from Ireland new Subscriber here.. Regards Heavydigging 👍👍
Maybe the button is a hunting dog and it was off a hunting jacket, and back in the day they used to cut bits off silver items to sell it as its had to have the hallmark on it and that's why alot of silver thimbles are missing bottom

That copper/bronze "comb" or rake is curious. Those metals are unusual in agriculture from the Iron Age on. I would wonder about a fragment of something from WW II.
I use a military day sack and put my find pouch, water bottle, toothbrush, tin foil, coffee flask, sandwiches, remote control, headphones, etc , etc, I have been detecting 43 years and still going strong lol P.S. Also a Tayside Detectorist.
Thank you so much for your great videos and wonderful history. I have what is probably a really stupid question from a non-detector but a magpie prone to pick the odd relic. Why so many coins? I would think that coins would be the last thing to become "lost" regardless of the time period. Were coins not used as payment for goods? Maybe there was more bartering and trading for goods? I understand the bullets and musket balls in the fields but money??? Thanks in advance for any explanation.
Thanks Paula. No such thing as a stupid question!! These fields were intensively farmed for centuries. There’s old medieval ploughing going back to the 1300/1400’s and until the advent of tractors and mechanised farming it was all done by hand including the harvest which could have involved 100’s of people. Hello.. Great video. Can I ask what make/model is your detector please? I am after a one and as a complete beginner I looking for advice on what to go for. Thanks
Good morning. Glad you enjoyed the video. My detector is an XP DEUS II (£1300) and prior to that I had an XP Goldmaxx Power v4 (£250 off eBay second hand) The other guys use an XP Deus II, a Goldmaxx Power and a Garrett ATPro International. It’s important you get a machine that meets your needs. Buying new £450/500 or above should be a minimum spend. Second hand there are some good machines out there but be careful they are in full working order. Don’t get a machine that’s too complex for you. I used to have a White DFX and you needed a computing degree to fine tune it. Look for any clubs in your area, find out what machines they use as you’d be on similar soils. Lastly email or call Regtons Metal detectors for advice. They’ll let me know what machine might suit you. Happy hunting!!!
Speaking of forgetting equipment: I went deer hunting one time and forgot my boots. As fate would have it, I ended up shooting a 180 lbs. whitetail buck and had to drag it 500 yards in flip-flops! I went another time and forgot my bullets! I still sat there and watched the deer, of course. I don't think you'd forget your detector and walk around the field swinging your bare arm. LOL
Could the button be a Wolf Hound maybe? Looks quite large...although, I'm not sure the tail fits...unless, I'm looking at it all wrong and it's a fox 😅
Do you ever do videos where you manage to identify those finds that were doin ya head in (Black Country not an attempt at Scottish) when you found them? 👍👍😉
I've detected along wagon trails in California far younger than your trackway. But, people regularly following those in wagons seemed to perpetually have bits falling of the wagons, oxen losing shoes, shells from hunting for the pot from the wagon seat, and liquour empties being tossed. Didn't find any coins. That piece of mixed cuprous and ferrous metals with the stamped lettering, could that bit you read as "Trois" be "Tho's," which is a common 19th century abbreviation for "Thomas?" If that's possible, the second word might be the surname "Watts." Recent historical material materials can be as archaeologically puzzling as older objects. Take it from a retired archaeologist who has worked on everything from the late Pleistocene to WW II era sites in the US.
Thanks Jan. most people kept coins on them and worked labouring in the fields. It was intensive work bending lifting often involving dozens or even hundreds at harvest time and if you were riding a horse, easy to drop stuff too!
Hi Steven. They are from eBay. I can’t send a link but if you search for them under MCB Electronics you’ll find them. His advert says they fit deus I and II £54.99. I can’t vouch for them long term but so far so good!!
Hi Gary. I do indeed (much to my wife’s anger!) have boxes and boxes and boxes everywhere full of everything!!! I’ve also got a cabinet of the ‘good stuff’…. I’ll do a video eventually for all to see! Best wishes for 2023 and have a great New Year
Here's a conundrum for all you Scots. My grand mum was a Wallace but once she married she became a Gildard. The only record that I can find is Gildard and sons ,solicitors Glasgow. Any help would be appreciated.
Gildard. That’s a name I’ve never heard before. A search online suggests a link with France which isn’t uncommon as after the Norman invasion of England in 1066 lots of French Norman families came to Scotland in the 11th and 12th centuries thanks to our adoption of the feudal system. In 1891 52% of all the Gildards living in the UK lived in Yorkshire!
@@thescottishdetectorist You are probably correct. They were two Norman Saints who were supposedly brothers but actually lived about 60 years apart. I believe that there are two chapels dedicated to them, one in France and the other in the south of England. My guess is that the Scottish Gildards drew the short end of the stick :(
I like this as much for your soothing Scottish accent and clear explanations of history as for your interesting finds.
Many thanks Tim. Thanks for the kind words and I’m glad you enjoy! Best wishes and I hope you have a great Hogmanay and a happy and healthy 2023!

Hi John, I’ve never used the Orx I’m afraid, only the Xp Goldmaxx power V4. Happy hunting and best wishes for 2023
Do you ever do videos where you manage to identify those finds that were doin ya head in (Black Country not an attempt at Scottish) when you found them? 👍👍😉
I’ve a long list of ‘whatdahellisthat’ finds which I’ve never yet managed to Id
Will we see the wife out standing in the field? Happy New Year!
Hopefully no time soon!! Don’t want her ruining me ‘me time’ 😂
And don’t tell her I said that 🥊
I've detected along wagon trails in California far younger than your trackway.
Much appreciated and thanks for the suggestions! Happy hunting!!
Great Video, indeed. But what I don't get is that people always lose their coins.
Thanks Jan. most people kept coins on them and worked labouring in the fields. It was intensive work bending lifting often involving dozens or even hundreds at harvest time and if you were riding a horse, easy to drop stuff too!
Wouldn't have found this channel without cleggy's shout out. Love it. Cheers.
Thanks Nick! Happy to have you and all thanks to Cleggy! Marry Christmas and I hope you had a great time
@@thescottishdetectorist Had a great time, just got my deus 2 for Christmas. Can't wait to try it out. Cheers.
@@Nicknofish fantastic!!! Happy hunting!! Let me know how you get on!
@@thescottishdetectorist Will do. Cheers
The disk object (horse brass? not sure) at 13:07, looks to have an edelweiss flower on it however I could be wrong.
Many thanks, I’ll need to look that one up!
The Button, if it is livery, seems to be a Wolf, and would be a badge f the estate the coat came from.
Thanks Wanda. I think you are right it is a wolf!! Have a great new year

So far so good, been out with them twice and much more comfortable and more importantly warmer ears!! 😆 have a great Hogmanay. Best wishes, John
I was just wondering where did you get your headphones from and would it fit old Deus
Hi Steven. They are from eBay. I can’t send a link but if you search for them under MCB Electronics you’ll find them. His advert says they fit deus I and II £54.99. I can’t vouch for them long term but so far so good!!
Tip…tie your brush to your shovel.
Good thinking! Maybe I should then tie myself to the shovel and metal detector too! 😆 happy new year Richard
Enjoying your videos. What do you do with all your finds ? Do you have boxes of stuff all over your house.
Hi Gary. I do indeed (much to my wife’s anger!) have boxes and boxes and boxes everywhere full of everything!!! I’ve also got a cabinet of the ‘good stuff’…. I’ll do a video eventually for all to see! Best wishes for 2023 and have a great New Year
@@thescottishdetectorist I will look forward to seeing your hoard of stuff. Here's wishing you happy hunting in 2023 🤘

should add a magnifying glass to your list of things to bring.
Sometimes Romans used to write curses on lead
Are you certain the "musket ball" you found isn't a shot from a shotgun? It's pretty small diameter.
We call them ball buttons.
14.00 its the back plate of a 1930s draw pull,,,,,,nothing to do with horses
Yes I got this one totally wrong 😂 thanks Andy

Many thanks and have a great new year
The strip of silver is from the rim from a horn drinking cup
Thanks for the info Mike
Looks like an arrow tip for hunting maybe.
That would be amazing
Here's a conundrum for all you Scots.
My grand mum was a Wallace but once she married she became a Gildard.
The only record that I can find is Gildard and sons ,solicitors Glasgow.
Any help would be appreciated.
Census records. Unusual name. Never heard it in Australia.
My guess is that the Scottish Gildards drew the short end of the stick :(
Liked before intro 😎
Much appreciated
Thats a LIon Passant, denotes it's been assayed as Sterling Silver
That’s the words I was looking for!!
Many thanks and have a great new year
