1930's bias dresses had all these beautiful shapes and seams, which helped to eliminate waste. Bias dresses can have very little waste if planned correctly.
Nick ! You had me transfixed to your video on that bias dress. I shall be running to the fabric store to buy pieces of material.l am bored again, so sewing will take me to another level . I am highly motivated. Thanks for sharing your video with me .
Anyone who chose that thumbs down opinion is certainly jealous because they cannot work at your superb skill level or communicate as you do. UR GOD's gift to us!
Omg i have never listened to any fashion makers talk through their video until I watched yours. Loving your personality and how you describe every single thing. Continue doing this please!
Lol Nick you are actually so hilarious I love your sound effects of the fabric relaxing 😂 As a patternmaker for 8 years now I am still learning everyday and it’s inspiring to see someone else who gets so excited about the technical aspects of garment creation 😘
Love your video's Nick! I am a full time working mother who wouldn't normally have time to learn something like this, but it has always been my passion. I have watched your video's over and over, got a mannequin for Christmas, and am ready to try my hand. I just want to thank you so much for the time you put into this series, and anticipate your next video!!
Hi Amber! OMG!! I am sooo happy to read your comment! Congrats on getting a mannequin for Christmas and Thank you for your lovely words! I am getting read to put up many more videos soon!!! Stay tuned... --Nick
I am so in love with your sense of humor Nick, tell me what to do to be your student, besides I'd 'really want to see a tutorial on how to drape the semon dress behind you (at the end of the video), love you 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
Thanks for this Nick. I have a draping presentation tomorrow. I'm gonna do this with some different design thanks for this really. Its gonna help me tomorrow.😊
Love it!! You are an awesome teacher! Everything was so easy to understand and you explain it so that there is no way I could make a mistake!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜😘
I draped a test out of polyester cheap fabric and fit is great-but have sewn up cheap poly one and issues always arise. Would love more techniques on bias sewing/linings for silks and sewing tips. Would you be adding any of these tutorials? I'm making a dress I designed in expensive silk charmeuse and do not want to mess it up. Love your turtorials!!!
Hi Joanne! OMG!!! Tell me about it! (sewing cheap polyester satins on the bias!!). When reading your comment I almost had the (fashion) shivers! Oh the unraveling, the fabric shredding...oh the cheap poly! Bless its heart. I wish I could tell you there was a special trick but there isn't. It's what you must go through when sewing in that cheap fabric so you don't waste it on an expensive silk charmeuse. To help, however, make sure you use a needle that is small,--like size "11" or smaller; made for sewing thinner fabrics. And also, a tighter tension on your machine's tension knob might help as well. Also using smaller stitch sizes might help. It's the unraveling of the fabric at the edges that makes me KRAZEE!!!! Anyhow, hope some of this info. helps and Best of Luck. Also, I wish I could do sewing tutorials but I think there are enough videos online of these and for now, I just wanted to concentrate on Draping and Patterns as well as Sketching. All of those videos take a lot of time so I didn't want to get too involved with adding another layer of videos--like sewing ;) At least for now. Thank you for enjoying my tutorials btw! XO, Nick
Hello Nick,Thank you for your response! I am sorry for the delay in seeing this. I also had the fashion shivers the whole time with the horrible shredding. I would never waste on the beautiful Charmeuse Ombre I purchased at Mood! That would be a nightmare. My fabric is stunning. I actually powered through two test runs on draping and sewing -even lining...(amid all shredding and horror) of that poly for fit as well and glad I did! I did find many tutorials on needle sizes, tension, threads and stitches for silk online. I finally cut the REAL DEAL and sewing is working out beautiful. The dress fits me so wonderful. Steaming it while sewing makes me shiver now. I have my old text books from FIT when I graduated in 1980-before you were a twinkle in your parents eyes.LOL. It has been 30 years since I designed. ( I had to change careers-long story) I am semi-retired and back at it enjoying creating clothes, but just for me! I love to drape and its wonderful for you to take the time to answer me. Keep posting the videos! I wish they had this when I was in school. Love your upbeat and funny personality. :) Joanne
me encantó! !siempre me ha costado mucho costurar un vestido al bies y mucho más que el drapeado del busto quede bien,..ya mismo voy a utilizar tu técnica. Sos genial Nick..! sigue siempre así! ! Un gran abrazo !
l love your enthusiasm and spark! It would be wonderful to see a video on making a silk bias slip for under a dress (spaghetti strap or strapless) b/c it is so hard to find slips in the stores especially in a fashion color or long ones.
Hi Nick, I am really impressed with your work and how you genuinely like to teach people like us. I really would like to try this dress but how do I know how much material to purchase for this DIY? Bust 38, waist 36 and hip 43. Thanks in advance for the guidance.
I'm going to dig through your videos to find where you actually transfer the fabric you draped to a pattern(?) to use for cutting the real material. I'm sure there's got to be one somewhere. Thank you again!
Easiest way to learn how to sew nearly anything is to take and old shirt and take it apart and studying how it all goes together. It's all just working folds and seams and fitting peices together like a jigsaw.
Hi Nick I love your videos. You are a great teacher!!! My questions are: my lining is also cutted on bias? and how can I fix it to the dress? thanks a lot!
Very good draping video thank u ! I have a question at the end though, how do you remove the tight dress securely from the stand without ruining all the pining ? And if it was a longer skirt would you just continue pining until the end of the skirt ? Thanks !!
this is not what you sew together. this was the drape for the pattern pieces for the real dress. you take these pieces and transfer the shapes and markings to the wrong side of the real fabric and THEN sew those new pieces together. otherwise you'd have a dress with a big grain line down the center front and sharpie marker in the seam.
Hi sir in this lockdown period I just thought to learn something new. Really the videos are interesting the way you present. I love them. I hope you will teach to stitch them too. Thank you so much. From Srilanka
Do you add a sheer, stretchy strip of elastic to attach to each side of the upper shoulders in back to help prevent the shoulders from slipping down the arms? Or , perhaps a length of jewel “ bling” in the shape of a “ Y “ as a nice decor attachment?
Hello Verreoes! I watched all of your instruction video. such a helpful and fun video. love this channel. just I'm curious how to do edge of the neckline of this dress(do you leave it just as triangle shape? and how do you finish raw edge? ) thank you so much~
Hi! First of all: GREAT questions!! Here are my answers and I hope these help you :) 1) In terms of the edge of the neckline of the dress: YES! It's is a triangle but...you can also curve it if you don't like it being a triangle. So, that's your choice, but traditionally, it's a triangle. 2) For finishing the raw edge: a) you usually want to sew a baby hem (about a 1/4 of an inch fold--or 6.35 mm). It looks nicer when it folded and top stitched but very tiny fold. b) You can also use bias binding to finish/clean the raw edge. Just make sure it's not too thick and bulky bias biding. c) Thirdly, you can also using pinking shears (scissor with serrated blades--like "shark teeth"), to finish the raw edge--all these prevent any fabric unraveling. Hope these answers help! --Nick

Thank you Nick, I attended F.I.T. in 1986/87 and have done nothing with my education. You have inspired me to sew and drape again.

Fantastic video.
Hi Nick I just found out your video!!! I like it, my question is:
How do you sew the dress?
Thank you so much and stay safe.
Very good draping video thank u ! I have a question at the end though, how do you remove the tight dress securely from the stand without ruining all the pining ? And if it was a longer skirt would you just continue pining until the end of the skirt ? Thanks !!
Ok, I'm JUST seeing you on here.. OMG!! LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU since PRW!!! SO glad to see you on here!! JUST SUBSCRIBED!!! 😍😘🤗🤗
I love your videos. They're so helpful.
Your's passions is your's achievement woow you're amazing 👌👌👌
I’m having a really hard time figuring out how to get it off the dress form and then sew it together
this is not what you sew together. this was the drape for the pattern pieces for the real dress. you take these pieces and transfer the shapes and markings to the wrong side of the real fabric and THEN sew those new pieces together. otherwise you'd have a dress with a big grain line down the center front and sharpie marker in the seam.
But if you're really determined, french seams would probably be the most realistic option
You are genious.. I m also designer from Bangladesh and I follow you ❤️
Hi..... nick you are awesome the way you teach....☺️
