- Painting the digital camouflage on the ZBD-89 is taking longer than expected, so this month we return to our Panzer III and we will give him a little base to live on. A base really improves the presentation of the model, and it's very easy to do!

Cobblestone road
Cityscape. Defense of Berlin, Stalingrad, or Sevastopol. Something to that effect.

It was much easier than I expected.
Day 1. Apply the Sculptamold
Day 2. Sand and paint, dry for 45 mins and apply the glue and dirt
Day 3. Airbrush the dried base, apply the grass, paint the cactus.

Great work. It's nice to see some "old school" tips still in use aka the matt medium. Another is MOD PODGE matt glue/sealer.
Great tip! I find that the matte medium dries very strong so I trust it more than white glue etc.

I seem to remember that it was pointed out years ago in Military Modelling magazine that the cactus was actually from a totally different continent and was just artistic licence. As always, great work as usual.
This type of cactus is visible in photos taken in Tunisia featuring this unit I am modelling. It's a sort of euphorbia, which is technically not really a cactus, but through parallel evolution it looks the same.

Yes I know, dirt specially screened out by Michael/Hamilkar Barkas. I also use my sifted garden soil in my dioramas. Also German dirt. Has proven itself.

Oh I still do model railroad. I just haven't done scenery on a railroad in a decade.

Very nice. A simple, but effective base. Funny, because I am doing the TNCA Salinas Tank. Mexico's first and only tank. So, the desert look you have done comes in handy. Thanks.

I recentely made a base for my DAK Panzer III,but I should have wanted for this to come out,to copy it onto my shelf ;) Regarding what base,you should maybe do something with resin,like an abandoned tank (Panzer of the lake type thing),or a tank camouflaged so much you cannot even see it. I mean,the decision is up to you.Hope for more of this!
That’s a neat little base. Goes to show that’s little more effort than sticking a tank on that proverbial plank goes a long way to showcase the model better.
Absolutely! I had this guy on a temporary plank to transport it to a show. But it now looks a million times better on a real base.
Thaks for the guide, very impressive! Nice lifehack with the soap, didn't know about it. Don't you think that applying wash effect after highliting (e.g. cactus) eliminate the drybrush highlight? I do it vice versa: dark wash, highlight.
I wash is only applied to the shadows/edges of details it runs off (or I wipe it off) the raised details that were drybrushed.

The thing that bothers me is the dust collection over time, as this little gem sits on my shelf. And the damage for curious, clueless fingers. Do you have a good source of perspex display cases of different sizes & shapes? Cheers
I display them in an IKEA detolf cabinet which is a mostly sealed glass cabinet. It keeps off most of the dust!
And plaster of Paris should work, though it may not hold a shape as nicely as the Sculptamold while still wet.

I used the MiG Productions thinner. Any enamel thinner will do.

I've done that in the past... I'd mix XF-68 NATO Brown with XF-7 Flat Red. Start with 75% '68 and 25% '7. You might need to adjust from there. XF-9 Hull Red is too dark on its own but you can try lightening that too

I have been looking for those round painting panels in Ottaw but so far have struck out. Michaels - nope, Deserres - nope. Amazon - nope. Haven't tried Wallacks. Lots of square and rectangular but no round ones. Where do you get yours?

I got these at Deserres in Bells Corners. Up the steps into the rear half of the store, directly on the left after the steps. The round ones are 20-30 bucks while the squares are less than 10. I got them on a slight sale so it wasn't terrible. Ideally I'd mill them myself for pennies ..
@@Panzermeister36 acckkk! yes indeed, there they are. I wasn't looking in the right place. Indeed, pricey but noted as an alternative, always nice to have choices. I did find some round discs at Dollarama but a bit thin that you could glue several together to build up some thickness, another option.

Yep. I have some photos of them in Tunisia, including the one I showed in the video.
What color were fire extinguishers on German armor?
Usually dark yellow or grey. A similar but slightly different colour than the base camouflage colour of the vehicle. They were not red when mounted externally.
Hate to tell you this but those cactus plants are only found in North America, so unless you are modelling the German invasion of Arizona they are incorrect. Everything else is spot on.
These cacti are clearly visible in numerous photos in Tunisia, taken with vehicles from the 501 sPzAbt which is what I am modelling. The photo of the cacti I included near the end is an Italian gun crew in North Africa for example.
@@Panzermeister36 Prickly pears (mostly O. stricta) were originally imported into Europe during the 16th century. They are now found in the Mediterranean region of Northern Africa, especially in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, where they grow all over the countryside (WikiP)- so PM is correct
Apologies, looks like you are right, especially if modelling Tunisia. I’ve always associated the Cacti with Arizona and the dried bushes with the Sahara, and the drier areas of Eastern Libya where the cacti are less common with the desert war.
I’ve been watching for a long time, why don’t you do modulation? Everything is fine, but at the end your models look monotonous and flat..Like toys..
This is a mystery to me.
Personally I find modulation is not the realistic style I aim for in my models. I can appreciate it on others' models but I am usually trying to match a historical photograph.
