Thanks again for an excellent video, you always explain the theory and mechanics so well, my Evinrude 30HP long shaft runs sweet after reading and watching your videos, thanks again sir, john.
H James, Murph from the Jersey shore here. Good work on you OMC vids. as an owner of the same generation OMC, ( I have a 93 Johnson ELS 30) I have found no vids NOT ONE of the thermostat replacement. I have the manual and see the cylinder head needs removal, but for an older generation of OMC, I cant believe no one has tackeld the project. I believe you would get MASSIVE viewership as there are a hell of a lot of people who would like to tackle the project. Thanks a lot for your vids Jim.
no ive done a 25hp one from 89'. same powerhead. you just have to remove the cylinder head COVER not the whole head. I would recommend pulling the head anyway for cleaning and removing carbon on piston tops and inside the head(remember to use a NON ABRASIVE material and no harsh automotive carb cleaner). what temp is it running at idle?
As long as nobody ever fiddled with the factory stop Timing adjustment it never has to be checked really. Its set at the factory and once its set its set.I have worked on many motors of that size, year group Evinrude and Johnsons never ever touched the full throttle timing stop. Again unless somebody took the factory screw stop off and messed it up the timing is fine.If your not getting full power it could be other issues,Synchronation adjustments of linkage,carburetion,ignition,etc..Just my advice from years of experience on outboard repair.Glenn in New York
thanks for video. was not sure where timing pointer was located. however icant really safely run a timing light while moving in a boat at wot. let alone try to see it whilst hanging from the stern at 30mph. so im not going to monkey w mine. guess really test prop is almost necessary
Hello, I have a problem with evinrude 55hp2t, I swam 4 weekends in a row, everything was ok and suddenly I want to start the engine and it shoots sneezes pride in the exhaust I checked the ignition wedge on the wheel and the carburetor and everything is ok and it still does not start and shoots in the exhaust and goes out
I JUST GOT A 1976 EVINRUDE 9.5 .ITS BEEN STORED FOR 8 OR SO YEARS ,,its got tons of compression ,looks like its never been apart ,,so i expect coils ,,i am a newbee novice ,,i want to remove the flywheel on this motor ,,what size socket ,or a metric socket is what i need to remove the nut ,,secondly ,the recess in the flywheel ,wont let a socket go in to the nut ....thanks for your knowledge
Thanks for watching commenting. I wear that watch every day and have for years. My wife bought me the watch when I pass my scuba diving certification test.
Is there a nut or screw on how to adjust the timing to turn the timing lower or higher. I can't find anything to on that same engine to adjust the timing. Please help thank you
The screw that you looking for is the Full Throttle Stop just to the left of the timing mark. There is a screw with a lock nut. If you watched the full video you see that did not go well for me. Be careful !!
Having trouble with 9.9. 2 stroke Evinrude OMC . Pissing gas everywhere the fast idle lever is all messed up. If there was the smallest of gaps in one of the spark plugs . very small could this be the reason for all my problems . About to throw the thing in the lake and buy a new and bigger motor . Any input would awesome even if you think you know whats wrong or not put the idea out there
When you say gas everywhere if you are talking about gas in the water it is running to rich or only on one cylinder, if it is blowing back through the carb it would be the reed valves. Does it run any different with one plug wire off. When was the last time carb was cleaned.
I had one like that once, I was in Canada fishing for Northern Pike and the engine start leaving a gas oil trail in the water. It turned out to be running on one cylinder.
Om Fishing I think I was running on one cylinder because I had to put the fast idle lever down enough just enough to get the boat into gear . The one positive is I always get a good jet stream coming out of the motor of water. If running on one cylinder would that be a reason for gas leaks
On that model no timing adjustments are necessary. Correct wire positioning in the three and four wire connectors is all that is required to maintain proper ignition timing.
The service manual says to run the engine with a test wheel. Do not run the engine with a propeller or a flushing adapter for adjustment. I don't have a test prop so I was going to do mine at the lake. That was not a good idea and you know why if you watched the next video you see why.
Well, thinking of doing something similar to set my high speed timing. But, hope to just be able to run it up against a bank and have it stay put. . . Son-in-law and his buddies have played with every thing and it is completely out of time and sync. . .
I have a 1988 120hp evinrude. Can you tell me what is the purpose of the spark advance link assembly? It has a rod that is attached to the wot advance side of the timing base. And also how is it adjusted for idle advance?
Hi ,I have a 1996 ) evinrude 50 I want to change the thermostat but how do I get the large nut undone I don't want to damage it 2 cyl 1996 two stroke evinrude
One of our youtube friends told me about this on my channel. I am not sure about the 35 he said that is what the factory bulletin said. I will say that it made a big difference in the way my motor runs. Better then ever.
Hello OM. I having problem with my Evinrude 30 hp. When is cool start normarlly, but after that, don't Start again, also, when i put on low gear. Shut off. Pls help
The very first thing I would check would make sure I am using recreational gas. That would be the number one cause of not starting when hot. I don't know about where you live but in my area you can not always trust the gas stations. There are videos on how to test your gas. Check out my video {Evinrude Service bulletin} This is setting the leakage on your out board. Sometimes changing the timing a little makes all the difference. There are a lot of things that it could be but this is my first two choices. Let me know how it goes for you.
Your right their would have been a lot of better ways to check the timing. That was one of those times that you look back and say what was I thinking, I guess I wasn't. WOT and not watch where you are going.
Hello from Australia I have the same motor it's been sitting for 4 years we have cleaned fuel lines fresh plugs it will not run or even splutter just a single backfire every 10 or so pulls any help would be awesome
When a engine backfires like that it is usually a lean condition or out of time. I think yours is lean fuel. Check you carburetor and make sure it is clean as well.
Check the magnets under the flywheel, one or both may have moved from their proper position. Happened to me after my 25 sat on the bottom for a week (long story). That was 4 years ago and she is still running strong.
What I was trying to do was bring the engine up to full throttle in forward. {With out using a test prop in a test tank.} At full throttle the engine timing mark must align with appropriate mark on the flywheel grid. I was try to see if this setting was correct. Don't do what I did in the next video. There are easer ways to check this.
@@mprice8851 The adjustment screw on my rope start model is a stopper screw. When at full throttle the leakage is against the stopper and the timing should be at 30 degrees BTDC. If it is not you adjust the screw one turn clockwise retards timing about 1 degree or one turn counterclockwise advances timing 1 degree. This was what I was trying to check. I want to know if the timing was correct at WOT. Thank you for watching and commenting.
That was one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time. No one was hurt in the making of this video. LOL just my pride. That is one of those you say I won't do that any more.
I like to set full throttle timing by removing spark plugs, ground the wires, put the throttle to full, crank the motor over with a remote starter button and check timing.
Could you not have just kept it on the trailer at the ramp? I've gone at wot to get the boat on the trailer and its hard to even get it to move up. I'd think you would be fine,
Your right their would have been a lot of better ways to check the timing. That was one of those times that you look back and say what was I thinking, I guess I wasn't. WOT and not watch where you are going.
A method that supposedly works is to check timing while cranking the engine with the plate at full advance. No need to run the engine. The timing will be 4 degrees retarded from the actual full rpm timing because the cdi will advance 4 degrees at high rpm . So, just add 4 degrees to the number you get on the timing light. I realize this is hard/impossible to do by yourself with a rope start only motor. A helper will be needed.
i dont fucking understand anything he is doing, so i have to set flywheel everytime i wanna start that ? i mean no bolts to lose or tighten. im so confused
Yeah, pull plugs, crank check idle timing, advance fast idle lever to full or disconnect throttle cable and hold full open manually and crank to check wot timing. 100% NO reason to do it on the water. Good grief.

You don't set timing this way. As someone earlier said, pull the plugs and crank it. Lord.
