I remember driving through upstate NY and saw a sign on the side of the highway advertising something like "Uncle Skip's Animal Farm" (name intentionally changed).
We never stopped there, and for all I know it was a wonderful place.
But in my mind's eye I pictured "Uncle Skip's" as a tumbledown house with an unpaved driveway leading to a pscked dirt "farm" that consisted of:
- a three-legged dog,
- a hairless chimp,
- a galvanized tub of ducklings,
- a 25-year-old antisocial cat,
- a bear in a too-small cage, and
- a roadkill of indeterminate species.

In 1992, I went to Prairie Dog Town in Colorado. It had prairie dogs, rattlesnakes, a five legged cow, a six legged cow, and a hyena. I had been to the Bronx Zoo and the National Zoo (in Washington D.C.) and never saw a hyena. I got a good look at the hyena because its cage was a 40 foot diameter concrete circle with bars around it. The hyena had a wooden doghouse for privacy, but was pacing back and forth in the cage when I visited.
